Even website design is changed;
http://www.madoka-magica.com/ It's like.... 'THE LAST BATTLE MODE'.... ;_; epic. Also, you can see silhouette of wings behind Madoka's back, if you see closely.

Besides, we already knew the last battle is a "Madoka and Homura" only thing, as revealed by Gen himself in a megami article. So a true "last battle" design should only display these two.

C'mon, fanservice never was just sexual thingies like panty shot and the like. Anything that has no relevance to the plot is fanservice. For example, I remember Lain's writer saying Lain's hat was a part of her character design he considered fanservice.

I do feel guilty about watching little girls suffer - inherent in fanservice is the idea of non-fans feeling guilty. Whereas a fan would enjoy a panty shot or exposed midriff, someone new to the program would feel ashamed (or enjoy it, thereby becoming a fan). In the case of Madoka Magica, extending the suffering of little girls for an entire season might be considered by some as fanservice. It appeals specifically to the demographic of repressed otakus who feel schadenfreude at the innocent breaking down both emotionally and physically; Urobuchi himself suggests he is one. Then there also exists the casual viewer, who takes some pleasure in watching little girls despair, but also feels great sympathy for their struggles. These are the people who insist Kyubey is evil because of all the bad stuff he's caused Madoka and company. The closest thing to fanservice for casual viewers are the yuri subtexts between Sayaka and Kyoko, as well as Madoka and Homura. (Mami and Madoka fell through after episode 3.) Unfortunately, there is little eye candy in the way of exposed skin or oversized cheeks, although Mami's mammies are often exaggerated in many Mami fanarts. I guess Madoka is kind of cute... I guess. (Oh, forgot to mention Homura's hair flicking. What fanservice indeed!) Finally, the "intellectual" viewer seeks a consistent, error-free plot. Often, these people try to approach the story with a critical lense, actively seeking out contextual problems. The main source of fanservice for this type of viewer is Kyubey, who spouts all sorts of crap about entropy, fate, destiny, souls, etc. Some people here just love taking apart everything Kyubey has to say and calling him a poorly constructed character. Others oppose the idea of Kyubey as an evil entity by posing a different set of morals. Whatever the case, Kyubey raises up a whole bunch of questions relating to our own world, and the intellectual viewer seeks to answer them. Now why did I just talk about fanservice? (Besides being bored to hell out of my mind.) To show Madoka Magica can appeal to a wide variety of demographics using different types of fanservice. Perhaps most notable of all is the lack of sexual appeal, something very common in today's anime (and most anime in general). Also noted is the lack of Madoka merchandise. I think if Shinbo was really aiming for profits, then he would have directed the show in a more appealing way to the shonen demographic. He would have commissioned the art director to give Homura a more attractive body and asked Urobuchi to give Homura awesome laser beams of death. Instead, the viewers get a show of gloomy, dark, and serious nature. Everything is kept simple and minimalistic to retain a depressing aura about the show. I still think Shaft could have sold a lot of junk the way Madoka is now, but they chose not to exploit their own success for piles of yen. |
