You yourself seem to be unacquainted with certain facts. Maryland was founded by Catholics in the mid-17th century specifically to create a Catholic colony. Unfortunately for the founders, their willingness to tolerate other religions was not reciprocated by Puritan usurpers who had fled Virginia.

Another factor in the propagation of Catholicism in America was the French, of course, who themselves colonized portions of what later became the United States (such as Louisiana). French Catholics also immigrated into New England prior to the Revolutionary War. And the Spanish, who colonized Florida and California

Also I think it's arguable that in England, where Catholicism was assaulted by the Crown in the mid-16th century, and where a rival religion was established as the national church, Catholicism can be viewed as a sect in relation to the whole.

I am on less sure ground when it comes to this sort of sociology, but overall we seem to agree about the importance of religion as an answer to the question "Why is sex such a big deal...?"

Perhaps you have never seen the American broadcast version (Cardcaptors) or seen any sort of comparison. I clearly referred to anime being "heavily edited for broadcast" and I think the show is a good example, as do other forum members.

oh well, I didnt know that, but the influence of the catholic church in the states is no where even near as the influence of them here in latinamerica. Im still a bit exceptic about how big the catholic influence was, as you said it, they werent exactly welcomed with open arms.

and I was refering to the same too! since we were discussing censored anime refering sexual content... and yup, here we got the complete unedited version with ALL the episodes and all the stories and the relationships (even the real names!) , thats why I was shocked (and very pleased )when watching it, since latinamerica's society is highly homophobic.

Its really a huge contrast, people went outrageous when Janet Jakson had her wardrobe "incident", but me and my family here considered that US society was overreacting way too much about it. Since most media comes from the states, and most movies have their big share of sex scenes, one may have the false stereotype that you people are actually more tolerant... well, old traditions die hard.

Yeah, I didn't understand some people's reaction to this at all. I mean, it's a breast. Tons of children see breasts every day 'cause that's where they get their food from. It's just a part of the human body, if she would have dropped her pants and underwear I could have understood the reactions, but one breast? Come on, the only difference in appearance from a male one is that it's larger and nicer to look at and touch. It may just be because I am one of those damn Swedish European communist bastards, but I really don't understand what the hell the big deal is with that whole incident.

Oh, and hentai is for the most part pretty creepy with lots of rape and unconcensual sex, but of course there are exceptions to every rule - just that most that has been released in the US seems to lack this a whole lot. In my opinion it's better than pornography featuring living beings since it's not real and no-one is hurt, used or degraded during the process.

the reaction to it was the breast was shown in an inappropriate location. You can watch porn all you want, as long as you do it in the appropriate place. The fuss was that it was done in a performance where the content (breasts) didn't match the general audience (family tv)

So? I don't understand why all the extreme reactions and "think of the CHILDREN!" type screeching - most kids probably wouldn't care, and they've all seen it before anyways.

What's the next step, not breast-feeding or helping your own children take baths and the like because they might, gasp, see UNCOVERED SKIN!

porn

n : creative activity (writing or pictures or films etc.) of no literary or artistic value other than to stimulate sexual desire [syn: pornography, porno, erotica, smut]

PS Gotta love how they put it.

Now key phase here is stimulate sexual desire. What this definition state is that any object (writing, drawing, picture, event) that
1. no literary or artistic value
2. stimulate sexual desire
can be classify as "porn".

Now everyone's definition of artistic value may vary as it depends on common sense (A man could, and did, claim he took kiddie porn as "art"), but some (not all) h-story actually has value in its plot (omg).

Another point is that the conditions must be met for a meme to be consider "porn". For example nude statue are not consider porn because they have "artistic value".

lit·er·ar·y
  1. Of, relating to, or dealing with literature: literary criticism.
  2. Of or relating to writers or the profession of literature: literary circles.
  3. Versed in or fond of literature or learning.
    1. Appropriate to literature rather than everyday speech or writing.
    2. Bookish; pedantic.
ar·tis·tic
  1. Of or relating to art or artists: the artistic community.
  2. Sensitive to or appreciative of art or beauty: an artistic temperament.
  3. Showing imagination and skill: an artistic design.
As people had shown, h related object can has a half-decent plot. Using deductive reasoning, we can state that

h-anime, as an activity, has
stimulate sexual desire value but contain exception in
no literary or artistic value
Therefore I conclude h-anime does not equal to porn.

Hentai!!

I know animesuki doesn't publicly advertise it, but who says we can't discuss it? Just try not to post links to any of it, whether its indirect or not.

First off I want to know how many people watch hentai? And what are their favorite ones and/or if they can give recommendations to those need them. I like the bible black series, definetely good stuff. But also give props to holy virgin, that's good stuff

Who says it hasn't already been discussed? I believe this is the latest thread. Here is another. And another.

A thread asking for simple lists of favorite shows is not going to live very long I expect.

Although revolving around the same subject, none of those threads have anything to do with this one. So don't post useless junk.

To stay ontopic, I don't watch hentai. But I heard immoral sisters is popular.

Depending on the story/plot and characters is how much I will enjoy a series that's classified hentai...take A Kite for example, I wouldn't consider it hentai as much as I would a dark mature anime. Of course, it's still classified hentai so, meh :P

Flutter of Birds was decent, as was I Love You...I Love You wasn't much to write home about, but it had a fairly decent story to carry it, despite that both series tend to have the gratuitous sex in copious amounts.

Futari Ecchi, which many classify hentai, is one of my all-time favorites shows. I, personally, do not classify it as a hentai because it doesn't explicitly go into showing the sex as much as it just alludes to it.

"Hentai", as you'll see it in most English-speaking anime fan communities, refers to anime/manga/games with explicit sexual content.

Please don't use the word, though. As kj1980 points out, in the Japanese otaku lingo thread, that use of "hentai"isn't really correct. (Although calling something "H" was correct, but isn't really used so much any more.)

And, despite what The Chaos suggested, a quick Google search does reveal the meaning. Your search was blocked for the related sexual content most commonly found alongside the misuse of the word.
