Perhaps by means of some powerful drug, the Arume are endowed with genes that allow them to interbreed with humans. But they have already lost the male sex, and use nanomachines to enable them to fertilize their eggs. That means that they cannot be made pregnant by human males. On the other hand, their method allows them to impregnate human females.

According to M-theory, the women who call themselves Arume come from a different brane-world from our spacetime. They gained control of gravity and from that developed the ability to leap across dimensions. Emil force was the basis for their control of gravity.

They depend on nanomachines for the entire process of separating genes, fertilization, and implantation of the fertilized egg. Nanomachines are also used for life-extension, body-strengthening, etc. They remain in the body, and have the side-effects of making their eyes bright blue, of affecting the eumelanin dye in their hair, and of making their blood turn milky white when it touches air.

They have subtle control over the ability to shift in spacetime, which allows them to switch between two parallel spacetimes. Continuous shifting allows them to pick out instants that are in neither spacetime, and has the effect of giving them an ultimate ability to hide themselves. The great energies needed for shifting come from the emul force drive.

Notes: Brane-world cosmology is derived from M-theory, and sees this and any other universe as analogous to membranes in a larger multiverse. Eumelanin is the kind of melanin that gives hair a yellow, brown or black color, depending on how much of it one has.

I do not think that I can translate that any better than you have already done... yeah, also with the brane-world which I really find interesting... It means the Arumes might just also be earthlings just from another universe? Sounds pretty interesting...

Well it's nice to get an explanation for it - but a lot of people won't know about this information if they don't come across the website pages, or the kind translations. They should really try to insert this reason into the anime itself - otherwise a lot of viewers will continue to think it's an unintentional error.

In general though, this is a lot of really interesting background to the Arume; it's a shame the anime isn't longer, because so much of this won't be given much attention, if any. Hello 'sequel' I guess.

isnt the line longer there with something like "As a result [of the nanomachines], they can not become pregnant by human males. Thats why they get Earth women pregnant.[... 逆に彼女たちのやり方で地球人女性を妊娠させられる。]"? (go ask your friendly japanes translators

I cant remember past arguments over earth men and Arume nor manga, but does that mean Arume is here to get earth women pregnant with theyr babys not get themselves pregnant with earth men help ?
As someone translated earlyer...Arume can't get pregnant, so yeah thats the case, i always thought otherwise tho. No wonder theres so many who want to kill men, they are useless. And so many who go with women.

As someone translated earlyer...Arume can't get pregnant, so yeah thats the case, i always thought otherwise tho. No wonder theres so many who want to kill men, they are useless and so many who go with women.

Yup, that's what i got out of it, too.

Nothing states that they can't get pregnant by each other... just that they cannot conceive male offspring. Whether or not they can isn't clear.

No, they can get pregnant!

Anyway, this is Kaoru Chujo's translation of the whole paragraph, and I think it's pretty accurate:

Perhaps by means of some powerful drug, the Arume are endowed with genes that allow them to interbreed with humans. But they have already lost the male sex, and use nanomachines to enable them to fertilize their eggs. That means that they cannot be made pregnant by human males. On the other hand, their method allows them to impregnate human females.

This basically means Arume can be made pregnant by their own women, and can also impregnate human females. But human males cannot impregnate Arume.

This makes sense if you think about it. Their men died, so they created the nanomachines to allow femaleXfemale breeding, but the possibility of maleXfemale disappeared in the process. With this "powerful drug" they can include our women into the equation, but our men are already out of the question because of the nanomachines.

The trick is that the nanomachines have entirely replaced their reproductive system.

EDIT: and of course, they cannot conceive male offspring. But this is a natural problem, the reason their men died in the first place, and something that not even the nanomachines could fix.

Well looks the war is coming and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it. The past 2 episodes were great with lots of things being reveled. I never suspected that BLUE was a test ship for that kind of experiement. It just makes the whole thing even sadder. Well from what i have been told the war is pretty much an ass kicking on the human race. I feel sorry for all the males in that world things are going to get nasty.


After this over could it be possible we are going to see a 2nd season set in the future after the war? It would be interesting to see it animated but i dont know if i could stand to watch how much they screwed up earths natural order.

There was something somewhat significant in chapter 11 of Bokura, but remember that the recent manga takes place a millennium before the first one, and earth is still under the complete control of the Arume in the original manga, so nothing that can happen in Bokura will change that.
As for whether humans can ever "recover"... pure-bred humans are still around, so obviously not all women have abandoned the natural use of men even after a thousand years, so I'm not sure there's much recovery to be done as a species. Wresting control of their government from the Arume would be the only thing for them to really do, but the line between humans and Arume has blurred a bit due to mixed breeding. There also doesn't seem to be as much ultra-feminism at that point, as the commander of the unit charged with hunting Yui down is male, meaning that they're free to move up, at least to a certain extent, within the military.
