It was evening when Vita finally worked up the courage to go ask Nanoha the things she had been mulling over for a day or two. And Vita wasn't the kind of person to mull over anything.

“Um...Nanoha?”

The older looking female raised her eyes up from the novel she was reading. “What's up?” she asked, smiling.

Vita played with her fingers in nervousness. “Uh...F-Fate's out on a mission for a couple of days, huh?”

Nanoha nodded. That sickeningly sweet smile was still on her face.

Vita twitched with annoyance. I shouldn't feel like this! She mentally scolded herself. It's not like I'm going to ask anything weird! “Er...um...I w-was wondering, well, uh,” she blushed as she stumbled over her words, “It's just that I-...I kind of feel maybe just a little bit lonely...and...a-and...”

Nanoha's smile kept growing more cat-like and playful by the second. For a moment of absolute horror it reminded Vita of the expression Hayate had when she wanted to try out her weird outfits on people. “Vita-chan.” Nanoha laughed, “Spit it out already.”

“O-Okay.” Vita gulped. “I w-was wondering if...”

“Yes?”

“Can I sleep with you tonight?!” Vita shouted, covering her face in embarrassment afterwards.

Nanoha's smile softened and she brought up a hand to pet the shorter girl. “Of course you can.”

I...I did it! Vita realized, grinning on the inside. I really did it! She blinked. “Nanoha, you can stop petting me now.”

“Oh! Right.” Nanoha giggled, withdrawing her hand. “Right.”

She's...she's probably going to snuggle with me in bed like a stuffed bear, isn't she? Arg... Vita sighed. What had she gotten herself into?

lol, yeah that helped some. As far as story goes, Fate, Signum know Natsuki form streetracing with their streetbikes, so they do have leather outfits. The two try to get Natsuki to try dirtbikeing, which she does and finds its much diffrent then her street bike.

You know how streetbikers wear the skin tight outfits? (natsuki in anime) The dirtbike outfits are diffrent (Pic of my own dirtbike bike I have, Kawasaki 250 2-stroke, then a pic of the gear the riders wear while... rideing) So this is just an imiging thing so you can picture what she'll look like


EDIT: As i was downstair cooking dinner, ym stove erupted in flames... And it gave me an idea about Agito trying to cook dinner for Rein for an Agito/Rein fic >.>

Nanoha leaned back against the headboard of her bed, pillows around her feet as she frowned at the doorway to their apartment. Something was missing. Vivio was asleep, Fate would be back from work in a few minutes and they'd be able to take their evening meal together. Everything seemed accounted for, the recruits she was training were a little young but definitely not the worst she'd ever encountered. She was exhausted, but she wanted to stay up and see Fate.

It had been nearly three days since their schedules had intercepted with enough time for them to have more than a hurried 'good morning' over a cup of coffee in the morning. Nanoha missed Fate, she missed how their lives had once been a lot less complicated.

She exhaled, blowing air upwards and through her bangs as listlessness took her. She was so tired, all she wanted to do was sleep, but she had to see Fate. She just had to.

This was getting stupid.

They were young officers, mages, so their ranks went up quickly; but they never got to see each other.

They had a child together.

Nanoha ran a hand through her hair, pulling at the tie and loosening it to the point where her long tail of hair was half-way out of it's side-up pony-tail. She missed the days when they were still in middle school, when she and Fate had been able to spend time together almost whenever they felt like it. She knew that life wasn't fair, that bad things happened to good people, but Nanoha knew that she was close to whining.

She just wanted to see Fate.

She flopped forward, her face landing in one of the pillows that she and Vivio had moved around before their nighttime ritual of working their way through the classics. They were on Dickens - a challenge for Nanoha to read as her skill with English and Mid's languages were mostly supported by a translator spell. She was getting better, reading the books really helped to build her vocabulary; and Vivio loved them.

There was a rattle at the door and Nanoha looked up, blowing her bangs out of her eyes as she watched the Fate-shaped silhouette move through the entry way.

"I'm home," Fate's soft voice called and Nanoha smiled.

Now she could feel happy again.

