It looks brilliant. The advance in graphics really compliment the brilliant voice acting, and the music only makes it even better. It's just a shame that I won't ever be able to play it unless it gets ported to PC or some sort of conversion project becomes official.

Indeed.
Though I've been thinking about getting the two current portable releases
just to see how it compares to the original episodes.
But it would be real amazing to be able to read too,
the voice acting seems excellent.

The portable is basically all the arcs on the PSP in two games like the PC versions?

Four games. Portable 1 and 2 cover EP1-4; Portable 3 and 4 cover EP5-8.
They're exactly like the PS3 port, just... well, with no HD

Huh, why did I even both buying the PS3 port then? I'm thinking of cancelling my order now...

Are the portables gonna be in English/able to have an English translation patched? My knowledge of Japanese is pretty weak, and i'd rather not ruin such an amazing story by half-reading it all again.

If not, i'll just burn with envy as you all get to play your fancy HD voice acted games and understand it. xD

Not officially. Someone might try his hand at making an English patch someday, but it would surely break any ToS, not to mention unauthorized abuse of the Witch-Hunt's translation.

Given that you're relying on the existence of an english patch to consider buying it, I personally wouldn't take the gamble.

/sigh If I won the lottery I would totally found a fan-oriented licensing company and try to get this ported... even if it ended up costing me... but until then its only a pipe dream

I remember Sony of America pretty much saying that they wouldn't bring over VNs because they're not technically video games :/

You sure they said that? I only remember them saying something about blahblah, every game must have dubbing, if they are to be released in NA.

But even if they did say that...They wouldn't be the ones to publish them anyway. So what's their business who buys what license? And also, it's not for them to decide what is game and what's not, damnit.
But that aside, having a VN translated for a home console would be a truly surprising occurrence which I have not very high hopes for.
But we are getting Hakuouki released for a PSP, which is a Sony console too, so maybe there is a hope for the future.

Maybe, but there's a few VN titles for PSP already that I can think of off the top of my head. They might just be more comfortable distributing them for hand-held consoles than the regular consoles.

Corpse Party is like a VN, but then again, that game has actual exploration and direct interaction with the environment like a 16-bit RPG (it is a remake of a game that was based on another game that was built on an RPG system, after all).

Can you guys please stop whining about it?
It's really annoying. If you have nothing to say about the game itself and are just complaining that you can't read Japanese and Sony won't let you have it in America because they're so evil, either study harder in weaboo class or just don't post.
That's... kinda short-sighted, just saying 'it won't happen, fuck you petitioners and your vain requests!' like that.
If stuff from the Fate franchise can sell,
then there should be some marked for Umineko as well,
for example if someone like Rockin' Android where to start by releasing Ougon on PSN/XBL or something. Or at least if someone dubbed the anime,
even if it isn't a good adaptation, it'll be better than going straight for the heavy source material who many would pass up simply because of length.
So start with something simpler that can sprout interest.

Personally? No, I don't think the actual Umineko VNs will ever be localized,
at the very least I'm holding out for Ougon/X/Cross,
but I won't say 'it definitely will not happen' either when there are people like the petitioners who's trying to show their numbers
and there are publishers who take interest in such things nowadays.

It's not the language boarder so much as the extra cost to ship between regions.

Now I'm guessing you're gonna start bitching about how stingy or irresponsible we are with our money, aren't you?

Only costs 8 bucks to the EU from Paletweb if you use the cheapest shipping method
and 18 otherwise, so I never found shipping costs to be an issue either.

Not quite sure I'm following you, I was merely stating objectively what I thought in regards to localization of the remakes overseas.
All I'm saying is if things like Fate/Extra which is 70% text can find a market over here,
as well as with the possibility of using the fighting titles or the anime as an introduction test overseas, saying that it definitely won't happen ever is a bit harsh.
While I'm not personally rooting for it, the petitioners are trying to show their numbers in hope of getting the PS3/PSP remakes overseas,
and I don't want to sneer on their efforts even if it seems too much to expect any developer to break the ice in regards to pure VNs overseas at this point in time.
And even if it did happen, Umineko would certainly not be one of the first picks in terms of popularity.

While I can't talk for the entire forum, I've bought both EP1-4 and 5-8 and not once have I spoken ill of WH's translation efforts,
and I believe most of the forum is the same, the less thankful ones merely stand out more.

At any rate, I can tell that this is a topic that greatly offends you on a personal level,
so I'll at least apologize for my lack of tact.
