Ignoring the whole zero-g skirt physics part, the discussion of fanservice, the lack of, or whether it is is or isn't 'old skool' made me realize something...
Marika is 100% fanservice for me. How she looks, how she is voiced, and how she acts and is written, it hits all the right buttons. The character design, the coloring, just the right amount of innocent cute and beauty, yet with a strong enough personality and presence to command attention when required. Most importantly, that incredible awesome spiky hair. Aesthetics aside, Marika's biggest Coyote-service point by far has be her ability to be decisive, make logical decisions, and have the willpower to see those decisions through. I can't describe how refreshing this is. Anime in general, (well over-generalized) seems to go out of its way to have characters be either 1: indecisive or 2: make pants on head stupid decisions at any opportunity. #1 and #2 are fine every now and then, but not all the friggin time. (Unless its Milky Holmes, then #2 is Modus operandi, and I'm ok with that.) Marika's Coyote-service brings to mind a manga series that I absolutely adore. "Maoyuu Maou Yuusha" specifically this one. If you haven't read it, do so, it's one of the rare stories that doesn't insult your intelligence reading. Don't get me wrong, Marika has a long way to go, in several areas, before she can compete with The Demon Queen. The characters themselves aren't all that similar, but where I see the see similarities is how they are portrayed. In their area of expertise, (Marika: Tactics DQ: Absolute command of knowledge, science, economics and Useless Meat) they are very strong, they are both backed by a powerful ally (Marika: Bentenmaru DQ: Hero and Co., mainly Hero who is just BROKEN) and the Author uses the area of expertise to move the story forward in a logical, enjoyable way. Marika makes correct decisions? Oh noes, there was no wailing and emo that she screwed up, that she isn't measuring up to her mother, where's the angst! where's the drama?! No one died! Where's the CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT? Screw that, I've seen that before, very recently, so many times. Show me a good space opera with spaceships chasing ghost ships with technobabble, and tactical though not seen since ... well since a long while ago. This is the approach I associate with 'old school' storytelling. Light on the emo, fulfilling on the characters, strong on the story, heavy on the entertainment. Spoiler for Off on an overgeneralized tangent:

Jenny: Luke (ok, so there would be a female Luke, so what? ) Gruier: Leia Kane McDougal: Obi-wan Kenobi Schnitzer: C3-PO (he would't fit too well as R2-D2 XD) Hyakamune: Chewie (best fit looks-wise )

~Chiaki meets Gruier~
Chiaki: "Hello, what have we here?" ~takes Gruier's hand~ Gruier: "Gruier" Chiaki: "You look absolutely beautiful. You truly belong here with us among the stars." Gruier: "Thank you." ~Marika steps in and takes Gruiers' hand away from Chiaki, and leads Gruier away~ Marika to Chiaki: "Ok, ok, you old smoothie!" ~The three of them turn towards the docking entrance, leaving the Bentenmaru on the landing platform~ Endless "It could happen" Soul

Jenny is not Captain "Earl Grey Hot" Jean-Luc Picard. She's Benjamin Sisko, the only Starfleet Captain to ever have punched Q. Although if Jenny were Picard, then Lynn would have to be someone like Vash, Lwaxana Troi or Beverly Crusher. Lynn would probably be Miles O'Brien. And Schnitzer would be Worf(OK this is way too fun). |

I'm guessing Talbot.
Though there starship classification system seems off. All three Imperial ship types are listed as Battleships. (well I can't actually read the Jabberwocky's classification, but she is bigger than the other two ships). The Talbot being just a little bigger than a Corback. Though the Talbot look to have three to four times the guns of a Corback. The Jabberwocky would look to have twice that even, but it is hard to tell (and it might have only smaller guns, but lots of them). It could even be a carrier for all we know. I don't think they would hold up under the fire of the Wave Motion Gun. The three known (active) pirate ships are seem rather similar in appearance. Bentenmaru, Barbarossa, and Lighting 11 are have the same general line, engine style, and other such things. I wonder if the Lightning 11 was a Privateer as well. The Yacht Club's ship, the Oddette II, is of a very different design style. It is supposely older than the other surviving pirate ships. Wonder what she was before the war. She seems to have a rotating section for low gravity, but is otherwise a zero-G ship. Looks like a liner, but doesn't have enough windows for tourists (those might have been plated over for the war). Judging by the radar and EW package, she seems like a Command Ship. That or she was heavily armed in her day. But then she's a solar sailer that has engines as well....but she doesn't seem FTL capable (or maybe she is?) So many questions in the starships department.
