That wasn't criticism. I liked it too. It's just very unusual for a shounen protagonist to do that kind of thing -consciously or not- so I was shocked the author had the balls to do that.

More than whether these yokais were actually human girls or not we now should worry about Rikuo's current condition, because for anyone who still hasn't noticed, he's rotten and left into a state where he barely can keep fighting.

Nowadays, though. Back in the days you'd have mangas like Harenchi Gakuen, Mazinger Z, Hokuto no Ken, Saint Seiya and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure all of which were published in Weekly Shōnen Jump and in which the hero wouldn't always be able to spare his enemies. Also, it wasn't as if all the enemies back then were EVIL or monsters. Some of them would could also be noble and good, but their views were opposed to the protags and they were very determined in carrying them out, instead of simply bending to the MCs will after some preaching and a beating like a huge amount of villains these days. Personally, I think villains in shōnen manga have become really bland since the 90s.

Well, that's the perspective I have, which could be wrong, but the more shōnen manga I read, the more I think my perspective is not wrong.

This is why I've been enjoying Nurarihyon. Whilst the villains aren't all that amazing. They've been interesting and determined enough to do what they had to, and so has Rikuo as the MC. There's no over-idealisation - or, at least, it's not overdone.

When i looked at 174 it had kinofa tsundere feel to it but when i read it I completely lost that feel. i'd have to be reaching to call it that the Yura seen a long time ago had much more of a tsundere feel to it.

Spoiler for c172: - poor Tori never gets a break - Kino wakes up and the mysterious stranger is... no wait, he left and she was found by Nura Fodder and Kubi - Rikuo slays Torikai, Maki screams but thankfully Tori is saved thanks to another new power of Rikuo's - Rikuo slashes at Kyousai but it ends up Kyousai already ran away and Rikuo just attacked his ink or something - Kyousai uses his painting powa to restore his own arm and capture Rikuo in his painting or something - Rikuo is unable to move - mysterious stranger still hiding, Kana got lost somewhere along the way or searching for popcorn again __________________

I'll never see Painters in the same light again... - Kyosai also makes painting looks freaking badass XD (his style also fits gerat with Hiroshi's art style) - I feel very sorry for Rikuo tough (but the artwork makes me like the scene... forgive me Rikuo-sama...) - while Itaku protects Torii&Maki, Tsurara goes to find Kyosai, for some reason thinking she might stand a chance in fighting him XD - well... I sure as hell didn't expect her to slaughter that HM bunch O_O (and judging by reports given to Nurarihyon, these guys ain't really such pushovers) - Tsurara doesn't like Kyosai's pictures?! :-O - Kyosai is revealed to be her father, having to please Setsura in order to buy a cool brush on Arawashi market [I am just making lame jokes here :P] - Tsurara starts destroying his painting with cool poses - me approves - Kyosai is not happy about his masterpieces getting destroyed and summons a legion of HM yokai to assault her - dear lord Rikuo, you sure looks terrifying there :-O __________________
