Looking for classic anime
Hi, I was hoping I could get some recommendations for classic anime,
not that I am looking for really old anime just something that is considered as 'one-of-thoses-that-every-real-animefan-must-know-about' kind of anime. The series (and movies) I have already seen are: City Hunter (great, but a bit episodic) Cowboy Bebop (same as above) Ghost in the Shell (just great) Gundam (great, but I ignored G-Gundam) Harlock/Galaxy Railways (great) Kimagure Orange Road (great) Kodomo no Omocha (even better) Lupin III (movies are great, episodes are varying in quality) Macross (first series was by far the best) Maison Ikkoku (I think this probably Rumiko TAKAHASHI best work) Neon Genesis Evangelion (the greatest) Patlabor (great in sub tile kind of way) Ranma 1/2 (started great but didn't last) Rurouni Kenshin (pretty good) Tenchi Muyo (pretty good) Touch (great) Vision of Escaflowne (really great) I am really looking for those that are more than 26 episodes, although Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne and Evangelion are only just that but they also have a movie so I let them in. The series I know I have not seen that follow this description are: Dragon Ball (not interested) Initial D Inuyasha Legend of the Galactic Heroes (very interested) Urusei Yatsura Also, without being too nitpicking, I would not consider these Shonen Jump series as classic (a bit to new for that): Hunter X Hunter (great) One Piece (great) Bleach (ok, nothing to write home about) Naruto (first 26 episodes were great, lets leave it at that) So if anyone has recommendation that fits the bill (classic series that are more than 26 episodes) I would be very grateful, as I have seen almost all series that I know of (which may not be much) and need some pointers on where to go next. |

Thanks that is a great suggestion, but unfortunately I have already seen it, but I might watch it again. I should mention it that I have seen most great series after the year 2000, so I am really looking before that time.

Sailor Moon is 200 anime episodes, 18 manga volumes, the live action series. The couple become boyfriend and girlfriend, get married and have a child. Tuxedo Mask is a wonderful character.
Fushigi Yuugi is a great series, the manga is better. Fushigi Yugi is a wonderful series where the couple become boyfriend and girlfriend, get married and have a child. The manga is wonderful. The manga is 18 volumes, the anime only goes up to volume 13. I recommend you read all 18 manga volumes. It is wonderful. The manga is wonderful and longer than the anime. Marmalade Boy is 76 episodes, 8 manga volumes. A great romantic series. Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou (Kare Kano) is another must see series. The manga is 21 volumes, the anime only goes up to volume 7. Mars is a 15 volume manga series that deals with sex, rape, suicide, dating, engagement, livign together and many serious issues. The Devil Does Exist Excellent romance. Wild Act Great romance. High School Debut Romance. Kare First Love is a different series from Kare Kano, it is a great manga series. Peach Girl is a great manga series, the anime cuts everything out and changes all references of sex to kissing. The manga is great, it is 18 volumes. Volumes 1-8 are sold as Peach Girl 1-8, volumes 9-18 are sold as Peach Girl Change Of Heart 1-10. Make sure you get the right volumes, you might get the wrong ones. The series is so realistic. Ayashi no Ceres is a great manga series, but not the anime. The manga is great, but the anime takes out so many scenes and a lot of the storyline. You must only read the manga. Akuma De Sourou Great romance. Happy Hustle High Sweet romance. Last edited by MamoruUsagi; 2010-07-26 at 21:37. |

Slam Dunk - its a sport anime but its still a classic imo.
I personally wouldn't call naruto and Bleach "classic", they are too new. They are just like Pokemon was years back, just mainstream and being bled for all the money they can make...which results in crap. |

To MamoruUsagi:
Yeah I have yet to check out Sailor Moon and Fushigi Yugi, that might be interesting. I have seen Marmalade Boy it was good (similar to KOR). Kare Kano, the anime was a disappointment the way it ended, but if the manga is good then I maybe I should also check it out. I have seen Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, Stellvia Of The Universe and Ayashi no Ceres, all ok. Mars and Kare First Love I haven't heard of before. To FireDetei: Slam Dunk probably is a classic and one more anime that I have to see. Some people would consider pokemon a classic as it had real effect on making anime mainstream and maybe Naruto will to, but they don't have to be great to be considered classic but just wildly recognized. |

