Planetes, A great series

What were they thinking when they decided to put that annoying ass girl, Tanabe, in the anime?! OMG I can't stand her! The girl is so damn annoying, I wish someone would just cut her cord and let her float off into outer space or fry in the atmosphere! The first episode was pretty funny and I thought it had potential but after episode 1, it was BORING and just plain ANNOYING!

*EDITED* Damn I gotta sit through another 2 episode because I downloaded them in a batch. Gonna annoy myself to death!

Refresh my memory. Which is the annoying one? Is that the clutz at the beginning of the episode? The one that keeps dropping things and is assigned to the junk reclaimation team?

I also am questioning the quality of this anime myself. Not sure if I'm gonna like it. On top of that, what's up with them using a 30 year old ship? Oh sure, our shuttles for the space program are closing on 20 years, but they look tons better than that beat up old rust bucket. It doesn't look space worthy one bit. I'm just waiting for it to fall aprt and become space junk itself.

What annoys me most isn't all this, but the fact that the show gets preachy and acts like it's showing us Deep Themes™ in every annoying episode without bothering to set up interesting enough characters or storylines to justify its (admittedly hallmark greeting-card level) messages. It's slice of life anime -- in space! And they're going to show us the simple, everyday truths of life by showing us ordinary, everyday people going about their everyday lives -- in space!

Engaging storytelling and interesting characters apparently aren't needed anymore. They just need to make them pedestrian and everyday, then we'll relate to them and be enriched. Especially if they set it in space!

...you know, I think I recognize this format before. The last two times it was with aliens! or with magic! instead of in space!, but the basic idea is still UGGG.

Yeah I think that's the one. The really really annoying girl with the short pink/red hair. The anime is suppose to take the realistic approach but nobody in the anime really cares about their own safety or anyone elses. I guess you can only like this anime if you're a space junkie wondering about the future of space.

Thank you. If you hadn't said it, I would have.

Is the sole reason you people are watching this series to complain about it? Personally, I don't understand why everyone finds Tanabe so damn annoying that they feel they must harp on it every single time an episode comes out. If she really turns you off that much, then drop the show and spare us your preaching.

What? As opposed to the upteenth billionth robots--in space! Or whiny teenagers -- in space! Or, wait! How about another "wars are really bad" preach-fest -- in space!

Man, perish the thought that there be an anime series that focuses on realistic people -- in space! I guess the only thing to do about it is constantly complain about the very basis of the show!

Listen, if the show doesn't float your boat, that's fine. But, yeah, it's a show about ordinary people doing a somewhat mundane job. If you don't like it, again, then just do us all a favor and drop it already.

Right on brother. Even though it doesn't have a plot it is still interesting to see how the MAIN characters interact and deal with certain problems. I kinda hope that Tanabe and Hachi get together. Anyways, whats so annoying about Tanabe??? So she has guts...which is more then what you probably have. Dont believe in moral values?? Well got a solution for you, again dont watch it as it wont make sense to you.

i have to agree with the latter response...nobody is forcing you to dl anymore or watch anymore of this series episodes...

i like the way they protray human emotions...sure she might be annoying at times...but they way they did it sure makes it real life like attitude...

it's kinda like a drama series where you get to meet all sorts of people from nice people, ambitious people, annoying people, people who have dreams but are just lazy to make it come true, workers who suck up to their bosses...man you got everything in this show...

:P

I watched two episodes. I quit one third of the way through the 3rd ep. I just couldn't be bothered to sit still with only this anime to keep me occupied. It's so bad on such a fundimental level, it seems like it is blind to how bad it is -- it's that bad.

So I quit and never looked at another episode again.

I'm in the group that is enjoying the series. Tanabe isn't so much annoying as she is naive. She is a young, idealistic woman surrounded by jaded "old hands," in what is considered the bottom rung of the space industry. I find the characters to be interesting because they seem like individuals, and come with realistic human foibles.

It is refreshing to see a show that IS slice of life, rather than the fantastical stories that are more common. I also think it is a nice change of pace to see a space show that doesn't fall back on the oft used "teenagers save the world omg" theme.

