Here's a thought: who's paying for Miho's stay at Ooarai? Is she still being supported by her mother in spite of being technically a failure based on the precepts of the Nishizumi school? I mean, it looks to me like she's renting the place she's in right now, and I don't see a 16-year old being able to support herself unless she's been working part-time behind the scenes.

Heh. I saw that on Danbooru earlier. I considered posting it myself, but I figured somebody else would be sure to get around to it eventually.

That's actually a pretty good question, considering what we find out later about her initial departure from Kuromorimine. Her mother could have been supporting her at a safe, don't-have-to-associate-with-the-failure-but-she's-still-my-daughter distance. Then Miho rises to prominence in senshado again, causing Shiho to initiate the "I'm disowning you" plan.

...and then probably Miho would have had to look for work.

If anything, it gives a perfectly legitimate excuse for Yukari to volunteer her room to have Miho bunk in. :P

How about her dad - who just can't understand what all the fuss is about this girl past time that his daughters and mother are all crazy about?

I think most people are misunderstanding what disinheriting here means. Shiho wouldn't be recognizing Miho as a Nishizumi, not necessarily cutting off the family relationship. It's a sort of difficult concept to understand given how interconnected the clan and the profession is in traditionalist Japanese families.

One things I've not quite figured out yet. At the beginning, the first time we see Miho get up, she starts changing and reacts as if something is going to happen to her while changing. Then she opens her eyes and says something like "Oh that's right, I'm not at home anymore". Anyone have any idea what that might be about?

While disinheriting hasn't come up a great deal in the anime and manga and other bit of Japanese media I've dealt with, it has come up on occasion, and as I recall each time the person who was disinherited was effectively dead, as far as their family was concerned. There was no contact, no assistance, in several cases their name was not even allowed to be mentioned. If they were raped and murdered on the road, the family would not know or care.

Not even the Little Army manga has answers to that, as Miho's been given very little direct supervision in that one.. I assume that once Miho got into Black Forest, she was put through a specific routine everyday, likely vaguely military-like. Let your imagination go wild on this one.

I figure it was just an ingrained military-like daily routine. Wake up, have the bed made and be changed into your uniform before the drill-seargent comes into the barracks, or something similar. Or rather, get up and do those things, as you will probably accomplish most of those tasks while still mostly asleep, as she demonstrated.

I can't give you specifics off the top of my head. As I said, this isn't something that has come up a great deal. Just to be clear, I'm speaking from general impression that has been left with me from various bits of media relating to Japan (some anime, manga, and movies): I cannot right now point you to a specific example and say "here is what I am talking about" because my memory isn't that clear. I may have to do some digging to see if I can find what I'm thinking of.

It is also possible that I am confusing this for something else. It is possible I'm getting some eastern and western cultural concepts mixed in my head, or maybe something else. As I said, this isn't an issue that comes up all that often.

Never mind. What you know is fact of history, but these social standard already ended at Pre-war Showa era. At Edo, Meiji, Taisho era, 勘当(kandou)really was expellment from family, and surrounding social community. But it requires Bureaucratic paperwork, very serious movement for cut off family relations.

Now, in modern Japan, that term means gets mild.

Usually, Kandou means expression of "I don't want to see your face, go anywhere and live yourself, lad" from parents, or Leader of Family, at confrontation of family affair. Many time, it only means harsh insult term for child. That makes heart cry, but no more.

In other way, person who gets pronounce of Kandou, must leave from house, but many case, it just cause for change living place from family home to another, like relative's house, or domitory of school or company, or simply, rent a room. But not so serious social matter as old society custom.

Many case, especially minor age, children gets funding which had time limit from parents until graduate school and get job for living oneself. Then, sail away for new world by own.

But this not means total separation. Other family member except Leading Family Person (father, sometime mother, or grandparent) who pronounce Kandou keep in touch, in many case. You can see these situation in many story.

I'm one of the few here who was playing WoT way before GuP, way back during the Open Beta in 2010. While I have been a military buff for a while now, my interest was mostly in firearms and aircraft, and tanks were a distant tertiary interest. It was only with WoT that I really came to like tanks in general. You can say that the reason GuP interested me so much in the first place was because of my prior like of WoT.

On topic, here's some larger preview pics of OVA 2:

Didn't realize that Yukari was displaying MRE's there. Though would we have expected anything else?

Hopefully they are the newer better tasting ones. I had one back in the early 90s and that was kind of nasty. Not horrid mind you, just not very good.

Well, at least Yukari is providing very good quantity and diversity, though in end you can still say it is all MRE.
