Well...in the last 48 hours, the Miami Heat sign Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. Like....yikes! Seriously, that team has to win a championship in the next year or two, along with a few more. How on earth Pat Riley pulled all this off....nice going. Cleveland has some right to feel burned, but honestly, they wasted their salary cap plans for years and never got Lebron a second player of his caliber. They had their chance - if they're doomed to not be able to bild around him, he can go to a team that can. Maybe a James vs Bryant final might actually happen after all. Early days, but wow, this is just tantalising.

Right before ending the suspense, Lebron "King" James did say he wanted to win right now and not wait. He figured Cleveland couldn't get it done. Same with New York. So he choose Miami. I'm guessing with Pat Riley's experience, he knew what he was doing.

Let's be honest, there are like 6 players in the league that are on Lebron/kobe level. Kobe, Lebron, Pierce (08), Deron Williams, Dwight Howard, Wade. But this year for shaqtus, and not trading mo williams probably was the straw that broke the camels back.

Oh wow, if the Heat DON'T win the finals they will be a disappointment. They have a tall order to live up to with that lineup. I was hoping Lebron would go to the West and give Kobe some trouble, but instead the Heat are going to be a major obstacle for my C's...

Miami will now have to work out who they're going to fill the rest of their roster with and how they will staty under the salary cap. They cut their list to just 2 players to get those three. They'll need a point guard and a centre and bare-bone cost players to fill the bench. Depending on how much of a pay cut the trio takes, you'd see about $6-10 million free to fill the remaining spots. However they may cut or re-sign Michael Beasley ay a lower price to free up more space in the salary cap. At least the process is more transparent than other places. In Australia, the Melbourne Storm (rugby side) won 2 premierships by way overblowing the salary cap and got busted this year, which got them stripped of their premierships and barred from scoring points in the league for 2010. If Miami are smart with their remaining money, which I feel fairly certain Pat Riley will be, they will be a powerhouse.

Just wondering - who lost the most out of this? Cleveland lost Lebron - so probably them. Clippers, Nets and Knicks got nothing. Chicago at least got hold of Boozer so they didn't have nothing to show for taking a gamble. Honestly I think Orlando could be the other big loser - van Gundy blew it big time in 09 with those losses in Game 2 and Game 4 versus the Lakers, then he traded away Turgolu for Carter? That didn't help them much and they still got humbled big time by Boston. Orlando's window of opportunity has probably been slammed shut by Miami's play. Lakers will feel fortunate they're in the other conference but Bryant and Jackson will both be sweating somewhat - Kobe being able to match Michael Jordan's six championship rings is going to be a lot harder now. As for the Celtics and Doc Rivers, they now have a major obstacle in their conference. They are damn good at turning a game into a defensive grind and they have a kind of Fab 4. But they've been versing teams with two superstars tops - facing a team with three is going to be harsh.

I heard another thing that moved Lebron away from Cleveland was that Bosh outright told James privately that he would not go to Cleveland under any circumstance. Wade was only ever going to go to Miami or Chicago. Seems an easy decision. What's interesting is that Toronto fans were actually very supportive of Bosh's move overall and didn't blame him for leaving since the Raptors failed at managing their salary cap and salaries. Lebron is probably going to end up being the more villain-like one of the three - Cleveland only mattered because of James. Without him, will anyone even bother watching them now? They're already calling this 'The Defection.' The Cavaliers could end up folding cobnsidering their inflated contrated leave them bugger all to play with to get anyone and Dan Gilbert's investment looks set to crash. James gave them 7 years - that's long enough. In the end, it's his life. Cleveland will probably never forgive him. But n the end, the Cavaliers as an organisation didn't go for the right people and badly mismanaged their salary cap. And now it's blown up in their faces.

It will be interesting to see what legacy the trio will make in the years to come. It will also be interesting to see whether this trio will make Pat Riley step into the coaching job once more like he did in 2006.

Btw, one question. Can anyone explain what Red Right 88, The Drive, The Catch, Renteria's Single, The Fumble, The Move and The Shot are referring to? I take it's that's other big stars leaving various sport teams in Cleveland in years gone by?