If you don't like it, why watch it? It's easy enough to just delete the episodes you haven't watched. Why be masochistic about it?

What's up with the flaming? I'm/We're not forcing anyone to not watch the anime, I'm merely voicing my opinion on the anime along with other people just as you are. That's what a discussion forum is for isn't it? I don't see any "no criticizing an anime" rule so I'll criticize it if I want to. If you don't like it, DONT look/reply in my post! How's that?

Anyways, Tanabe is annoying because she's the kind of person who absolutely has to get her point across no matter what. She's nosey, never shuts up and is just annoying whenever she speaks. Heck even the main character, Hachimaki, would agree with me.

I'm still watching this because I usually give an anime 5 episodes to catch my interest and I'm not completely turned off by this one just yet. It's boring but I hope to see some funny episodes ahead. I found episode 1 to be pretty funny but I haven't seen anything funny since then. So if the anime has some more funny moments and the girl becomes less annoying, I actually might enjoy the anime a little bit more.

Your right it is a discussion forum and I apologize but still it seems to me you dont particularily like the anime at hand, and I dont find that particular character annoying as you seem to portray.Wow she speaks her mind, which might be annoying to you...what female isnt. And no, watch the end of episode four and I DONT think Hachimaki would agree anymore.

I enjoy it too... The ordinary bit is actually why I watch it.

Its quite interesting to see how the "irritating" newcomer will actually influence others with her ideas and her passion for life. The part in ep 3 where Tanabe threatened to throw the space coffin into Earth's atmosphere really touched me. Though she can be noisy annoying, she is an adequate catalyst for the show.

Granted the show has ordinary people doing mundane job, but I haven't really taken time off to look at life and the people around me closely either. This show did made an emphasis and gave me a look at things in different perspective. Its pretty amusing and thought-provoking, at least to me.

I really liked that part also. At first when she went ballistic I was like, "Oh god! Here she goes again with an irrational emotional outburst." Then she started to explain herself. When she talked about how incredible that the coffin would have come back to earth (and what it should mean) she actually had me taking her seriously. A miracle shouldn't be taken lightly. Even though it could have been happenstance, I still have to say, "Wow" when something like that happens.

I'd have to say that Planetes is my favorite new series of the season (although I also like BPS, which a lot of people seem to hate). In the 4th episode, I wanted to do what Tanabe did for the entire episode. Very satisfying.

well but you started to complain about her. oki that's fair enough, but without her in this series then there wouldn't be any point creating this anime. it would just be plain boring and uneventful.

she's just new to the working world. she just doesn't know how the real world works outside her own principles.

she is just naive as someone said, and those sort of people exist in real life as well. i think it makes us realise and stop to think about the people around us as well.

i hope you don't kill yourself as you continue with this series and she continues on with her annoying habit of her rightenousness....heheheheheh

cheers...

I too am looking more and more forward to each new episode of the series...I really don't understand how people can be getting upset at the rookie Tanabe character. She is supposed to shake things up by trying to show what exciting and amazing thing it is to be off our world. I think she's one of the best characters and the I love that we are learning that evidently none of the other main characters are just what they appear to be on the surface (especially Hachimaki who apparently is quite the space-dreamer himself under the defensive rough cool exterior).

I also enjoy a show that isn't teenagers save the world or boy gets 100s of women to embarrass/chase him/live with him/mother him/be servile and clean after him. Boy, the nature of much of the anime coming out of Japan speaks *LOADS* about the strained social dynamics that must be going on between the sexes (of course, watching the shows from here in the US will certainly speak about the problems an oversexualized and undereducated society we have, I mean Governor Arnold of CA? A porn star as a runner-up in the top 10 or so? Sheesh what a disaster!)

Another great thing about this show is the examination of the omnipresent/ultrapervasive corporate culture, especially from the view of the "janitorial" staff who are treated like a hindrence by the rest of the company and yet are most important part as evidently no company can do business in space on this show (makes me think of Wal-Mart which knowingly employed thousands of illegal alien workers for cleaning after hours at most of their stores, treating them like garbage, yet none of us in the US would shop in an unclean store...That's it, the next anime hit WalMartES!).