Seen them all and liked them. Trigun, Lain and Berserk are not longer than 26 episodes. I have to say that Utena (and Rose of Versailles which Utena borrows alot from) are a real classics. I have also heard that fans of Seikai no Monshou and sequels should check out Legend of Galagtic Heros, so thats why I am intersted in LoGH. |

Okay then perhaps just some anime longer than 26 episodes? I think looking for a "classic" you haven't heard of may be impossible, but you never know I guess.
Hajime no Ippo - a classic Shaman King - mediocre shounen Full Moon wo Sagashite - one of my favorite anime Kaleido Star - great anime Tenshi na Konamaiki - not bad You`re Under Arrest! (1996) - okay Meitantei Conan - if you like the genre... Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne - okay |

Well there quite a number of anime here I haven't seen, Shaman King, Kaleido Star, You`re Under Arrest!, Meitantei Conan and Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne. Thanks for the suggestions. I have seen Future Boy Conan and the JDrama version of You`re Under Arrest! and I thought they were both great shows in there own way. |

As in classic? Don't know too many anime with that deserving label....
Legend of Galactic Heroes - Space. Opera. EPIC. AT. IT'S. BEST. Can I say best anime ever? Slayers Trilogy - I'm not a big fan of Slayers, but as a medieval fantasy anime series, it's pretty much reached a classic standard. Yu-Gi-Oh - Shounen classic with cards. Frankly, this is a love-or-VERY HATE kind of series, but it's pretty in a class of it's own. The kind of anime you don't take seriously and yet bite it in with SOME sense of realism. Mazinger Z/Getter Robo Trilogy - Very old-school and cliche-ish (( This series created the cliches )), but a supreme classic. King of Braves GaoGaiGar - The ultimate definition of a supreme Super Robot series. |

No mention of Twelve Kingdoms yet? Surprising. Therefore I'll mention it.
Twelve Kingdoms. It's awesome. Uh, that's all that really needs saying I think. It's fantasy, it's epic, it's got kickass characters, kickass music, great story, etc. etc.. Just watch it if you haven't already |

Since Touch was mentioned, I'd like to recommend anime like Hiatari Ryoukou which arguably is the best anime made from Adachi content in that it is made up by more cheerful (optimistic) characters that are down to earth and isn't bathetic in the least compared to more heart-wrenching stuff like Touch.

Well, if you liked Cowboy Bebop, the go watch Samurai Champloo, too. I consider it one of those must-see shows.
Slayers recommendation thirded. ;P All three series, but my personal favourite would be the second one (Slayers Next). I'd mention Hellsing, but the manga is much better. I'd check that out instead. |

I personally like SamCham and would gladly declare it as a classic among samurai anime (ep11 alone qualifies it, IMO) ... but it's quite recent and hasn't been established as a classic yet because it hasn't yet withstood the test of time. I'd gladly recommend Shingetsutan Tsukihime as a classic too, but then it is too recent.
But what the hell. Bah.

To Nightengale:
I think you are right about Yu-Gi-Oh, it could be considered a classic, a bit new-ish but defiantly on the same boat as Pokemon and Dragon Ball and I have no interested in watching it. Having seen some of the Mazinger Z/Getter Robo it is obvious when newer shows make a parody of it. Like Godannar you can enjoy it on another level if you have seen the old robot shows. So I would say that if show is so well known that they make a parody of it, it would most likely be a classic. Slayers I have yet to see, but I have seen Lost Universe and some people describe it as a space version of Slayers. King of Braves GaoGaiGar have not seen it but I will now, according to wikipedia it takes place in the same universe as Betterman, which I have seen and is a very respectable show. To Radiosity: Twelve Kingdoms is a great show, shame about the end though. To Kikaifan: Nadesico is a fine show and widely know among western anime fans. Is it a classic? well I don’t know, it’s somewhere at the border probably. To physics223: As for Hiatari Ryoukou I only have the episodes that are available here on Animesuki, but I have seen some of Adachi’s other work like H2, Miyuki (10 episodes) and Touch. And they didn’t disappoint so if Hiatari Ryoukou is as good I will give it a try. Samurai Champloo and Shingetsutan Tsukihime are really too new, I think we need to see how they stand the test of time (atleast 5 to 10 years) not that I didn’t like them because I did, but a classic isn’t necessarily what you like. To LynRee: I have commented on Samurai Champloo and Slayers already above, but Hellsing I think is somewhere on the same line as Nadesico. The Hellsing manga has however been on my read list for a long time but I haven’t gotten around to it yet, maybe I’ll make it my next choice. |
