Think of Ichika's harem situation like this. The girls are all rivals but they work together because each of them wants Ichika in the end. They wont let others get a march but they'll all bond together as a result.

The girls have likely realized that Ichika cant choose any one of them because if he does it massively screws up the fighting force of the academy at the same time they wont let anybody else in. Its why the group didnt originally like Kanzashi because they felt o god more competition. At the same time they'll work together for ichika's benefit like when they did his birthday celebration. (Though they still competed at the same time.

It feels like everybody wants Ichika to pick a girl (some believe he already has) but really this story doesnt need romance what it needs is actual plot progession because lets face it the anime's weakness is that the second season got us to vol 8 but they had kanzashi and tatenashi and now madoka but we have very little. its amazing how i show gives us harem hijinks but there's really no lead girl

More like he gave us a candy coated drug and as it turns out we got more addicted to the candy coating than the actual drug.

The problem is this. We have houki Cecelia Rin Laura charlotte Tatenashi and kanzashi (not even adding Chifuyu or Ms Yamada) as romantic options. Yet to this point there's zero indication of a leader in the clubhouse in fact there's no indication he's interested in any of them. That being said the storyline is utterly horrific and most of that is related to the fact that it feels like this is one of those stories where you tried something new and made it a little too intricate and now you cant resolve the storyline.

When I say we got addicted to the candy coating over the drug itself, I mean we frikkin' love the world he built up and the massive potential of the girls he set-up. We just hate the execution of the story, build-up and non-existent progression of everything.

a few of the shows this season have that problem.

jes, & the fact that the author won't give us a detailed reason why ichika, the only guy that can pilot an IS unit (plus he's an idiot, unmanly & cannot fight his own battles)

Didn't Vol3/4 outright said 'Tabane happened'? Fake the initial reaction, and then design a IS specifically worked for Ichika.
