Well, Odette II was a battleship - or at least a fleet flagship - but I'd be reluctant to class Bentenmaru as a battleship - the word commonly translated as battleship, senkan, more correctly refers to the term "warship". All battleship-class ships (BB) are senkan, but not all senkan are BBs, as the term can also cover frigates (FF), destroyers (DD), light cruisers (CL), heavy cruisers (CA), etc...

That said, the distinction between battleship and heavy cruiser was primarily armor, not guns: the Germans made a class of pocket battleships (CAs with BB guns) and the Americans had the Alaska-class cruiser, which was commonly called a battlecruiser and was often described as an overgrown heavy cruiser or small battleship... I'd think Bentenmaru, given that she appears to be smaller than Odette II, is probably in the DD to CA range in terms of tonnage, but with BB guns. That said, this is primarily guesswork as to the guns, until we have a proper yardstick.

As for the class, however, generally FFs to CAs would engage in commerce raiding, since anything bigger wouldn't be fast enough to chase down fleeing merchies. In fact, given that convoy escorts would most likely be DDs, on account of the tin can being the workhorse of the navy, you're looking at needing CLs or CAs, really, since they can kill whatever they can't outrun and outrun whatever they can't kill.

Ontopic: I like that Marika's pal gives Chiaki the lowdown and a few more facts about that girl's personality. Now that she's a working student juggling three areas of responsibility (school, maid cafe and privateering), someone should toss a bottle of Kamogawa energy glug to Marika.

Anyone who is a fic writer should play up a comedy crossover with either Jack Sparrow or Mal Reynolds crossing paths with Marika. Would like to read that.

I'd heard from Pyrite/Fool's Gold a few months ago that DS closed down and LD tried (and failed) to resurrect it... ah, well. No point in revisiting that place. Unfortunately, I have now become the mask from all that incest yay shipping that I did to troll Blue Taboo and Kate.

What I really liked is that for once, we have a genius honor roll student who is only as such due to studying like mad, because she wants to - most other series we have genius honor roll students to whom good grades come naturally. Marika may be the Ace of her story, but she still had to work really hard to get there - because she wanted to be on par with her mother, who she adores.

(Also, thank god we've got another healthy parent-child relationship. Damned few of those in TV that I can see. Probably count on one hand how many shows have positive, healthy relationships... Blue Bloods, Castle... Burn Notice? Yeah, I'm drawing a blank.)

If Marika needs Kamogawa energy drink, why not have Lan or Madoka give it to her? I wouldn't be surprised if fanart like that appeared on Pixiv too.

Jack and Marika would be utterly hilarious to read. If somehow you got the Flying Dutchman into shape, you could also have a Will and Marika crossover there. I mean I could imagine that some fangirl would try to have a character played by Orlando Bloom in a crossover fic IN SPACE.

No, those were different things. It was firing missles, then the fighters appeared afterwards, but they weren't intended to seem to be the same objects. They were just yet more reinforcements for the enemy that Marika's mind was conjuring up to show just how screwed she was.

I really hate having to wait a week to see what happens next in this series. It's driving me nuts.
