Comic Yuri Hime, the biggest yuri magazine in Japan, once ran a poll early in its existence that showed that its readership was 70% women. I'm not sure how it is now, the popularity of Yuru Yuri with otaku men may have brought the ratio down somewhat, or maybe the female audience grew even larger, but that's still a a point to remember. Women love each other too in real life and in *their* fantasies. To be sure, most of the yuri in anime is ship tease and doesn't get anywhere, being that many of them are selling to a sensitive male audience. It's annoying and frustrating, another one of those "what I hate in anime" things, and it gives the excuse for many of the same sensitive male audience to find faults "inherent" in yuri. Exceptions with more complete stories are generally drawn from adaptations of existing yuri manga, with some, well, exceptions of exceptions. Which brings up another problem, being such a recent field in comparison to the familiar and established genres with many classics to their name [obviously, girls in love isn't new, and literary inheritance can be traced quite far, but the blooming of yuri is comparatively recent], there isn't much to adapt from, yet. The genre and the pool of authors and artists within the field need to mature some more still. |

And believe it or not, some of us ladies prefer yuri to yaoi. I like looking at pretty men myself, but I always found yuri to be better written than yaoi.

Because, sadly, the "yuri" term is too broad, too vague... Unless you purposely narrow its field of application down to its original core meaning only: Quote:
In short, stuff like the pic I posted above. Which was 99.9% made with a male-audience in mind. (That's not to say women can't enjoy it, but...) Well... Porn isn't just for men either, is it? I mean, there's plenty of women who watch/enjoy regular porn too. Does that fact alone make 'porn' as a whole a woman's thing? Don't think so. Last edited by Dahak86; 2013-03-18 at 22:08. |

Lesbianism in anime is very far from lesbianism IRL. That's a fact. I have already said that. Would it be weird to think that most of yuri fans are girls....? Anyway, I don't think that females watch yuri the way as men watches them... Too bad that they made them all cute, sexy and hot that in sometimes cover the real intention of the anime ( other than fanservice ) to show homosexual relationship as it exist IRL. Yuri anime failed to show that. |

^Women have fantasies too.
And not all women, not even all Japanese women who read manga (that would be a...considerably large number, to put it lightly), are all about two pretty boys going at it. Yuri in anime, sure, you probably have a point, but the yuri genre in Japan as a whole isn't a boys' club. The term is only in use in the West, and declining. Japanese don't distinguish sexually explicit yuri from other yuri. |

As if I didn't know that already... Though I wouldn't be so sure of it declining. (at least not here where I live)
Point is, though, there's a reason if such a term came to be; and I don't think it was just so as to have a "brand-new-jargon-word" to slap into urban dictionary. Quote:

But there are exceptions like One Piece, which I do not mind being an endless WSJ-manga/ anime adaption (though this is just my personal opinion, which others may disagree with). However there is a similar thing that is just as bad as this "dragging on": An anime adaption that fails to sell the source material's strong points or makes the franchise look very bad. I mean, I think some of you know what happened to "umineko no naku koro ni". It completly failed in comparison to its predecessor higurashi when it comes to the adaption. *fat: For those who don't know, I am talking about 2 different series from the same author that both contain "no naku koro ni" in their title.

One Piece and Naruto are actually still popular though. Bleach was suffering from a decline of popularity anyway when the anime ended last year(wow...it's been a year already?).
Also, I know Naruto goes thru filler arcs like crazy(which was one of Bleach's major problems) but I've heard that OP pretty much very rarely goes into filler mode.

One thing I hate about anime are the side tracks and side stories an anime goes. We have past scenes, memories etc without particular important to the present plot. A lot of long running anime has this.... Instead of going linear... we have side tracts, eating an episode or more at most. |

Back to filler, Naruto for instance actually had decent filler. Bleach was the big contender for having terrible filler. A big turning point for Bleach was the filler aired in the middle of the Hueco Mundo arc, which I have no doubt murdered some of the viewers (myself included, and I've given up on the series despite it being finished).

Looks like we have found one rare example of man who doesn't like yuri (in its sexual connotation) here.
Anyone else who shares his tastes? Because, as of now, the rule of thumb I proposed earlier still appears to be valid. |
