I think about the only good part of FMA, in that reguard, is the almost Yuri moments that happen in the very late episods between Dante and Rose.

the anime screwed Winry over, she had a purpose for a while there, but then in the last episodes it all went to hell. She actually has purpose in the manga ^^;;

I don't read the FMA manga.... I am just curious... but what was Winry's role in the manga? why do you manga readers feel that the Winry character was wasted in the anime? ....

She seems to really be there for the brothers emotionally.
More in the manga, than the anime. Especially Ed.
I almost cried during that scene where she made the pie..

I thought she's a hell of a nice character in the manga comic. She turns Ed into pulp when he spoils his mechincal arm, and provides a link into the brothers' past and character in the story.

Just for the record, nothing much happens to her in the anime. Life simply goes on. No tentacle rape. (Did anyone actually believe that?)