She sat up, pulling a pillow with her as she blinked her eyes, adjusting to the sudden brightness of their apartment as Fate turned on the downstairs lights. "Welcome back," she said, swinging her legs over the side of the bed and feeling around for her slippers. She found one with no problem, but the other proved elusive and Nanoha decided to simply forgo them both.

She padded down the stairs to where Fate was flipping through the day's mail. "I missed you," she said quietly.

Fate looked confused, "I saw you this morning."

Nanoha nodded. This was true, they'd spent a pleasant ten minutes together that morning after Raising Heart had decided that Nanoha needed to get out of bed. Fate had followed her into the shower and they'd enjoyed each other for a few minutes before Raising Heart started to beep again and Nanoha knew that she was going to be late for her first training session of the day.

She sighed, walking over to Fate and resting her cheek on Fate's shoulder. "I miss being able to have dinner together, and to read to Vivio together," Nanoha muttered into the the black fabric of Fate's uniform. "We've got to work less hours. Vivio misses you almost as much as I do."

Fate patted Nanoha on the back of the head, her fingers slipping through Nanoha's mostly undone hair. "We'll do better, Nanoha, I promise."

Awesome Angst, (can i get a patent on that saying?) any chance of a second chapter of fluffy angst? *puppy dog pout*

Been writing and editing allllllllllll day since I woke up, the only real break I took was to cook myself dinner. *big yawn* Tho for some reason, I'm able to write more when I'm rreally tired, but the grammar sucks and so does the spelling, which causes me to go "wtf was I trying to do last night o__O"

Lol. That happens to me all the time. Especially when writing papers. I'll fall asleep wake the next morning. I'm like wth was I writing? and omg this is due today!

At exactly five past twelve on Saturday afternoon, Fate Testarossa poked wearily at her food for the fourth time.

Signum sat across from her, silently contemplating the oddness of the situation. Fate had contacted her an hour earlier to ask if they could have lunch, but instead of their usual routine of stopping at the nearest casual restaurant they had somehow ended up in the park. On a picnic blanket.

And instead of their usual conversation, the younger girl was staring, seemingly transfixed by her food. Her hair was down today, which was out of place considering the summer heat, and tied by the habitual black ribbon.

After three or so minutes of silence, Signum decided enough was enough and ventured forward with a word.

“Not hungry?”

Fate started, having almost forgotten about the need for conversation due to the voices in her head. Voice the 1st was Arisa, who had insisted on Fate wearing a small communication device in her ear so she could give ‘interrogation pointers’. The second was Nanoha, who was radiating amusement even over their current mental link but trying admirably to hide it.

“A-ah, yes, sorry.”

She half-heartedly impaled a piece of meat with her chopsticks, then dropped it back to her plate with a barely audible sigh.

“I- I was wondering, Signum…”

The knight looked back at her questioningly, and she cursed the situation. “That, um…are…”

‘Get on with it already!’ Arisa’s voice buzzed in her ear. ‘It’s too hot to be wearing camouflage gear!’

Good, then let’s all go home, she thought but didn’t say for fear Signum would think she was losing her mind. She fought the urge to make sure her hair was covering the earpiece, instead prodding her unresisting lunch.

Signum blinked. Number five.

‘Fate-chaaaan…’ Nanoha whined, almost making her yelp. ‘I know it’s hard, but could you maybe hurry? It’s really uncomfortable in here…’

Fate chanced a glance at the nearby clump of bushes. She had to hand it to Arisa- that camouflage gear was certainly effective. The only thing stopping her from envying Nanoha her easier job of surveillance was the almost oppressive heat.

“Do you- are you-”

‘IS SHE PART OF HAYATE’S HAREM!? ASK HER!’ came through the earpiece so loudly she winced. She could hear Nanoha apologising profusely, but it didn’t make her feel much better.

Signum was growing increasingly uncomfortable, not to mention worried about Fate’s health. Could the heat be getting to her head?

“This, um…sounds strange, but- no, I am not going to say it like that! Ah, n-no, I mean-”

The Velkan eyed her as if she’d grown a second head. “Testarossa…?”

