When she went "Baka Baka!" the first time it's such a huge contrast to the cold, hostile personality she had beforehand it's a big, and pleasant surprise.

I read a couple volumes of the light novel but the anime of it sure has quite a bit of awesome surprises! I mean seeing Kotori actually dancing made the whole scene so awesome and cute. The way she was dancing so energetically and having fun was dangerous to the heart.

Same thing about Tohka. Hearing her actually speak those lines and with an embarrassed look (and later with a happy smile) is just pure win.

And with Haganai NEXT fresh in everyone's mind, it's not impossible to imagine tsundere Yozora in Tohka.

Lol! But I don't think it would fit Tohka at all. Did you notice how she was all smiling and happily said "Baaka baka" at the end to Shidou. If anything, she's all about the dere than the tsun.

Tohka saying "Baka baka" was cute and unexpected. I like that she can be less serious than what she's shown so far. Makes me like her character a lot more.

I think a harem is going to be forming soon, because it seems like Origami likes Shidou for real, and I think his sister will start getting irritated at seeing Shidou with Tohka together as well. It hasn't been clear whether or not he'll be talking with more beings like Tohka yet, I sort of got the impression that there was more than 1.

For some reason, I feel as if Tohka's sudden change in speech/personality is similar to how Shidou was addressing the different girls when trying to get them to like him. It is as if someone was telling Tohka how to respond, since it seems very unnatural.

That's how she normally is. It's just that everyone up till shidou was trying to kill her without reason or provocation so her earlier cold attitude is understandable. You'd treat someone with suspicion at first too before opening up if everyone else had been shooting at you on sight until then.

It should be obvious why Tohka is so suspicious if you consider her background. She said that she have no memories from before turning up as a Spirit. As everyone else is evacuated when a spirit shows up so is the only people she has ever seen the AST squad, that tries to kill her. Shidou have a rather easy time getting on friendly terms with her as he is the first one to try and talk to her.

No. The last thing this series needs is an unfunny Touhou reference joke.

Speaking of awful, though, according to this, apparently Hideki Shirane scripted just the first episode. Of course, I'm not sure whether this is supposed to be any accurate, but maybe this is why the first episode was rather mediocre as opposed to the second episode, which apparently improved in quality?

Well... the location of where Spirits shows up (and consequently space quakes) is actually random. You don't know where they will show up and as a result, many peole have died like they have said in the beginning of episode 1 where the first event happened 30 years ago which pretty much took out the entire area of Mongolia and China. So they did give you a reason. You just don't know when it shows up and where. The only thing they can do is "predict" when it shows up and gives an emergency alarm so that people could evacuate and hopefully reduce the amount of casualties. So calling them morons is the same as calling the all human morons for building civilization on Earth where mother nature could rip any one of us apart at random from disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornado, flying cows, and stuff lol.
