It's rather common that people with altered mental states can take a bullet or many before their body shuts down itself since the brain doesn't experience the shock the way that normal psychology do.

Thus why people on PCP, opium, and morphine among other drugs make for very dangerous opponents. I believe that more than one military or paramilitary force has taken advantage of that altered state produced by such drugs.
