Story does seem to be like a sports anime with former friends turned rivals and such

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/inte...ory-characters

Quote:
Before graduating from elementary school, he participated in a swimming tournament along with his fellow swimming club members, Makoto Tachibana, Nagisa Hazuki, and Rin Matsuoka. After achieving victory, each of the boys went their separate ways.

Time passed, and in the middle of their uneventful high school lives, Rin appears and challenges Haruka to a match, showing Haruka his overwhelming power.
Anybody else seeing some parallels with Kuroko no Basuke?

Yeah i mean I don't get the insinuation that anime as a collective thing somehow sinks or swims based on what Kyoto Animation chooses to spend its time on in a season. Well I mean I know that's probably not the intention but it sort of feels like thats how the situation is being treated based on the community reaction. The histrionics over this announcement are baffling to me, I mean if people aren't interested then it just seems to me that they should find something else to watch that does strike their fancy.

And it's not like it's the first or last series that's going to feature guys anyway. You'd think the haters would realize that it's probably going to be sports related.

KyoAni does what it is best at... making money with anime without wasting its time on plot and character personalities... in this case they are just expanding the fanbase.

In any case, the boys look cute, and as long as they waste their time on camera being that way, instead of doing scary things... say express genuine rather than superficial feeling or learn from silly mistake, the anime is going to be successful, and we can almost all enjoy the rage of KyoAni-fanboys online

I'm sure Kyoani rather not focus on people who can't get past their bias.

I am a bit confused. I am not sure you are saying young men being friends is shallow or genuine.

More meaningful than what some biased people think, I suppose.

Well, this story is based on a light novel (High Speed! of Kojo Ouji), so I guess if the story is deep and meaningful (or not) depends largely on the light novel

Not as much as you think. Chuunibyou showed that the director of the show has pretty big liberties in "adapting" the material submitted to the Kyoto Animation Award into something that can be animated. It's more dependent on what Utsumi wants to do with the concept.

Apart from the homophobic haters, there are also people genuinely upset because they expected:

...and did not get it.

Can't say I disagree with that notion.

K-On was wholesome family entertainment, that ended up being licensed to the Japanese Disney Channel. Just because something isn't Oscar-worthy doesn't make it meaningless garbage.

While I don't expect this series to be the most complex and deep thing ever, a story about swimming and friendship is not meaningless either.

Same here... it will be another standard KyoAni anime, looking to expand the studio's fandom with not Oscar-winning material, that some like and others don't.

Now whether one likes this, K-On, and the rest of these anime usually has to do with the show, not the gender of its characters... but several years of animated moeblobs obviously has created a strong bias within the studio's fans.

Basically, I couldn't care less if young boys are sexually objectified, it happens all the time in real life anyway.

My problem with K-on was that the characters had a goal that they were supposedly working towards, but we got maybe one episode where they actually worked towards it, one episode where they achieved it, and a couple dozen episodes of them goofing off in between. If you're going to have a story about people pursuing a dream, you need to show them pursuing their dream.

If Free actually has the guys working towards an objective, I'll watch, but if it's one episode of set up, five episodes of frolicking in the water, one episode of practice, five more episodes of frolicking, then one episode where they achieve their goal, count me out.

I have to say the fandom that's developing for this thing is getting a little obnoxious too....I mean...the thing doesn't even air until July

It might not even turn out to be worth the hype. But Imma gonna support it anyway, just because I am seriously sickened by the hatred that this is spawning. If you're THAT threatened over the fact that some studio is putting out something for a female audience, then you seriously need some therapy.

I get the feeling though that someone is going to pull some threats over in Japan, like they do for that basketball show.