She can’t be in trouble, can she? No, she wouldn’t come to me… That was an oddly disappointing thought.

Fate clenched her fists, resolved to get the sentence out if it killed her. “P-People…were wondering, if- rather, what…goes on, in your- Hayate’s house-”

Was it just her, or did Signum look awfully apprehensive…?

‘Move the picnic basket to the left, please, Fate-chan. Arisa thinks we don’t have a good enough view of her face.’

And that was Suzuka. Wisely deciding not to question the apparent need for a surveillance camera, she nudged the basket to the right with the side of her hand.

“There’s been some speculation- wild speculation, and, well, would-”

She was certain her face would catch fire if it grew any redder. She steeled herself, finally blurting out: “Does Hayate have a harem?”

The next few seconds, it seemed to her, were impossibly long, and she waited in agonised tension until Signum spoke.

“What put such an idea in your head?”

An almost overpowering relief flooded her, so much so that she was almost taken aback.

“Then…you aren’t…”

The blue eyes looking back at her seemed to hide quiet amusement. “I can say truthfully, Hayate does not have a harem.”

There now, that wasn’t so terrible.

‘Good job, Fate-chan!’

Fate exhaled.

‘Thanks, Nanoha. You should probably wait a while before you try coming out of the bushes-'

“Testarossa…”

Getting a sudden feeling of foreboding from the tone of Signum’s voice, she looked up slowly.

“Is there a monitoring device in the basket?”

The honorific was only added in times of stern lecture, and knowing this, she despaired.

“You’re friends with that tall, imposing member of Hayate’s harem, right?”

“Signum is not- Hayate doesn’t have a-” She trailed off under Arisa’s raised eyebrow. “Yes, I am.”

The manic glint in Arisa’s eyes was doing nothing to alleviate her unease. Half a minute passed in wary silence, during which time she looked to Nanoha and Suzuka for help and was met with a wink and a half-shake of the head, respectively.

Traitors.

Suddenly, the not-calm was broken by Arisa’s excited voice. “I’ve got it! My brilliant master plan destined to reveal all!” She paused, then: “Fate!”

The girl in question flinched, already knowing it was too late to run. “Yes…?”

“You’re going to invite Signum to the park for lunch.”

I am…?

As if reading her thoughts, Arisa nodded. “And then you’re going to grill her. Subtly.”

Grill…Signum… ‘Excuse me, but if there any truth to you and the others secretly being Hayate’s harem?’

Fate flinched, shocked into silence by this new, Herculean task.

“Nanoha!”

“Y-Yes?”

The girl was looking to her for help now, but she simply smirked and raised an eyebrow.

Karma, Nanoha. Karma.

“You’re going to set up a surveillance system in the bushes.”

“I- um, that-”

“Good. Suzuka, you’re with me. We’re getting camouflage gear.”

Fate watched in stunned silence as Suzuka was dragged off, giving her and Nanoha a last, apologetic glance before disappearing around the corner. Too winded to begin contemplating why Arisa and Suzuka would have camouflage gear in the first place, she swayed on her feet for a moment before feeling Nanoha’s hand envelop hers. Looking up, she met wonderful, impish blue that was almost enough to make her forget the problems ahead. Almost.

“It’s not so bad, right, Fate-chan?”

“…I suppose.”

“Nyahaha… It could be worse?”

Fate was about to ask how, but suddenly a vision of having to ‘subtly grill’ Vita flashed through her mind.

“…You’re right, Nanoha. It could be worse.”

Gripping the other girl’s hand more tightly before releasing it, she resolved to call Signum and get this over with.

Let the operation begin.

At exactly five past twelve on Saturday afternoon, Fate Testarossa poked wearily at her food for the fourth time.

Signum sat across from her, silently contemplating the oddness of the situation. Fate had contacted her an hour earlier to ask if they could have lunch, but instead of their usual routine of stopping at the nearest casual restaurant they had somehow ended up in the park. On a picnic blanket.

And instead of their usual conversation, the younger girl was staring, seemingly transfixed by her food. Her hair was down today, which was out of place considering the summer heat, and tied by the habitual black ribbon.

