It doesn't matter. But then again, voting in some random moe tournament doesn't matter either. I just do it for fun. I don't put much thought behind it. I only have maybe 3 ultimate favourite girls in this thing, and none of them have made the necklace rounds. So I shouldn't vote in necklace rounds then? I don't see how that's helping ISML grow.

A lot of us are still neutrals. Not our fault the girls we like aren't up there. So we make due. Plus I still like some of the rest anyway, like Eucliwood and Azusa. So while I might have voted for Azusa usually, since there was a split vote, I went with Eu. It's not that big a change for me. The whole point of the necklace round is to test how the voters will vote when there's an imbalance in stat. The results would be very different if all characters were on equal footing. It's better the first way though, since it's supposed to cover performance over the whole period. Just getting into the spirit of things really.

That makes sense, but... success for what? I could understand if the people behind the character design and animation felt something special about their character winning, but for the voters? It just seems to me that some people get into the idea that they want their vote to go toward a winning candidate. If you vote for someone who probably has no chance of winning, you've "thrown your vote away." I can understand the reasoning behind that in American politics, but here? Is that really what it is?

That's partly what I'm getting at. It doesn't really matter, so you vote for who you like the best. It doesn't matter if your absolute favorite characters of all time aren't featured, because this isn't a write-in contest. You choose from the options presented. If you don't know or care about any of the characters featured, you abstain. (At least, I presume that's why there's the ability to abstain from certain brackets.)

Again, I'm questioning why one would vote based on perception of who has the best chance of winning. If enough people do that, then "character strength" (popularity) won't actually mean anything - it'll just be people second-guessing and trying to predict what everyone else would like. That's no fun.

For me, necklace round I vote for who I like best of the ones who have a realistic chance, not about voting for the one mostly like to win, for example Haruhi, Yuri, and Shana had a relatively low chance to win this necklace compared to Azusa, so I choice to support Azusa over Shana.

If it had been swapped and Azusa had the lower chance, and Shana had a decent chance, I would have voted for her instead. If they had both been at a point where they had a chance would have been a bit tougher to decide since I like both of them a lot.

Ledgem, you're still thinking this is a pure moe tournament where there is no politics. But if you're been to any saimoe arena, it's exactly that - saimoe is politics. Japan Saimoe has way more factions and other strategic voting, but it's still the same idea. Saimoe will never be a 100% accurate representation of moe every round. It's a game of thrones.

When you consider brackets, it's much nastier. For example, take last year's semifinals, Kanade vs. Shana, Mikoto vs. Kuroneko. Many Mikoto fans will be thinking to vote for Shana (the statistically weaker character) just so Mikoto will face Shana instead of Kanade whether they like Shana more than Kanade or not. Is it fair? Maybe, maybe not. But it's all strategy. You may not like it, but that's really how it is, and what can we do about it? Nothing. Actually, the reason some people do not find ISML "fun" is because there's less politics than in Japan Saimoe. They do not want an accurate representation of character strength, but rather a game between the voters and the factions they're a part of.

What ISML does is provide you a voting form - we do not tell you how to vote. People use abstain because they don't know both characters, they don't know one character, or they like both characters equally. We don't explain in what situations should you abstain. So when people vote a certain way, it's their choice. Your idea of "voting for the character you like best" is really just that, your own interpretation of the ISML voting form. It's not by any means a bad thing.

Interesting. I already voted there but see no harm listing my choices here too:

Spoiler for Male Noms:

(Side note: I'm not stating this as criticism; just wondering to the forum.)
Truth be told, a part of it is "Anti-Voting".

Suppose of the seven girls in the Necklace Round, you really like 2, you kinda like 4, and you really dislike 1 and/or feel "meh" towards her. Unfortunately, one of the 2/3 girls most likely to win is the girl you really dislike and/or feel "meh" towards (personally, I've been in this situation, or one close to it, a fair number of times). Neither of the 2 girls you really like have a realistic chance of winning due to SDO (or whatever it's called these days). So since you have a strong preference amongst the 2/3 strongest girls, you make a vote just out of them.

It's an "Anybody but XXXX" vote as much as anything.

If I don't have a strong preference amongst the 2/3 strongest girls, I'll just vote my heart, even if that aligns me with the weakest girl of the 7.

Ah, so people have turned it into a social sort of game. That makes sense, although I must admit that I'm a bit disappointed to learn of it. Thanks for the explanation.

I'll confess to holding some of the same expectations/assumptions/concerns you've expressed since the start of ISML, but KholdStare's explanation above is crystal clear and the best I've come across yet. Thanks KS

So (basically) there are two types of voters; those who play the political game and those who play the moe game. Since I don't care for politicking and strategizing (at least with undependable data), I just ignore that part of it and enjoy the challenge of the Vote: boosting the girls I admire, and which of the other cuties is simply the more moe?

This season I loosened my voting constraints and give votes out a tiny bit more generously to deserving girls I was ignorant of in the past, which is fun. So I still enjoy every round, and even if you just like voting moe, I think you might too, once you get past the disappointing realities

The only drag is that you can't feel that she lost honestly, since politics is rarely honest. But that's the world we live in, so I guess the best way to change saimoe voters is to change the World first. Yeah. That'll be easier

Well, seeing the statistics that show who is still in the running... and who is not hurts pretty bad this year.

Come on give me a surprise this winter... oh that Imagin would get a certain license back.
That's what I want for Christmas!
