Ratings for Haruhi are unavailable and would hold too little meaning. The series airs on various regional channels, as opposed to the national channels which are usually listed in the rating posts (NTV, NHK, Fuji TV, TBS, TV Asahi, TV Tokyo). DVD sales will be the only way to gauge the second season's popularity.

Seems as if Cross game has been creeping up. Are people catching on?

Anime that generally rate at 3.0% and lower tend to fluctuate wildly, so it's not a very good way of getting a good handle of the popularity of a show. At around 2.0, Cross Game is about where I'd expect a show like this, so I don't think that there's all that much useful data available. It's not an otaku show either, so even the DVD sales won't be that meaningful - probably the best gauge of its success will be the impact it has on the sales of Cross Game manga.

Shin Mazinger is doing alright I see. Can you imagine that Mazinger Z from the 1970s achieved a rating of 30.4%?
Crazy isn't it? Still, 2.5% shows that It still holds a fanbase with all these good shows in recent years. It withstood the test of time.

Kai is impressive as well. After 20 years, DBZ is still going strong with 10% rating.

Canaan airs on AT-X, a satellite channel; and various regional channels, so it wouldn't show up on this list.

Phantom isn't really an otaku show, so there really isn't that much of a niche for it. On the other hand, Three Kingdoms stories might not appeal to otaku, but they are ridiculously popular in Japan (probably even moreso than Japanese history and classical literature), so it isn't that much of a surprise to see a relatively serious adaptation make some inroads.

- I thought it would be interesting to post the few YTV numbers, since they're available ever so rarely... it is the the very first channel 07-GHOST and GA are broadcast on, while Inuyasha is clearly a rerun and Souten Kourou airs on NTV earlier.

- You know something's gone wrong when Phantom and FMA get the same ratings. Naw, to comment on this seriously: I'd have expected the start of the "new" FMA material to get more viewers, but that's apparently not happening - maybe time will be needed, or maybe the series will keep on jumping back and forth. On the other hand, I tend to believe that this season's TBS Thursday shows aren't as popular as previous ones, leading certain people to watch TV Tokyo instead of Taishou Yakyuu Musume... but this is indeed late night when numbers are completely unpredictable, this could be a mere coincidence.

- One thing isn't a coincidence, though: the awful performance of Element Hunters. Going from the 5.*% ratings of Major to 0.6% on the same timeslot last week... I can only wonder why the usual "rerun - new season" trend of showing Major didn't keep going, when it was working that well (and I believe there's still a lot of source material to work with?). Awful choice, really... and Erin is getting low ratings because of this too.

- Finally, if anyone is wondering why Yatterman and TM8.0 don't show up on Video Research's top 10 whereas they do here... Videor included Kawa no Hikari (a movie-size special episode) and another non-Japanese animated show (Curious George) that aired on NHK, while they weren't in the charts posted on 2ch. I thought I'd include Kawa no Hikari but not the latter.

・ I have no clue why FMA is doing so much better in Kansai, but I sure wish I knew the exact reasons. The first DVD/BD volume will be out by the end of this month - which region's ratings will the sale numbers reflect? -drum roll-
・ The new victims of the general decrease of TV ratings are now clearly the Saturday and Sunday morning TV Tokyo line-ups. And to think that shows like Shugo Chara and Reborn had been pulling constantly good ratings for so long ...

if i remember correctly R2 did better in Kansai too. Only thing I can think of would be more prolific advertising on MBS in Osaka as opposed to TBS in Tokyo....
