I don't know what to make of this. It's not like I had an emotional connection to any characters, but the highlight of this series, to me, was always the mind games between L and Light. With L being dead, that eliminates that altogether, just when I had been thinking that aspect of the show might return...
I pretty much agree. My favorite parts of the anime were the cat and mouse between L and Light, and just watching L generally. Without him there, I can't imagine it'll be nearly as interesting.

TBH it was a good episode but it's implications for the rest of the series are bad. 11 episodes without L? Come on.
L was the character that really made the show. At first Death Note was "Intriguing" but it wasn't "amazing" until we had L.
Sucks he had to die. I guess that's what happened in the manga, so it has to happen in the anime. I think when they make animes of stuff though, they should revise things like this. I don't think L dying this early on is integral to Death Note being Death Note. It would be much better if it didn't happen until towards the end if it had to at all.
In the foot scene, you can see when L presses his towel against Lights foot there is some hesitation (and possibly a painful reaction) from Light. What I gathered from this the first time I watched it was that L pricked Light to get a sample of blood to match to the piece of the death note that Light wrote Higusidfd(can't remember the spelling)'s name on. Upon a deeper and more practical look, Light may be simply a little anxious of the situation, but that was just my first impression and consider it a possibility.
Regarding the future plans, as a non-manga reader, I am fairly certain Rem and L have worked out some sort of a plan to get Light. I believe Rem contacted L because Rem is now completely against Light after realizing his plan and toying with Misa's life in the process. It is also obvious that L ABSOLUTELY, 100% KNEW LIGHT WAS KIRA from this episode on (Making Rem contacting L alot more plausible). I think it will be along the lines of a note left by L that another investigator will find saying something like "If I am dead then we know Light is kira".
I have seen people getting flamed about the possibility of L faking his death. While this is highly unlikely, it still holds a small possibility to me, as we can't see exactly whose name is being written down in the death note. Although we can see a switch in scenes to Rem writing a name down after Watari's death, most assume that it is not a brief flashback moments ago, but it perhaps might have been. Rem could have written just Watari's name down, and died from that. This is all a very small possibility in my eyes of course.

In the How to Read volume of Death note, it states the 66 rules on how using the Death Note.
One of them says that the shinigami eyes reveal the name that can be used to kill that person, even if that person was never given a name or have it registed.
So it makes me wonder how do people originally get their name? Does God give them? Is it different from the ones given by our parents?
Even though it happened.. I cannot believe it happened. While his eye's were closing, I was expecting them to pop open or something but!!! I am rather sad.. I knew at one point it would happen. I knew that some way or another, one of them would.. but... !!!

Why did they have to kill the old man.. what he ever do! He was so nice.. and sniper at that.
I really like how they handled this episode for the most part. I was a manga reader and really looked foward to seeing it, but there were a few scenes that seemed out of place to me.
On the postive side, I get that they were trying to throw in some foreshadowing and they did a really good job of showing how L knew he was defeted. Especially in that "gay" scene they added with Light and L.
Spoiler for not really a spoiler but a long biblical reference:
The scene of L drying Light's feet after coming in from the rain had some really good imagery in it. Besides the obvious image of L bowing before Light as an admission of defeat, there is a more subtle biblical reference to the Gospel of John 13:1-5.
Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
Now it may seem like a bit of a stretch to equivicate a foot massage with washing his feet, but I think that was still the intended image. And its a good choice of weeks to air the show if we're to make L out to be a Christ figure
I also enjoyed the foreshadowing flashbacks to L's childhood. Given the deathly silence in the air (notice there was little background music), the loud, jarring church bell sound that only L could hear showed that he knew his time was coming. There's more foreshadowing in those scenes but mentioning them goes into manga spoiler territory. Never the less I really appreciated them.
And the way L died was perfect. There was no surprise in his eyes like Ray Penbar, or sadness like Penbar's fiance. He knew he was right all along, and he knew exactly how it was going to end.
One of my few complaints is the scene with Misa walking through Tokyo and singing. It just seemed completely out of place. I did however like the way she dressed and how the blank look on her face gave her the appearance of a doll. I guess thats just another good image, considering how she was used as a tool to indirectly kill L and Watari. Plus with Rem out of the way she's completely given herself up and is now a puppet for Light to control.
Anyways, all in all a real good episode. One of my favorites yet. But its also kind of a sad note for me cause IMO this is the point in the manga where it starts to go downhill.
Edit: Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the biblical reference.