After three or so minutes of silence, Signum decided enough was enough and ventured forward with a word.

“Not hungry?”

Fate started, having almost forgotten about the need for conversation due to the voices in her head. Voice the 1st was Arisa, who had insisted on Fate wearing a small communication device in her ear so she could give ‘interrogation pointers’. The second was Nanoha, who was radiating amusement even over their current mental link but trying admirably to hide it.

“A-ah, yes, sorry.”

She half-heartedly impaled a piece of meat with her chopsticks, then dropped it back to her plate with a barely audible sigh.

“I- I was wondering, Signum…”

The knight looked back at her questioningly, and she cursed the situation. “That, um…are…”

‘Get on with it already!’ Arisa’s voice buzzed in her ear. ‘It’s too hot to be wearing camouflage gear!’

Good, then let’s all go home, she thought but didn’t say for fear Signum would think she was losing her mind. She fought the urge to make sure her hair was covering the earpiece, instead prodding her unresisting lunch.

Signum blinked. Number five.

‘Fate-chaaaan…’ Nanoha whined, almost making her yelp. ‘I know it’s hard, but could you maybe hurry? It’s really uncomfortable in here…’

Fate chanced a glance at the nearby clump of bushes. She had to hand it to Arisa- that camouflage gear was certainly effective. The only thing stopping her from envying Nanoha her easier job of surveillance was the almost oppressive heat.

“Do you- are you-”

‘IS SHE PART OF HAYATE’S HAREM!? ASK HER!’ came through the earpiece so loudly she winced. She could hear Nanoha apologising profusely, but it didn’t make her feel much better.

Signum was growing increasingly uncomfortable, not to mention worried about Fate’s health. Could the heat be getting to her head?

“This, um…sounds strange, but- no, I am not going to say it like that! Ah, n-no, I mean-”

The Velkan eyed her as if she’d grown a second head. “Testarossa…?”

She can’t be in trouble, can she? No, she wouldn’t come to me… That was an oddly disappointing thought.

Fate clenched her fists, resolved to get the sentence out if it killed her. “P-People…were wondering, if- rather, what…goes on, in your- Hayate’s house-”

Was it just her, or did Signum look awfully apprehensive…?

‘Move the picnic basket to the left, please, Fate-chan. Arisa thinks we don’t have a good enough view of her face.’

And that was Suzuka. Wisely deciding not to question the apparent need for a surveillance camera, she nudged the basket to the right with the side of her hand.

“There’s been some speculation- wild speculation, and, well, would-”

She was certain her face would catch fire if it grew any redder. She steeled herself, finally blurting out: “Does Hayate have a harem?”

The next few seconds, it seemed to her, were impossibly long, and she waited in agonised tension until Signum spoke.

“What put such an idea in your head?”

An almost overpowering relief flooded her, so much so that she was almost taken aback.

“Then…you aren’t…”

The blue eyes looking back at her seemed to hide quiet amusement. “I can say truthfully, Hayate does not have a harem.”

There now, that wasn’t so terrible.

‘Good job, Fate-chan!’

Fate exhaled.

‘Thanks, Nanoha. You should probably wait a while before you try coming out of the bushes-'

“Testarossa…”

Getting a sudden feeling of foreboding from the tone of Signum’s voice, she looked up slowly.

“Is there a monitoring device in the basket?”

The desert planet that Signum Needes stood on howled as wind whipped around her feet. Pink and white Knight Armor thrashed around her legs, and dark sand sunk into the cracks of the metallic boots she wore.

“Vita,” The smaller redhead looked up at the Wolkenritter team leader. “Where are we supposed to meet up with Testarossa and Hayate?” Her eyes looked to the smaller girl for direction.

“Signum, shouldn’t you know all that?” With the Iron Count, Graf Eisen hoisted on her shoulder, Vita turned to look at Signum with an eyebrow arched.

This caused her to fully turn towards the smaller Hammer Knight. “What do you mean? I was told that Rein told you the coordinates for our rendezvous point?” This worried the Sword Knight greatly. Where were Testarossa and Meister Hayate now?

