I was actually kind of surprised when Haruhi didn't really freak out when she woke up and Kyon was like..on top of her. It seemed weird that she wouldn't yell at him for that but yell at him for wearing their schools shoes in her house. Well, maybe that's kind of typical of her
I'm also wondering what the present was and why it seemed like she was crying. Was it of happiness or something?

I was also surprised that Haruhi didn't freak out when Kyon was on her bed. It almost seemed like...she didn't mind it but knew it was wrong and thus got up and made him put the cover on his head. Yeah, that'll be an interesting scene to see in the anime. A lesser "tsundere" would have punched him in the face, but Haruhi's a better written character than that XD

Yeah, I kind of got the vibe that she wasn't objective towards it or maybe she was like incredibly surprised (I mean, who wouldn't be surprised if the closest guy to you was on top of you when you woke up?) and didn't want to make a scene because of her parents.
Yeah, she seemed touched. That's a good word to put it. And like Kyon pointed out in Live Alive, she isn't really used to being thanked.

Well, for me, Kyon is attracted to Mikuru physically. But with Haruhi, its much deeper than just physical. For me, when men notice more than the physical looks of a particular person they know, its something special.

In Kyon's case, he sorta likes Haruhi not in the physical way, but when he was falling with her, noticing her smell, her body, her warmth, and the "calming moon" smile he saw when Haruhi was handed the gift, he was mesmorized and dumbstruck. It's like he never noticed it until now. And thats what beautiful about it.

Im not good at deciphering men, though. I wonder if any of the guys here will confirm or dismiss it.

That's an excellent point. What Kyon mostly notices about Mikuru is strictly physical - her cuteness and beauty. But for Haruhi, he notices all kinds of little subtleties in her mood and personality. When he finally does get physically close to her in the final chapter, he's totally overwhelmed. So basically he's "moe" for Mikuru but his feelings for Haruhi are deeper. For Yuki...I think he mostly likes following her character development and how she's gradually becoming more "human."

Most of the time he was falling he was describing everything about her. It's kind of obvious he has more of a deep connection with Haruhi than Mikuru. "Now there isn't a single doubt that the girl gently breathing with eyes closed in my arms is Haruhi Suzumiya, a name that will continue to be engraved in history even after I die." was a line that kind of hit to me that she's left a very large impression on him. I mean, he's said stuff about it before, but here it kind of was obvious. It's amazing what you can realize right before you die.
It's probably just that annoying fangirl in me that won't die, but it seems to be that he's falling for her...literally and in that romantic way.

Yes, thematically the story does suggest a physical-Asahina-san / more holistic Haruhi (mental and somewhat physical) relationship that is indicative of a deep connection between them. As a guy, I know other guys who have given up the physical aspect entirely for the mental, but sad as it is to say, I can't. Of course, Kyon has acknowledged, and other characters as well, that Haruhi is insanely physically attractive, just that Kyon would never say it outright. XD I suppose it was too serious a scene in tone for a beating, and it would probably have detracted from the focus on the Haruhi-Kyon emotional relationship, hey, Kyon's a perfectly normal teenage boy, and it would have been hilarious if he was caught lying about it.

Or maybe it's just time travel. Maybe time travel imposes on people a deep sense of seriousness and purpose that overrides the animal instinct. Or maybe it was calcium deficiency...

I just pulled out my dog-earred(OK, not quite that yet) copy of Melancholy. On Page 6, he calls her "a striking beauty" after commenting on "perfectly proportioned face" and such. He does call Ryoko a hottie when comparing her to Haruhi (page 13) and of course he ended that comparison with saying that both were out of Taniguchi's league. Although...

He seem to unknowingly be attracted to psycho alien girls. I mean, Kuyoh was the girl he had plans with at the beginning of Disappearance and we all know about Taniguchi's AA ranking of Ryoko

And yes, I have to restrain my urges to fanboy over what I have been able to read so far of Surprise.

Maybe he has something like Nakagawa...or whatever his name was in novel..6..I believe, when Nakagawa was in love with Yuki because he could sense her powers..you know what, I don't remember what it was. But it had something to do with her alien-ness and him being a half esper or however they explained it, maybe Taniguchi is the same.

Spoiler for Gravity, Trusts and the Haruhi-Kyon Relationship:

It was said in Day of Sagittarius by a certain esper that the Haruhi-Kyon relationship was based on trust[*1]. In Surprise Part 2, last chapter, we have a situation where Kyon puts complete trust in the sleeping Haruhi by jumping out the window to catch her, with nothing but the hope that Haruhi or the world [*2] will do something to stop the two of them from hitting the ground messily. In other words, it's the ultimate test of Kyon's faith in Haruhi [*3]. And he passed it. He jumped without thinking. My belief is that it is the ultimate realization of this mutual trust and confidence that fills the empty hole in Haruhi's life, turning the her hope and frustrations as embodied by the Shimjins into her hope and longing, hence the friendly Celestial. College-Haruhi is a way of showing us what SOS-dan, in particular Kyon, has been fighting for all along - a happy girl with the same confident, beautiful, but gentler smile.

That said, my thoughts do not account for Yasumi or the Humanoido Interfaces' role in this. Nevertheless, it is a seminal moment in the Haruhi-Kyon relationship and fitting climax for this storyline that puts the Haruhi-Kyon (not nessasarily the ship, but the human relationship) back in the forefront.

[1] In that instance, Kyon's trust that Haruhi won't destroy the world from losing the game and Haruhi's trust that Kyon will lead them to victory. That said, this really something that is more implied from conduct by Kozumi.

Remember the movie of the Adventures of Mikuru Ashahina? Well, remember Itsuki had to pick either Mikuru or Yuki, because they were a key to his powers and it was very important which one he chose? Well, doesnt that sound like the plot for the Surprise book? Kyon either chooses Haruhi or Sasaki and he is the key to their powers (in a sense). I feel, looking back now, Haruhi was foreshadowing the important descision to Kyon.

Incidentally, the same thing happened in Disappearance, where Kyon had to pick between Haruhi and Yuki; then, as now, he was the "key to their power." If he chose Haruhi, she got her power back. If he chose Yuki, he would be allowing her to use her own power to the extreme that she did.

This isn't an application of foreshadowing; it's a limited idea set. Granted, the author manages to change things up here and there, but the core idea really is the same.

That's actually a pretty good analysis of that scene in Volume 11. I was also thinking about what Koizumi had said in Day of the Sagittarius and how it would apply there.

what happened to her other "me"? seeing that there was another her from the alfa world, wouldn't that mean that she had to fuse like the rest thus sharing the memories from both worlds? I think that this event might led to the result of Haruhi discovering her powers leading to the collage-version that Kyon encounter

Thats what I suspect too. *le sigh* I wish the Epilogue was translated already so we could know.
