Congrats to Shinsekai Yori! I'm overall satisfied with the results (damn Kaiki was so close to win ).
I'm kinda surprised there's a lot of abstention for OVA & movie categories. Thanks to the organisers. It was the first time I voted thanks to the online helper which was really helpful.

What Hxh lost and PA Works was allowed to win something? (And Kyoani didn't, tehe) Unacceptable.
But Shin Sekai is really good, and that's a pretty lol image of Kazusa we have there. Maybe I should get around to finishing Chihayafuru too. The series was great though I sorta got bored during season 2. As a drama though; I never really thought of it like that though.

Some things that might interest you are that the super natural elements go a little beyond just the whole "underwater people" and you have gods and godly manifestations, and if that doesn't meet your fancy there's also: Spoiler for Nagi no Asukara semi-major spoiler / this may spoil the fun so open at your own risk:

I find Chihayafuru S2 beating LB: Refrain to be disappointing. Not that it was bad, I still enjoyed it quite a bit, but this part of the manga material that was adapted wasn't especially good. In fact, parts of it were down right right aggravating. This season also did little to differentiate itself from season 1 and too much of the character drama took a back seat for just pure shounen sports style action.
The other big disappointment is Hunter x Hunter being beat by Nagi no Asakura. This is just a result of people not having actually watched the former IMO. For me Hunter is clearly leagues above NnA. No debate. Oh and I almost forgot but Shingeki best sound track? Please. I don't know what's happened to Sawano post Exorcist-Unicorn, but his sound tracks are a complete mess nowadays. Too many vocal songs and too repetitive. For me this category should have gone to Tempest. Most lovely soundtrack this year.

UGH, I was hoping me realizing too late that I forgot to vote wouldn't make a difference and it didn't besides one category really . (I noticed about 6 hrs late...)
While I am generally happy with all the other results, but seeing Chihayafuru S2 beat Little Busters from Drama by 1 vote makes me hate myself .

It's unfortunate that Hunter x Hunter lost out but I don't mind Nagi no Asukara winning. It was (somewhat) difficult for me to decide between the two. Still nowhere near the peak of 132 for the 2011 awards.

But in terms of personal prefs I both generally and specifically in this case like things like Nagi no Asukara more. Quote:
I personally liked it quite a bit. ^^ Quote:
Agreed! It really is a good series imo and well worth watching....

Madoka Magica vs. Steins;Gate really drove those awards. Madoka Magica did a bit better overall, but Steins;Gate took home both Male and Female Lead, IIRC. So it was actually a pretty good strong competition between the two shows (and other strong shows like Mawaru Penguin Drum, and Tiger and Bunny, helped that year, like Kirarakim said).
If Shinsekai Yori had a show to be the Steins;Gate to its Madoka Magica, then I think the vote totals would have been higher. As much as I liked Psycho-Pass, it clearly didn't reach those Steins;Gate levels for most viewers, so it only won in the most obvious category - Sci-Fi.

While I'm happy to see Shinsekai Yori get some recognition I fear it has gone complete to the other extreme and has gotten way too much recognition. That alternate voting system is sounding pretty darn interesting right about now.
I also find that Little Witch Academia got an slightly unfair boost due to it's shorter runtime. Yamato is a very long show while LWA is a short 25 minute ova which means that a lot less commitment is needed to get through the show. Don't get me wrong, I found LWA absolutely charming and completely deserving of recognition, I'm just sad that Yamato didn't even manage to nab the SciFi category (and it is better than Psycho-Pass no matter how much I enjoyed that show). It's also sad that HxH didn't manage to get the ongoing series category. It's an outstanding show that's, imho, redefining what it means to animate a long running shounen. The consistency of the quality in all aspects is absolutely breathtaking. Couple that with some outstanding battles (Gon vs Hisoka comes to mind) and it's truly an injustice that it fell one vote short of the prize. Nagi no Asakura must really pick up after the first episode since many of the trademark Okada annoyances were visible in it. Also Kyousuke loosing for Chamber? Come on! It's Brosuke PS: it's also a shame that the best Tamayura season failed to pick up steam in this forum. But yeah, I'll admit that it isn't a show for everyone (and the first season was a real let down after the OVA).

The instant runoff voting system would work fine if everyone had seen all anime in each category. The absolute number of voters who have seen less than four will still shift the balance to shows with greater exposure. Still I like this option a bit better than the current system as it largely removes the incentive for strategic voting. Alternatively average grades allow for easier abstaining and easier expression of relative quality independent of the number of voters, but opens up a can of worms for abuse. The ANN database already does that and has a far greater sample, so it's not that useful to try that here. |

I'm happy that Shin Sekai Yori won best TV Series (though I personally would have voted for Uchouten Kazuko, had that been possible), best storyline, and best antagonist. I think it should have won best SF instead of best Fantasy (I just can't see it as a fantasy show), and I don't really think it fits too well in the mystery department (although if mystery and horror were still together it would definitely fit - especially the absolutely frightening episode 19). All in all, I'm happy Shin Sekai Yori got the recognition it deserved (even though it got a bit too much credit).
I'm with the people who don't really see how Chihayafuru 2 would win best drama. I can see wanting it to win something, and that was maybe the best category? I just don't remember that much drama, and what there was didn't really work for me. I'd probably have voted for it last (though it might have beaten out Sakurasou, which had more drama, but the drama was often a bit annoying...). I voted for White Album 2, but would have been totally fine with Little Busters winning. I think Hataruka Maou Sama is a worthy winner, and I didn't even nominate it. It was that strong a year for comedy. My top pick (both in nomination and vote) was Watamote, which did well enough. I'd have liked to see Shirokuma Café win, too, and I nominated it, but... who am I kidding. The show never stood a chance. Non Non Biyori is a worthy winner, I think. I'd call it the Renge show (and the banner fully acknowledges this ). It also has some nice scenery shots. Gingitsune did surprisingly well, which makes me happy. I did vote for Hunter X Hunter in best ongoing, though I might easily have voted for Kill la Kill on another day (it started strong, was a bit weak for a while [with downright terrible episode], but made an extremely strong comeback). I really don't think Hunter X Hunter is that good, though. It losing out to Nagi no Asukara isn't nearly as absurd as some people seem to think. For all it does right, it's still a fairly straightforward shounen fighter (and I came close to dropping it a couple of times notably during that rather boring game arc). I do prefer it to Nagi no Asukara, though, and it's just about the only show I stuck with for over a hundred episodes, which counts for something. I'm sort of sad that Uchouten Kazuko (my favourite show since 2011) and Kyousougiga didn't win anything. And I really wish Crime Edge had qualified for visuals (it was generally among my favourite shows of 2013, but in just about every other category it was outdone by something else). I think Gin no Saji may have drawn the short end of the stick; it wasn't eligible as a split cour, but I think people didn't quite grasp that that made it eligible for best ongoing. I personally don't feel the loss, since I ultimately found the first season to be one of the most dull shows I ever finished, but I don't trust that its absence in "best ongoing" reflects what people really feel. (Maybe it does, but I'm not sure.) Some thoughts about a new voting system (summary: I played around with an idea, but I don't think it's easily workable, and none of the alternatives I can think of appeal to me.) |
