Oh mikasa, as much as a badass she is, she's still a rookie compared to levi. Not only does he single handedly bring the female titan down on her ass, he fully focuses on the main task at hand, and saves mikasa in the process. His loss is also far greater than mikasa and still doesn't let his feelings affect his judgment.

This was a depressing episode.

Levi showing the difference between him and everyone else.As shown right as he had to save her ass the female titan would have taken some damage from mikasa then one shooted her. Levi messes up his leg having to save her from the titans trap. And that is the fight iq I was talking about the members of his squad missing. Don't just go for the kill attack then anticipate your opponents counter then move.

Damn, Levi is a beast!! I can't remember if this is filler or not, but if it is, it is well done regardless.

Prior to this episode, I was rather impartial to Levi's character. That's no longer the case. As skilled as that FT was, Levi freakin curbstomped her to tears. I didn't see that coming. And that track they used during that ass-beating was superb.

However, it still didn't stop the episode from being super depressing. I was hoping we'd find out who the FT is soon, but I'm not as sure about it happening anymore. Oh well.
On an unrelated note, there don't seem to be too many episodes or opportunities left for this season to end with a *successful* big hero moment from Eren. I sure hope he gets another chance. Because as much as I understand the causes for all the failures thus far, it still sucks to see failure after failure after failure. I feel like sooner or later, this plot has to reward Eren and us with something. I mean, jeez, I haven't felt this depressed watching an action-packed anime since Berserk. lol

Levi so op that the author had to injure him to not kill all the titans. He is the only character with a battle skill level of 11 out of 10.

The filler in this episode is actually a good denouement, so to speak, for the tragedy the legion had to endure. It also brought great emphasis on how dire being in the Scouting Legion is, what with dragging corpses back inside the Walls all while being caught up by Titans and since the corpses are putting too much weight to the carriages, it was better to leave them behind.

This scene definitely leveled up the "Crapsack World" trope this series is going for.

Also, I really got to hand it to Levi. I think he's one of those tragic characters who really cares for his comrades that he'd leave behind personal feelings just so everybody else can pull through. Like in the earlier episodes, though he was a neat freak, he still willingly stained his hands with a comrade's blood as he lay dying and told him about all the great help he had done for the squad before he passed on, despite not really knowing if his words were heard or not.

His selflessness in this episode, though, was a lot more tragic. Levi willingly gave away Petra's badge (the only memento he could take and the only thing left he'd have of her), saying that it was Ivan's and making this a much more emotional scene by admitting that "I take these as proof that they were alive." Being hounded by Petra's father about his daughter and marriage was just adding salt to an already painful wound. And he went through this kind of ordeal for over 5 years running...

Humanity's strongest soldier, indeed.

Remeber female titan can prioritise regeneration. I think she focus regenerating on her arm the moment she felt a pin hit her. If she is a pro, she should know what move is going to happen after that, so it was a random swing to block. If she could see, she would have aimed to catch...

Mikasa did a fatal mistake in her approach. Notice that Levi attacked relentlessly the FT from different angles, hooking the -trees-.
However, Mikasa directly hooked herself on the FT neck and due to this, guessing her position is possible from the angle of the hook and how the wire is pulled. Notice that panned camera on the FT face the moment Mikasa's hook connected, which set the alarm for Levi, exactly because he realized that the FT figured out Mikasa's position.

Furthermore, Mikasa wasn't discreet in her approach (her yell among all things considered), adding further information for the FT to locate her.

A bit of a let down for me.... While there were some great moments with Mikasa/Eren recollecting their childhood, as well as Levi transcending the huge losses after the death of his team, I felt like the rest of the episode reverted to the show's old formula of smothering the viewer with unnecessary images of disparity.

For almost the entire episode, what we get is more death, terror, desecration, sadness, trauma, and destruction, all told to us through scenes of fallen bodies being abandoned, the hopes of family's being dashed as they learn of their deceased children, the anger of the populace for bearing more and more casualties for no discernible gain.... It all tends to grate on (me) the viewer after a while.

Now I don't mind if this show wants to be dark; it's actually something I really admire about it. I enjoy the serious tone and like connecting to the characters through their sorrows. But this level of excess, of unnecessarily depressing imagery, gets too manipulative/over the top for me, and fails to actually enhance the story/characters.... After a while, it seems as if the only way you get to know the characters is through seeing them react to horrible situations, which can get pretty tiring.

Fortunately, the show has pulled back from this problem before by giving the characters some genuinely triumphant moments of success, which lifted them out of the depressing environment and gave the viewer a reason to cheer/care for them and the story. Remember the part when Armin had to convince the a garrison to let Eren survive? Or how Commander Pixis kept soldiers from leaving en masse by reminding them of the fate their families would suffer? Or when the Trainees successfully executed a plan to obtain more natural gas for their 3D maneuver gear? I can only hope that we'll have some of these moments in the next episode or two, because this show needs a fresh injection of anti-depressants to keep me from dropping out of it.... But like Eren, Armin, and Mikasa, I have hope for the show and its writers, even in this moment of darkness and disparity....

those levi fighting scenes were great! although not much happened I think it was nice to take a beat and see a bit of the aftermath the recon corps have to deal with. I was so sad when I realized the patch Levi took to remind himself of Petra he gave to someone else to give them comfort. a lot of people try to pull off the 'jerk with a heart of gold' but I think the author really does a good job with Levi. I always love how I can't see where this series is going, which is exciting for someone who can usually predict the ending of everything XD

That's the morale of this.

Mikasa is still a rookie afterall.

Levi is pretty damn badass. Guy also knows how to prioritize and keep the pain where it needs to be in order to survive another day. The loss of his squad and Petra is devastating, but he just carries on. Hell of a guy.

Just an emotional kick all episode. All the bodies, having to abandon them, how stupidity can just cost more lives, etc. Mikasa made a error in judgment and that caused Levi to get hurt enough that he couldn't take action to defend their dead later. Of course if the other guy hadn't stupidly gone back for the body then they wouldn't have gotten swarmed like that.

You made a very good point. However, I rechecked the scene, and Levi did slice at the left shoulder, so the left arm should not have much movement. Furthermore, she was unable to move the hand not much higher than the shoulder; hence, if Misaka's attack completed, her attack might have gone through and been successful.

Hmmm... So they all warped to a different dimension, and enter a Valvrave like world, where mechas abound and are the evolution of the titans?

Crying so hard since the scene of the family members. So many bonus points to Levi's character as well