Vita turned to her left and pointed Graf Eisen in the direction. “For now Signum, let’s head in this direction. I’ve been on this planet before… there’s an abandoned facility over this way.” The chibi knight started walking, leaving the Wolkenritter team leader standing there.

“Oi, Signum… what’s wrong with her?” Agito spoke out for the first time in nearly three hours. The pink haired warrior turned to her unison partner and shrugged.

The warrior turned to look at Vita once more and sighed. “I think I know why, Agito.” Signum looked around the area, then back toward Vita, “But I won’t speak of it until I’m positive.” Slowly, the Sword Knight began following the small tracks in the desert’s sand, with the miniature Fire type Unison device close behind.

The heat of the day beat down on Signum and Vita as they crossed the sandy dunes, hot dry winds whipping around them constantly. Agito hovering close behind in the small bit of shade from Vita’s body.

“Vita…” Signum spoke up, wiping her brow from the sweat that had accumulated on her pale skin. “How much further do we need to go?” The heat didn’t bother the Knight nearly as much as it would anyone else, but the heat was still extreme.

The Red Knight stopped walking, making Agito run into the back of her hat and bounce backwards a bit.

“Hey!” Agito flailed her arms around in the air wildly in a way that would make Reinforce Zwei proud, “Watch where you’re going!”

Vita turned and stared at Agito coldly, causing the smaller girl to fly to and perch on Signum’s shoulder. “We’re almost there…” The blank expression on Vita’s face slightly worried Signum.

“Ahh, please, lead on Vita.” Signum’s next to emotionless tone snapped Vita out of her trance like state.

The red head turned back to the north-west and began her slow walk once again, Signum and Agito close behind.

They walked in silence for hours, no one speaking except the world on which they stood. The sun grew lower and the planet’s temperature dropped.

“Vita,” Signum spoke, stopping her pace. “How much longer? Night is going to come upon us soon. We don’t know how cold it will be.” The logic sounded fine, but Vita shrugged it off.

The girls’ face looked up to the orange painted sky, eyes peering into its beauty. “It can get very cold, Signum. We’re almost there, just a few…” Her words were cut off as she reached the tip of the dune. Vita’s eyes widened with shock, and horror, her memories coming back.

Across the valley lay thousands of metallic bodies, claws and scythes all around. Signum had climbed up behind the girl and saw everything that lay there.

“As I had suspected, Vita?” Lavender eyes looked down; the girl in question looked down herself and nodded.

“Mmnn, this is where me and Nanoha were deployed many years ago. Where I had failed to protect her.” The words were said quietly, as if in shame. Small droplets of tears leaked from the blue eyes onto the brown dirt below.

“It is in the past Vita. You did all you could.” Signum began her walk down the sand dune and across the valley of destruction, Agito and Vita in tow.

“Over here!” Vita yelled out to the Wolkenritter leader, who came to her side quickly. “We can enter through here. It’s where Nanoha and I came in back then. We can stay here tonight, and look for Hayate tomorrow.” Her voice was still soft and tenuous.

Vita managed to squeeze her way in through the small hole, but it proved a bit more difficult for the taller leader. “Signum stand back…” Vita called forth Graf Eisen from its storage device and swung the hammer against the steel wall, which gave way quickly. “There,” the word was simple but it managed, Signum stepped into the old facility which held a horrible odor.

“What’s this stench?” Agito whined out as she flew in behind Signum, covering her nose which ended up causing her voice to come out weirdly.

“It’s the old combat Cyborgs that were never used…” The statement caused Agito to go quite quickly. The trio walked through the old building guided only by Vita’s memories.

“Ne~ Fate-chan, weren’t Signum and Vita-chan supposed to arrive here by now?” Hayate walked around the slightly wooded area, as Fate sat in the center of the clearing with small screens floating around her.

“Yes, they where supposed to be here an hour ago. I tried contacting Alto, but I haven’t gotten anything back. For now it seems we’re on our own.” Fate looked up to the brunette as the small screen closed around her.

Rein orbited Hayate’s head like a little moon to a planet, causing her mistress to get slightly dizzy from the motion.