Well the Lakers now have a real point guard and I hope they resign Fisher. Honestly it's either Boston, the Heat or the Magic against the Lakes for next years Final. If it's the Celtics, it'll be hard on the Lakers since the Celtics have traded up from Sheed to Jermaine O'neal, the Magic will be easy unless Dwight gets some fire in his belly, Wade and gang will probably also be a hard series, but in the end when the bench can't win a game the only team from the Eastern Conference that can challenge the Lakers would be the Celtics. On the West, with the Coach mia in Denver the Nuggets are out, Stoudemaire is gone from Phoenix and although Nash made Stoudemaire good with out the big no defender they are going to suck, Tim Duncan is too old so the Spurs are not a real threat, Boozer left Utah so Deron Williams won't be able to carry the team by himself. The only Franchise that can really challenge the Lakers for supremacy will be the Thunder hence my supreme confidence that the Lakers will be back to the Finals. Though I wish Odom would be more of a real star and stop sucking most of the time. Most of those series didn't have to go to 6 or 7 if Odom would just show up in the first 3-4 games of those series.

It's all various events that demonstrated the futility of Cleveland sports. It ranges from losing the original Cleveland Browns to another city, to John Elway making a game-winning 4th quarter drive, to Michael Jordan burying a clutch shot, etc.

Discovery Helps Researchers Close In on HIV Vaccine

(July 8) -- American scientists are touting a major stride toward a vaccine that can ward off HIV, after finding two key proteins that neutralize 91 percent of the virus' 190 strains.

The team of researchers with the National Institutes of Health's Vaccine Research Center hopes the antibody discovery can spur successful work toward a method of preventing HIV, which already afflicts an estimated 33 million people worldwide.

The discovery, published in this week's Science, is courtesy of Donor 45, an unidentified African-American man whose body produced the antibodies, called VRC01 and VRC02.

Scientists have already identified the 12 cells in his body that produced the proteins. If they can harness the mechanisms by which the antibodies were made, they might be able to create a vaccine that would spur anybody's body to make the HIV destroyers.

"We're going to be at this for a while," Gary Nabel, director of the center and a leader on this research, told The Wall Street Journal.

The last few years has seen a flurry of effort -- much of it futile -- toward creating a vaccine for HIV, much like those that helped eradicate small pox and polio. Until now, however, single antibodies only appeared to block one or two HIV strains.

Trials on the first promising vaccine, AIDSVAX, were largely a disappointment. In American and Thai trials, the vaccine yielded success rates that varied from statistically insignificant to 30 percent.

In this case, researchers seem to have found a sweet spot on the surface of the human immunodeficiency virus.

"The antibodies attach to a virtually unchanging part of the virus, and this explains why they can neutralize such an extraordinary range of HIV strains," Dr. John Mascola, one of the study's researchers, said in a statement.

Turning these newly discovered antibodies into a useful HIV vaccine remains a tall order. Scientists would need to isolate the specific part of the virus that the antibodies latch onto, then craft a vaccine using that viral snippet to train the body to produce VRC01 and VRC02.

"It's an important step in the right direction of adding a degree of precision to vaccine development," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told ABC News. "But there's no way to tell when a vaccine could happen."

Now that scientists have a better understanding of the actual virus, and areas on its surface that appear vulnerable, new tactics in treating HIV/AIDS might also be an area for further research.

"In infected people, we may be looking at it in combination with medication and determine whether you can get more effective control of the virus and suppress it down to low levels," Nabel said. "The hope would be that we could suppress the virus and increase life span and improve quality of life."

Well I wasn't talking about it as if you could just take some magic pill. We get vaccines for polio, hepatitis, etc.

If it helps prevent the spreading of the disease, that is good. Lord knows Africa could REALLY use it. It's better to prevent infection by practicing safe sex, though.

Ah, but now you need to look at the culture to see why safe sex isn't practiced (to a large degree --> male ego dysfunctionality and patriarchal views of women, something many cultures suffer from to some degree)

Even if there is a cure, how are the poor people going to afford it? A hospice or euthanasia treatment will still be cheaper.
