chatzilla is platform independent if you run it as an extension of Mozilla Firefox, but the memory hog issue with Firefox will be a limiting factor.

We can all suggest lots of clients and tell you which ones are the best. But in the end the best one is the one that fulfill your needs. Coz what is the best for us might not the be the best for you. As for me I only use mIRC since it's simple and has all the options I need.

ChatZilla and mIRC are both nice, my top two IRC Clients.

irssi is the best IRC client, no competition.
Runs in a terminal window so you can use with just Screen and a SSH client (just text, no bullshit), huge amount of scripts and is easy to script yourself in Perl, extremely customizable, has the wonderful Recode module so you pretty much can set it to UTF-8 and never worry about charsets again (or set only that japanese channel you're idling in to sjis), well working DCC, highly customizable keybindings... it has all you'd ever ask for in an IRC client and some more.

Also, whoever thought mIRC was the "original" IRC client... uh, IRC predates even Windows 3.1 by several years (it was originally created in 1988 and ran mostly on various Unix systems) so no.

@OP - What do you want to do with the client? For example do you want to download files with it or just chat?

What about weechat? I've been going back and forth between that and irssi and am still trying to decide which one I like better. They look incredibly alike, but weechat has a few nice builtins (like nicklist) and support for more script languages.

Ah well, just try them a bit longer and decide later I guess.

the one im currently using is pretty annoying in that i have to click continue everytime i start it up

well besides that is there anyway i can automatically join all the channels in my favorites?
i like to idle in channels but i hate the process of joining all of them since theres so many...like right now i have click though my whole favorites list manually to join every single channel and my favorites list is long it takes quite a long time

mIRC is just an IRC client so I think you'd probably want an IRC client.

If you know the commands, any IRC client is basically the same deal. I use irssi, but that's just for *nix, I believe. I remember using Leafchat under Windows.

For a quick solution, type:

I strongly suggest you look for help or rundowns on the most useful commands (/server, /join, /msg, /dcc, /nick) which would make the process of using IRC (and of choosing a client) much easier.

I've just formatted my comp, so I've gone with XChat this time around whereas I used to be a mIRC user. I don't see much difference really, just the sounds in mIRC kinda annoy me after using it for so many years. (I never actually looked in the options to turn off the sound)

Note: as always, take the reviews with a grain of salt - people are more prone/eager to complain than compliment, so...well...it's for you to decide whether to believe them or not.

Personally, I use mIRC since it has everything I need, and so far it hasn't let me down (if it ain't broken, don't change it). The only issues I ever encountered with IRC were due to bad router parameters and not the program itself (as I first assumed).