“Calm down Rein, I bet Vita and Signum are ok. Really... who or should I say what in their right mind, would pick a fight with Signum and Vita-chan?” Hayate spoke to the hyper little Unison device trying to calm her, and herself down in the process.

The vibe that something was off wouldn’t shake from either Hayate or Fate.

[Sir, something is heading our direction. It is approaching fast, and appears hostile.] The sound of Bardiche speaking up caused Fate and Hayate to move together. Hayate’s Schwertkreuz and Fate’s Bardiche ready for whatever was coming towards them.

An eerie laugh echoed around them, seemingly coming from everywhere and no where all at the same time. A barrier soon flew into life around the two TSA mages, keeping them form escaping.

I like where this is going. Can't wait

It was evening when Vita finally worked up the courage to go ask Nanoha the things she had been mulling over for a day or two. And Vita wasn't the kind of person to mull over anything.

“Um...Nanoha?”

The older looking female raised her eyes up from the novel she was reading. “What's up?” she asked, smiling.

Vita played with her fingers in nervousness. “Uh...F-Fate's out on a mission for a couple of days, huh?”

Nanoha nodded. That sickeningly sweet smile was still on her face.

Vita twitched with annoyance. I shouldn't feel like this! She mentally scolded herself. It's not like I'm going to ask anything weird! “Er...um...I w-was wondering, well, uh,” she blushed as she stumbled over her words, “It's just that I-...I kind of feel maybe just a little bit lonely...and...a-and...”

Nanoha's smile kept growing more cat-like and playful by the second. For a moment of absolute horror it reminded Vita of the expression Hayate had when she wanted to try out her weird outfits on people. “Vita-chan.” Nanoha laughed, “Spit it out already.”

“O-Okay.” Vita gulped. “I w-was wondering if...”

“Yes?”

“Can I sleep with you tonight?!” Vita shouted, covering her face in embarrassment afterwards.

Nanoha's smile softened and she brought up a hand to pet the shorter girl. “Of course you can.”

I...I did it! Vita realized, grinning on the inside. I really did it! She blinked. “Nanoha, you can stop petting me now.”

“Oh! Right.” Nanoha giggled, withdrawing her hand. “Right.”

She's...she's probably going to snuggle with me in bed like a stuffed bear, isn't she? Arg... Vita sighed. What had she gotten herself into?

Hayate and Yuuno sat together at the restraunt that he always took her to on her birthdays. Yuuno today though was dressed differently then usual.

"Hayate," Yuuno paused and looked at the clock, before nodding to himself and turning back to Hayate. "Today is a special day, isn’t it?"

Hayate nodded at Yuuno's question, wondering what exactly he had meant by the short statement.

"Yes, it is Yuuno, because you're here with me. You're always spending my birthdays with me." A smile ran across the girls lips, causing Yuuno to blush darkly and turn away.

Yuuno had noticed, but Nanoha and Fate were sitting on the other side of the restraunt, and kept taking glances at him and Hayate. The two girl's presences soothed him this night.

Nanoha turned her attention from the small chit chat her and Fate had been conversing in and stared at Yuuno, nodding.

The signal given, Yuuno turned back to his friend, and his current date.

"Hayate, I've got a question to ask you..." The ferrat-changling inhaled deeply before looking directly at the slightly blushing girl.

Quickly he stood and walked around the table to the still seated girl, before getting down to one knee.

"Hayate, will you marry me?" The music in the restraunt stopped at that moment, no one spoke as Hayate looked down into Yuuno's emerald colored eyes.

Her breath was stolen from her and her mind raced from his sudden question. The girl looked upward quickly when she heard a cough. Signum, Vita and Shamal stared back at her, and behind them Fate and Nanoha did the same.

At the same time her friends and family nodded together and the brunette's eyes slowly trailed back down to Yuuno's own.

Her mouth strained to work and make the right sounds, but only small little stutters came. She then noticed the smile on the boys lips and knew her mind was made up there.

"Yes. I will marry you, Yuuno."

"Really?" He stated with a happiness that could rival the making of the worlds, and stood, scooping Hayate into his arms as he did.

