Oh, it looks lovely in HD, as expected. But nothing like what it must've been in theaters. Ah, sometimes there are only certain places to view a movie.

Macross: Do You Remember Love?

It's one of the best Japanese animation movies I ever watched.

Great music by Lynn Minmei too. I still have the VCD and music soundtrack I have been keeping for 10 years.

Right? All these years later I'm still impressed by the animation and the artwork, which was done by hand! No CGI here.

Less than a week before the 7/27 release.

SCOOP...slight changes will be made. IMHO it isn't that big of a deal...but others don't think so.

I just download it. The quality is astounding for an 80s movie!

However, I don't notice any of those changes they talked about yet (only at the first 30mins) but maybe they're talking about the colors? Something small like that? I notice that the clothing has been changed a bit on colors. They've added saturation to some reds.

All in all, for the screen size, the quality is amazing. It's on Nyaa if anyone's interested. Be warned, that one is Hi10p; so if your player only does 8bit, use MPC-HC.

Remember that the '80s were the "Bubble Years" for Japan. Pretty much everything looked better then.

As someone who lived in Japan during the 80s, Yot-Chan is absolutely correct.

The 80s, while misguided, was indeed a time of (superficial) prosperity in Japan. Words cannot describe the allure and vitality that existed.

As far as anime is concerned, I would argue it was the golden age of creativity. These days, while shows have better graphics, are mostly rehash of old ideas...

Of course, Japan was also disgustingly arrogant then.

The best 2D animations ever done in history were all done by hand, traditional hand drawn animation carries a special quality that comes off with the amount of hard work and commitment needed.

While I agree mostly, 2D just cannot justify Valkyrie dogfights. I am glad ZERO initiated the use of CGI to illustrate Valkyrie dogfights. It was profoundly beautiful.

The moral being: 2D or 3D doesn't matter. If Ichiro Itano is doing the battle choreography, it'll be amazing, no matter what.

I meant the upscale. Usually, for old movies, the upscale to such a large size is horrible. After skimming through the rest of the movie, I can say this is true. The quality drops during some dark scenes. The upscale otherwise is good. But is it just me or is there too much blur to the final scene between Misa and Minmei?

It would be suicide for the animators to draw full 24 - 30 fps for such detailed choreography. When done right with the right budget and effort, 3D will always produce great eye candy.

But clever choreography to save budget and manpower can also produce great scenes, like Max and Millia's duel in the dark. They probably saved a ton of work in that scene but created one of the greatest battles ever.

Like I said, Yot; the upscale is a bit bad. The quality of the actual footage dropped. The grain appears worse due to this. But otherwise than that, the blur is the only problem. At various scenes, there is way too much physical blur. A good example is Minmei and Misa's last moment.

Otherwise, the BD remaster is lovely. The artwork is better at this resolution, truly. Now if they could just get rid of the excess grain...
