The camera never actually showed anything, but Jou just gained several points in my book this week. Not only is she set on world domination, she's also a futanari. There aren't very many futanari characters on TV, so having one who's so sympathetic, and in a way that likely makes some mythological sense (though that's less important to me), is something that I'm ready to embrace. The comedy of Tama trying to be Sasami was also wonderfully done, with little details like her eyes shifting as she read the text. I had no idea the gods even had instant messenger, though I suppose Google Glass might be the closest thing we humans will have to it, at least in the next few years. Tsurugi was on top of her game this week - I don't think she would've cared if she found out that Jou is futa. She would've invited her to join in. Add that to the Sasami/Kagami hints, and you have an OT3 in the making. Wonderful episode this week, five stars! A+!

This episode sure was quite the change of pace from the past few weeks. Futanari, yuri, tsundere oujo-sama, sexual harassment, NTR fetish... it sure was a lot of fun. Definitely the most comedy packed episode of the series. I enjoyed it a lot.

Let's start with the futanari, since that's how the episode began. That sure was unexpected. Is Edogawa based on any god/youkai/whatever? As far as I can tell, she grows that penis at night. I thought she turned into a man at first since her chest was completely flat at times, but I think that's just Shaft being inconsistent. Or maybe that's their idea of censorship. Anyway, doujin artists are about to get busy. Sasami even implied in the episode Edogawa would get aroused by the sight of naked girls, so they're already all set. The stuff should write itself.

So the reason Sasami and Kagami haven't managed to make friends is that they're seen as an unapproachable lesbian couple by the rest of the class. We viewers are not the only ones with yuri googles. Tama calling Kagami "onee-sama" sealed the deal for them. It turns out Kagami is surprisingly weak to that onee-sama stuff. Cute.

Having Tama impersonate Sasami made for some wonderful comedy. Their telepathic chatroom was neat. It's closer to the realm of sci-fi than fantasy. I can imagine we'll be able to have something close to that in the future.

Was Tsurugi always this much of a pervert? She was on fire this week! I can't imagine what would have happened if she had found it Edogawa had a penis. She would have probably jumped on it right away. Since she's into big breasts as well, she would have been doubly pleased.

And finally, at long last, Sasami sang the ending. It sounded a lot better than the previous versions which is only natural since they were intentionally bad.

The author is certainly using mythological sources to good effect. Mythologies everywhere, if you go back in time far enough, is always batshit crazy. Deities of uncertain gender is not a recent invention.
Modern fetishes had to have came from somewhere.

Funny how Sasami is trying to keep Ojou's secret from everyone, even Tama, despite Tama being her eyes and ears. I also wonder how much Tama understands and how much of her is truly innocent.

Oh man, holy crap this episode was ridiculous. And also hilarious. I laughed my ass off.

I dunno whether SHAFT is pandering to me or this was all in the original material, but I knew I could totally watch this series for the yuri service. Thank you based Sasami production team. Although on the animation side, this episode was a bit craptastic.

In any case, a futa is fine too. I somewhat do wonder at the seriousness of genuinely including it in the context of the story, though. Too much of this series already seems like blatant doujin material, I wonder if they can maintain the credibility of the actual plot.

You can turn most mythologies on Earth into porn with no changes to the plot. Myths are just really old doujins passed down by word of mouth, after all.

Novel readers implied that everything in this episode is canon to the books via illustration scans.

I couldn't point you to one offhand, but do some research and you'll find stories of gods who have swapped genders or simply taken "parts" from the other gender as suited them. Really, deities in a lot of mythologies were a lot more bizarre and screwed up than some people tend to think.

I'm not entirely sure the class is wrong, either. Not just speaking with yuri goggles, either. The general screwyness of Sasami's upbringing and life so far has left her somewhat poorly equipped to properly determine who or what she might love, and the unusual nature of herself and the people she deals with also may well make it more likely for her to look for love in places outside what society might consider normal.

I'm not necessarily saying Sasami is in love with Kagami, I'm just saying it's not a possibility that should be dismissed. I'm not sure Sasami really knows who she loves at the moment (beyond the conditioned love she has for her brother, of course). I'm not sure she even thinks much about it. She just enjoys being with Kagami, and that's all that matters to her.

...Now that I've said all that, maybe I should watch this latest episode and see if it completely proves me wrong.

I know it's not new (Hermaphroditus being the most famous), but I was wondering if Edogawa was based on a particular Japanese deity or youkai (since her partner is a nine-tailed fox, I thought she might be a youkai too). I can't think of one.

Agreed. Keep in mind that by definition, Sasami and her social group are outside the social norms. They literally make their own rules. In the previous story arc Sasami even tried using her godly powers to help her lose weight even though it failed.

The only link to the human world for Sasami was her family traditions. Traditions that she has now rejected. And with the mortal society also not relevant to her, Sasami has no guidelines left. There are still taboos of the universe that she follows, like "don't screw up the space time continuum" and "don't bring back the dead". Even though in the end Tsurugi was prepared to do the former and Sasami's mum succeeded in the latter.

Gods make their own rules. With enough power Sasami can marry anything and everything, and have viable offspring with a random rock on the roadside if she really wanted to. It is telling that it makes no difference even if Sasami and Kagami become a lesbian couple; there is literally no barriers for the likes of them.

I do believe this is about introducing the antagonist and let us know she is a bit schizophrenic. She is both a lonely little girl and a scheming megalomaniac. And that despite everyone knowing she is a threat, they befriend her anyway. That's the attitude of the characters. Gods try to get along with one another because mortals are fragile, and you tend to have to live with your decisions for a long time.