"I didn't think you would ask me before my thirtieth birthday, Yuuno," The two closed their eyes and kissed each other, the clock on the wall struck midnight, and signaled that Hayate had just turned thirty.

"I thought I would make it suspenseful." He spoke out, before they partook in another kiss. People all around them began clapping for the new happy couple. Signum and Shamal most of all, had small tears leaving their eyes as Rein emerged from her little book bag room asking hat the noise was for.

Nanoha leaned back against the headboard of her bed, pillows around her feet as she frowned at the doorway to their apartment. Something was missing. Vivio was asleep, Fate would be back from work in a few minutes and they'd be able to take their evening meal together. Everything seemed accounted for, the recruits she was training were a little young but definitely not the worst she'd ever encountered. She was exhausted, but she wanted to stay up and see Fate.

It had been nearly three days since their schedules had intercepted with enough time for them to have more than a hurried 'good morning' over a cup of coffee in the morning. Nanoha missed Fate, she missed how their lives had once been a lot less complicated.

She exhaled, blowing air upwards and through her bangs as listlessness took her. She was so tired, all she wanted to do was sleep, but she had to see Fate. She just had to.

This was getting stupid.

They were young officers, mages, so their ranks went up quickly; but they never got to see each other.

They had a child together.

Nanoha ran a hand through her hair, pulling at the tie and loosening it to the point where her long tail of hair was half-way out of it's side-up pony-tail. She missed the days when they were still in middle school, when she and Fate had been able to spend time together almost whenever they felt like it. She knew that life wasn't fair, that bad things happened to good people, but Nanoha knew that she was close to whining.

She just wanted to see Fate.

She flopped forward, her face landing in one of the pillows that she and Vivio had moved around before their nighttime ritual of working their way through the classics. They were on Dickens - a challenge for Nanoha to read as her skill with English and Mid's languages were mostly supported by a translator spell. She was getting better, reading the books really helped to build her vocabulary; and Vivio loved them.

There was a rattle at the door and Nanoha looked up, blowing her bangs out of her eyes as she watched the Fate-shaped silhouette move through the entry way.

"I'm home," Fate's soft voice called and Nanoha smiled.

Now she could feel happy again.

She sat up, pulling a pillow with her as she blinked her eyes, adjusting to the sudden brightness of their apartment as Fate turned on the downstairs lights. "Welcome back," she said, swinging her legs over the side of the bed and feeling around for her slippers. She found one with no problem, but the other proved elusive and Nanoha decided to simply forgo them both.

She padded down the stairs to where Fate was flipping through the day's mail. "I missed you," she said quietly.

Fate looked confused, "I saw you this morning."

Nanoha nodded. This was true, they'd spent a pleasant ten minutes together that morning after Raising Heart had decided that Nanoha needed to get out of bed. Fate had followed her into the shower and they'd enjoyed each other for a few minutes before Raising Heart started to beep again and Nanoha knew that she was going to be late for her first training session of the day.

She sighed, walking over to Fate and resting her cheek on Fate's shoulder. "I miss being able to have dinner together, and to read to Vivio together," Nanoha muttered into the the black fabric of Fate's uniform. "We've got to work less hours. Vivio misses you almost as much as I do."

Fate patted Nanoha on the back of the head, her fingers slipping through Nanoha's mostly undone hair. "We'll do better, Nanoha, I promise."

That was cute. It's like it simulates how it can be IRL. Not that I know but...good job neverthless.

At exactly five past twelve on Saturday afternoon, Fate Testarossa poked wearily at her food for the fourth time.

Signum sat across from her, silently contemplating the oddness of the situation. Fate had contacted her an hour earlier to ask if they could have lunch, but instead of their usual routine of stopping at the nearest casual restaurant they had somehow ended up in the park. On a picnic blanket.

And instead of their usual conversation, the younger girl was staring, seemingly transfixed by her food. Her hair was down today, which was out of place considering the summer heat, and tied by the habitual black ribbon.

After three or so minutes of silence, Signum decided enough was enough and ventured forward with a word.

“Not hungry?”

