Just finished. Traumatized after ep23/start of ep24. I'm so glad I could quickly rush to the resolution and not have to wait some weeks for it. I would've been down in the dumps. Man, just like Naru chan I loved that girl to death. I might've cashed out of the series if that situation had not been resolved. Although I still think there's plenty of resolution/fleshing out to be done--good to see ppl talking about future things that are planned.

Also I love that magical piano song during dramatic scenes. I'm new to this thread so excuse any redundancies kudasai. I need a better sig too...this one was hurriedly obtained

I think the production wanted to fill more about asuna's past, that hasn't been filled in the manga. Also, loved the drama, and the music it was so O.O

I think I stick with the manga, the production is evil, killing my favorite character!
To be honest the ending eps looked more like a movie than the series o_o

Anyone manage to snag the US DVD's? I was lucky to have a friend who somehow got the first volume (not sure how he did considering the release date on one ad in NewType Magazine is August 1 - maybe he got connections or something) and well...

The voices are kinda whacked up. Here are just a few of my observations:
-Someone was right to describe Negi's voice as having a "fake British accent." or maybe that was what Welsh sounds like? Also he sounds as if he has a cold (or like an old woman).
-Eva sounds even more "British" than Negi. At least Nekane and Anya are realistically British
-Makie pronounces her name "Mah-key-ay"
-Yue's, Haruna's, and Misa's voices sound quite a bit older than their age, and Yue sounds bit too "ordinary" (not at all with the charm her original Japanese version had)
-Mana's english voice kinda reminds me of the english Urd from Ah My Goddess with a slight cold
-Chao sounds like a natural American
-Nodoka sounds a lot like the english Shinobu (of Love Hina)
-Takahata-sensei sounds kinda geeky; at least Shizuna-sensei has a voice to die for
-all teachers are called "Professor", including Negi (no "sensei" this time)
-and most of all, Asuna is rather loud, bratty, and quite irritating for my taste

Street date was broken - the anime store down the street from me is selling them as well (as well as the chinese bootlegs).

Actually I was more upset about the fact that it seemed like they changed dialogue quite extensively on the English track than the voices (which were weird, but no worse than most dubs).

EDIT: Also, I'm pretty sure Asuna was the same girl who plays Kaname in Full Metal Panic.

Unfortunately most British accents are never done well. Though most people outside of Britain seem to think all British people sound like Londoners, though in reality there's a lot of variation in accents around Britain and Welsh people tend to sound very different from Londoners.

Asuna has always been loud, bratty and irritating. She does have her redeeming moments at times though. Nodoka, Yue...and quite a lot more of the girls in the class are better, though you'd not get as many funny scenes with them.

Yeah you're right. I remember my boss (who's an Irishman and doesn't sound like a Londoner at all) telling me about that, and even demonstrated an example of an England "countryman" accent that was so fast and garbled I could barely make out what he was saying.

At least Asuna's Japanese voice was cuter and "tolerable". Her english voice though, she sounded like she was having PMS or something especially when she was yelling, almost to the point where I just wanted to sock it to her.

Geez, it's not like Negi's as bad as that bonehead Sousuke Sagara now if Negi blew up a shoe locker because he thought an evil mage cursed it...

No he's not, which is why it adds a funny different dynamic - in FMP, Chidori's mostly in the right (Sagara being Sagara), but in Negima, Asuna's mostly in the wrong (Asuna being Asuna).

I just thought it was an interesting casting choice - since anger is a lot of what makes both characters go.

Okay I got a look at the next few episodes of the English Dubbed Negima. Things are really starting to get crazy:

The scene where Negi reads a passage in English and asks Asuna to translate, it was changed to this: Negi reads a Shakesphereian poem, and asks Asuna to DESCRIBE it (eg the poem's structure, rhyming scheme, etc). And lo and behold, Asuna is such an idiot she can barely make anything out of the poem?

The Baka Rangers have a new name - THE GREAT DUMMY FORCE!
Ku Fei doesn't sound like a Chinese at all (apparently she was "Americanized" like Chao, and come to think of it she sounds like the english Natsumi Tsujimoto from You're Under Arrest).
Kaede on the other hand is also quite "ordinary" like Yue (though she also sounds like she has a cold, not to mention another low voice; at least they didn't make her into a Southener).
Speaking of Yue, it seems spitting is a normal remark for her now (the scene where the Baka Rangers are doing after school lessons, and Yue flatly admits to not liking studying).
The scene where Negi pursues Asuna when she runs out of the classroom - when the pass by Natsume, she and her clubmates are practicing FRENCH! (they're counting 1 to 6 in French, but their accent is too American sounding)
Nagi Springfield - now that's a nice deep British voice (his accent sounds like something out of Lord of the Rings).
I'll save the comments about the other girls for next time (with all of them in the bath scene, it's hard to make them out).

The name of the Magic School Negi graduated from is now something like "Ludus Magora" (what in the world is that?), as Asuna noted when the letter from Nekane arrived.
Okay, Chamo took me by surprise - his voice is very gruff (this may be a long shot but I can't help but think "New Yorker")
Sounds like Chachamaru is another bonafide British like her master. Nice voice too.
Oh, and instead of "Bookstore", Nodoka has the monkier "Bookworm".

Spoiler for Episode 6:

For the first time we hear Setsuna speak - very low and deep voice - she has Shizuna-sensei beat! (any diehard fans of Setsuna are probably going to drool over this new voice of hers)
Not much comments on Ako (or the rest of the Sports team), Misora, and Natsume (yet another set of "ordinaries", at least Natsume's, Makie's, and Ako's voices are cute, but judging by Misora's almost boyish voice, the cold is spreading like an epidemic)

Much as a lot of the new voices sound silly, plus there are some outrageous changes in some of the dialogue (like what 4kids is doing), I'm still fired up for this and can't wait for the rest of the series.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to reward them for the first season by buying it.... but I have to say the descriptions of the english dubs above are not helping.... unless I was very drunk... maybe drunk is the ticket.

Sounds like our dubbing buddies still haven't been able to come up with a way to handle the "japanese class practicing English" problem (shades of Azumanga) well.
It might have made more sense if they had chosen a Shakespeare passage with more archaic vocabulary I guess. For some people, Shakespeare is becoming as hard to read as Beowulf in the original Old English.

There are actually well over 30 characters - some of the girls in the class are less important than other recurring characters like Kotaro, Takamichi, etc. Also the characters aren't really introduced in the first chapter of the manga (we still know next to nothing about Zazie, for example). Girls from the class are kind of tiered in importance, some are more important than others. Just because he happens to teach a class does not mean that each girl is a main character. Plenty of them don't really get more than a couple of lines until well into the story.

For those worried about "running up to the manga" .... the anime is *really* not matching the manga per se...... its more like a retelling, refurbish...... I'm not counting on it following the manga all that closely even for the second season. Maybe main events but in different order or slightly repackaged.

Anyway, I hope the new series completely forgets the existance of that previous one. I know I try to... Funi should demand their money back for it... I'm sure the first disk will sell well, maybe disk 2, but past that, not so much...
