Was the rape scene necessary? A theory people are throwing around on the TvTropes forums is that Haruto raped her because he was restraining himself from biting others for a period of time so his condition got worse and lost even more control over himself.

That's how I feel about it as well. It helps tell the story they're trying to tell, but at the same time it felt like they wanted to be shocking. An alternative might have been Haruto just violently attacking her and she could be traumatized by that.

It is necessary:
- the "Do you abandon your humanity?" finally had serious consequences and it wasn't avoided for the sake of being nice - it mentally cracks both Saki and Haruto to the required amount - Aina's "Holy Spirit" proved to be hopeful wish with reality violently crushing it with "You are cursed to be a monster" (which is why it was mentioned against just after the OP ended). I wonder if Haruto and Saki will still use that term or if they will revert to "Forsaken Vampire" - "having happened" has more consequences than "almost happened" and is harder to heal - Haruto is not in danger of becoming a monster anymore: he has become one - strict reminder that, in it's essence, Valvrave is first-most a tragedy... and hint that things will go only downwards from here There are enough reasons for it to justify it's existence and be necessary for future story goals. Other than that, it is like asking "Was Aina's death necessary?", "Was Saki becoming a pilot necessary?", "Was Shouko's fake death necessary?", etc. No plot device is technically necessary but with Okouchi as the writer, he'll take care the cruelest plot devices are chosen. He is not one to shy away from using unpopular plot devices or comforting to the fans.