Fate started, having almost forgotten about the need for conversation due to the voices in her head. Voice the 1st was Arisa, who had insisted on Fate wearing a small communication device in her ear so she could give ‘interrogation pointers’. The second was Nanoha, who was radiating amusement even over their current mental link but trying admirably to hide it.

“A-ah, yes, sorry.”

She half-heartedly impaled a piece of meat with her chopsticks, then dropped it back to her plate with a barely audible sigh.

“I- I was wondering, Signum…”

The knight looked back at her questioningly, and she cursed the situation. “That, um…are…”

‘Get on with it already!’ Arisa’s voice buzzed in her ear. ‘It’s too hot to be wearing camouflage gear!’

Good, then let’s all go home, she thought but didn’t say for fear Signum would think she was losing her mind. She fought the urge to make sure her hair was covering the earpiece, instead prodding her unresisting lunch.

Signum blinked. Number five.

‘Fate-chaaaan…’ Nanoha whined, almost making her yelp. ‘I know it’s hard, but could you maybe hurry? It’s really uncomfortable in here…’

Fate chanced a glance at the nearby clump of bushes. She had to hand it to Arisa- that camouflage gear was certainly effective. The only thing stopping her from envying Nanoha her easier job of surveillance was the almost oppressive heat.

“Do you- are you-”

‘IS SHE PART OF HAYATE’S HAREM!? ASK HER!’ came through the earpiece so loudly she winced. She could hear Nanoha apologising profusely, but it didn’t make her feel much better.

Signum was growing increasingly uncomfortable, not to mention worried about Fate’s health. Could the heat be getting to her head?

“This, um…sounds strange, but- no, I am not going to say it like that! Ah, n-no, I mean-”

The Velkan eyed her as if she’d grown a second head. “Testarossa…?”

She can’t be in trouble, can she? No, she wouldn’t come to me… That was an oddly disappointing thought.

Fate clenched her fists, resolved to get the sentence out if it killed her. “P-People…were wondering, if- rather, what…goes on, in your- Hayate’s house-”

Was it just her, or did Signum look awfully apprehensive…?

‘Move the picnic basket to the left, please, Fate-chan. Arisa thinks we don’t have a good enough view of her face.’

And that was Suzuka. Wisely deciding not to question the apparent need for a surveillance camera, she nudged the basket to the right with the side of her hand.

“There’s been some speculation- wild speculation, and, well, would-”

She was certain her face would catch fire if it grew any redder. She steeled herself, finally blurting out: “Does Hayate have a harem?”

The next few seconds, it seemed to her, were impossibly long, and she waited in agonised tension until Signum spoke.

“What put such an idea in your head?”

An almost overpowering relief flooded her, so much so that she was almost taken aback.

“Then…you aren’t…”

The blue eyes looking back at her seemed to hide quiet amusement. “I can say truthfully, Hayate does not have a harem.”

There now, that wasn’t so terrible.

‘Good job, Fate-chan!’

Fate exhaled.

‘Thanks, Nanoha. You should probably wait a while before you try coming out of the bushes-'

“Testarossa…”

Getting a sudden feeling of foreboding from the tone of Signum’s voice, she looked up slowly.

“Is there a monitoring device in the basket?”

Signum’s breath hits her ear, hot enough to make her shiver and light enough to set all her nerves on end. She half-unconsciously moves her neck further to the side, distantly wondering if her hair is going to end up tangled and keenly aware of the older woman’s hand tracing achingly soft lines on her stomach. The other hand, the right, is currently occupied with holding her wrists against the bed, shaking minutely; whether from nerves or excitement is unclear to her, but driven to distraction as she is by the hand not holding her down the thought seems vastly unimportant.

That teasingly unsteady left hand is following its own path over her abdomen, those strong fingers slowly weaving patterns that could be anything at all, applying just enough pressure to have her on the edge of writhing. And then Signum’s palm is over her breast and she almost forgets to breathe as-

*yawns* That's all, folks. Don't stone me? ^^'' I really have no idea if I can write that presentably at all... *winces* Here's hoping no one's eyes bled.
