Romance anime with a secret?
When I say secret, it can be either two things:
- Cheating (something to do with the relationship that will/is formed) - A dark secret of the past or current secret. I can't explain well, but one example would be D.N. Angel (didn't finish it yet, so please don't spoil). There is a secret about him being Dark. I prefer it to be a bit more serious though. Or it can be about something the guy/girl did which is kept a secret from each other. I prefer it to have drama, a decent amount so it can be considered a drama at least. And if possible, can the romance have good development? I some reason enjoy manga where the development before the relationship is improved and even after the relationship it keeps on improving (and have dramatic tension/comedy). Hetakoi and Suzuka would be a good example. I don't mind if it's an anime or manga, any is good. I just like anime with 20+ episodes and resolved (no more later seasons needed or being produced/shown) or a manga with 20+ chapters.

Katanagatari (it's 12 episodes, but they're double length, so more like 24) and is a huge example of the secret thing.
Mawaru Penguindrum, though the romance isn't quite apparent til bit into the series, and isn't heavily focused on it, but I think it should fit. Bakemonogatari, although the reveal of (some*) the secrets between characters is part of causes the bond to form between the characters, so I am not sure it counts entirely, and the 1st & 2nd seasons resolve things on a romance front, there are still other issues that new parts of the series deal with, so I am not certain on it.

The anime adaptation of Romeo & Juliet. The secret goes on for quite a while.
And might as well mention Gankutsuoh (the anime adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo) along with that. Saikano, but quickly revealed and builds up centered around that reveal. Kimi ga Nozomu Eien/Rumbling Hearts. Bokura ga Ita, might as well mention along Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou, especially the manga, regarding the male protag's past. Ai Yori Aoshi. The secret isn't between the main couple, but between them and the rest of the world.

Romance and secret? Check out the classic Kare Kano (both anime & manga). The anime has 26 episodes and the manga has 21 volumes. The story is longer in the manga where you can see the characters grow even more.

mmm, I'd say True Tears could fit the bill, somehow. It's a romance/drama, but it's only 13 episodes long.
Probably even H2O: Footprints in the Sand has a secret sort of (if I remember well). Again it is a romance/drama, but it's only 12 episodes long. In this case the story has some fairytale undertones in it.

You might want to try Sola. I watched it 5 years ago so the finer details escape me but it satisfies most of your requirements. There's certainly drama and secret pasts involved, and it's only 13 episodes long so give it a go if you have time.

This is gonna sound odd but try the Ghost Hunt manga. Main girl has a crush on her boss but its not that simple. There is an anime but I say manga since you said you want resolved, when the anime aired the last 2 manga vols weren't out yet. It's not drama kinda comedy/horror but try it if you get some time.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I have heard of some of the anime/manga listed, but I have a few questions. I have watched some of the anime listed also (especially Romeo x Juliet).
For Mawaru Penguindrum, can you give me a comparison of another anime on how the romance is? And also for Ghost Hunt (still shocked about the suggestion), how is the romance developed? And is it brought back from time to time? Any comparison of another anime with the same type of romance (amount)? For Sola, I will read the manga since it is longer. Nogizawa Haruka no Himitsu I heard of before but never looked into it. By the anime cover I have seen, it looks like a children's romance anime. Does it develop into a serious anime? Not serious to a point where that's all, but does it fit for people who dislike the type of romance in DN Angel? (I don't hate it, I loved the story but wanted the characters to be a bit older). Kanatagatari I seen on forums before but never looked into it since it was 13 episodes. I just realized that it was 50 minutes (as you pointed out), so I will give it a go. Is there any action? I enjoy when there is action involved (especially since it's fantasy also). For Kare Kano, I watched around 6 episodes and became bored since each episode seemed to have a simple "dating" theme with them trying to understand each other.

Oh, and for Katanagatari: Yes, it has action. A little bit "artsy" but it still good IMO.

@jedinat: Ive heard critics of the manga art before, it's not for everyone. It does "soften" as the series progresses. If you look at the art from vol 1-3 to 7-9, art is definitely different. Inada-sensei's design changed for whatever reason. Story is good enough to look past the art imho but I know what you mean, Ive not read certain manga cuz I dont like the art.

Also I forgot before, but Accel World definitely fits, as Kuroyukihime has quite a few secrets, and it also has lots of action.

And I watched Accel World, somewhat disliked the fact that the guy was fat, otherwise the plot was fine. A new season will probably come out for it.

Since it's not mentioned here so far, I'll throw in Bitter Virgin as a manga about a romance with a secret, only in this case the guy's secret is that he KNOWS the girl's secret, a secret she doesn't want anyone to know about. It gets rather serious at times, and deals a lot with the guy's trying to protect her and keep her secret without letting her know that he already knows.
As for DNAngel, if you mean the manga I'm not sure it ever ended? I know it went on hiatus for a time, but I don't know if it ever finished. Other romances with secrets include: Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne - the boy the mahou shoujo falls for is secretly the man who's always fighting her, and he originally appeared and tried to seduce her in order to stop her R-15 - Far from serious, but the hero's main love interest is the only one who doesn't know he's a famous "porn novel" author |
