Am I the only one who has a problem with Asuna's sword? It doesn't look very rapier-like to me. Barely thinner than Kirito's.

probably due to the artist not knowing what a rapier looks like.

There are different thicknesses to rapier blades. See here:

The particularly thick one seems about the same size range as Asuna's blade.

Aye, the term rapier itself refers to a pool of different sword designs that falls under certain functional criteria, there's not really any limit on the thickness of the blade beyond what is dictated by the function.

Hard to judge dimensions like that, but Asuna's still looks wider. (Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "thin".)

I'm also bothered by the length of the hilt and the lack of protection for the knuckles.

I suppose it depends on what (official) art you look at. If you look at this piece, then yes, it is. But if you were to look at this piece, then no, it's about the same. *shrug*

The length of hilt looks fine to me, and the knuckle protection is there; it just isn't as.. protective as it could be, I guess?

Depends on how NSFW it is. If it shows nipples or intercourse, then no, it's forbidden by the rules. Otherwise, just make sure to point out that the picture is NSFW when posting it.

the width of the blade isn't really that bad, it's still a long, thin, flat blade that's designed for thrusting. The hilt i chalk up to anime design logic

I realize it's not any kind of deal breaker. It just bothers me a bit.

Yeah, but in all the art where the sword is shown prominently, from up close... it's wide. In the rest... who knows what's an effect of perspective or whatever?

There's a cup. But nothing that extends to the pommel.

Yeah, possibly. Looking at the last scene in the OP (the one with Kirito's sword and Asuna's rapier), it's still hard to say..

I'll admit that I'm no expert when it comes to swords, but must a rapier have protection that extends to the pommel, or is it just a matter of design and preference? Maybe abec thought it was unnecessary. *shrug*

Asuna is in MMORPG and Asian one at that ^^"
As long as the stat of said equipment is good you will use it.
I blame Game Designer not knowing what a rapier looks like.

It's not absolutely necessary, but most of them had them.

When it comes down to it, a rapier is mainly a thrusting weapon, even if it can cut. Asuna's looks like it's a slashing weapon that has a point.

Ah, I see.

Well, if I didn't know better, I would've thought it was a normal (slashing) sword.

I know. It's from Versus; a crossover between AW and SAO. Both characters are the same age they are in the anime, meaning Kirito isn't 40. ;p
