It's becaue it's popular and in the public domain, so anyone can use it without having to pay royalties or deal with some angry company's lawyers, and got a guaranteed audience because it's popular. An already matured cash cow always ready for milking by anybody. That is why it is so popular still in my country too.

2) public domain so no lawyer issue to use popular work. 3) It have random weird imagery. especially point 3 (with help of point 2) allow everyone to interpret the story in many different angle and this also applied in west. so not just japan exclusive thought by some reason creepy doll like Alice is popular. not sure where that come from

I think at least some Japanese use washing machine, but dry on the clothesline (unless it's raining then they'll use a backup drying machine). That's really smart because air drying prevents clothes shrinkage. At least that's what I've seen, but I haven't gone into every Japanese house. In America we don't hand wash. We all use washing machines. Even poor people just go to these stores we have dedicated to washing machines. Nobody hand washes, except the rich who want to pay somebody to do it. We also dry clean but only for important clothes, like suits and fancy dresses. |

The fact it's public domain can't be it all. For instance, you don't see other children's novels from the same era getting much attention (say treasure island, tom sawyer etc.). Though Alice does have weird imagery going for it.
On the flipside, I can't imagine Alice in Wonderland is easily translated, it has very... idiosyncratic language (Can you really translate something like Jabberwocky?). I'm just curious about the history of the book in Japan. Is it widely read? Also, Alice is not 15 in the novel. She is pre-pubescent, and there's a lot of humour derived from Victorian primary school education. My guess is she's somewhere between the age of 6 and 10. |

probably something to do with one of the theme: Imagination does stimulate people to "Imagine" their own alice story which make it popular especially in Fanfic and Fanart
Other reason probably because of it originally children story. because the story is bizarre and strange this make the children remember for long time until they are grown up which then they realize hidden meaning well that's one way too look at it

Actually, is it more common to specifically reference an event or character in Alice in Wonderland, or Through the Looking Glass? I'm pretty sure the former is more well-known, so I guess that's the answer. |

That was why the original question was pretty strange: What average person would NOT hand wash at least the smallest items? |
