the lost files from The People's Republic of Kugistan
well more like the lost folder from my main external Hard Drive which I had named "People's Republic of Kugistan". to get to the point, it seems that due to some software corruption in my picture folder on my external, (with the CHKDSK utility that almost always comes up at start up) my picture folder ( with about 40+ GB's of material) disappeared after I started up with the annoying CHKDSK scan procedure) now, considering I've been collecting the stuff in that folder for years with the occasional DVD back-up's and such, I think some of the manga files started getting corrupted or something ( or the area/partition/etc.. of my external HDD that they where being stored on) well I wouldn't exactly say my picture folder that I have mention actually completely disappeared, as shown here
 though the files vanishing on me like a ghost kind of confuse me, and there's the fact that they still leave a noticeable footprint on my External Hard Drive, which leads me to believe that I'm going to have to resort to really tricky measures to bring them back into existence as they once where. any help will be greatly appreciated on me getting those files back |

Now why would you place your valuable assets in such unstable locales? Do you know how many revolutions these places have, on and off?
Jokes aside, I might move the surviving files out of there. I don't know much about file recovery, but here's a freeware app. I'm going to hope that the file system tables aren't screwed, and if so you're out of luck, but go ahead and give it a shot. http://www.recuva.com/ |

If it was just an error in the ntfs file table, then there should be a generic $folder with $files inside. One would have to rename all these files so that they can be used as picture files again.
If CHKDSK just made the folder disappear completely I would question the consistency of the whole hdd as is. Even if you can recover files, then I would never again store something on that hdd (chances are you loose data again - broken hdds don't have a habbit to magically fix themselves physically). Anyway a good file recover tool is Active@ File Recovery. Admittely the tool is not freeware. But I rescued a lot of data from screwed drives of PCs of relatives of mine with it. It is easy to use and supports all major windows file systems.

The only problem, indeed...is that neither of them are freeware. But the results are worth the investment IMHO. Otherwise, there's TestDisk that is reportedly good and free but otherwise not that user friendly.
