My weekly dose of Hanasaku, just what I needed.

All predictable of course but that was part of the fun to me,watching everyone overeact about something I knew would be a false alarm.

Of course Ohana doesn't think before she acts, sometimes she makes me think of a Shounen Jump protagonist that got transported from a battle/action anime into a slice of life anime

And that bird!

Quote:
At this rate, it's gonna join the regular cast and I won't mind one bit.
You know, the bird is in the OP and ED along with the rest of the main cast

Overall, very standard episode with no real surprises (in fact, the ending was known within the first 4 or so minutes). But, solid character development for Minko and Ohana elevates this to an above-average episode

p.s. Yuina = Great.
Pretty much this, and i gave the episode the same rating as you.

------------

Anyhow, I'm still quite frankly disappointed with the direction of this series. This episode pretty much seals the deal for now that the show isn't what I thought it was from episode 1 and 2 (A more True Tears style), as the episodes of the other type now outnumber those two.

I presume we'll be returning to that tone sometime in the future for the more dramatic moments, but it's still disappointing nonetheless. Ultimately this show will be more successful for it, but I can't help but think we missed out on something that could've been truly wonderful.

Right now, the series has devolved into a relatively standard good quality, porn scenery slice of life dramedy. But that's just it, I didn't want standard good, and I had higher expectations for this.

Honestly, since True Tears, PA works has just not met their true potential. I have high hopes for this studio, so that's why I'm being so overly critical of them.

But oh well, I guess I'll finally settle for something a bit less than what I wanted now.

Me too. I was expecting more development between Minko and Tohru, but it looks like Ohana got it instead. Minko just had that short outburst in the kitchen which was simply brushed aside. Seeing as how I want Minko and Tohru to be together in the end, I am a little sad. I guess I can only hope for more Minko-Tohru moments.

It was quite obvious everything was a big misunderstanding from the start but it was enjoyable nonetheless. Atleast we got some development between Minko and Ohana. And dat bird! I hope the bird becomes a regular throughout the series

I guess my reaction to this ep is like other people's. I liked it quite a bit, but it wasn't as interesting and sharp as the first two eps led me to expect. Good development, but too much that is obvious or just little tricks. Not as much of a hit as I hoped. But still firmly in the top tier of this season's shows for me.

Whether the apparently forming triangle will be a good thing or not remains to be seen. But at the moment I certainly prefer Minchi to get her wish. And Kou to get his, too, lol.

Not that I'm complaining, since I like her work, but Omigawa Chiaki's flat voice was more in evidence this time.

Jiromaru was so definitively slotted as a complete buffoon in episode 3 that there's no way it's an accident that he floats the theory about Tohru leaving for the other inn. It was as if they were preemptively winking to the audience that this is all just a misunderstanding, and hilarity is about to ensue. It kinda killed the suspense for the rest of the episode, but since this show really is about the character development, and about Ohana's relationships with others, that's sort of alright with me.

The truth is that the day to day goings on at the inn and at school have been pretty standard fare. At best. It's in the little character moments, and the overarching story of Ohana where the series still shines.

Some stuff to look out for:
- Grandma jokes in private about the inn going under. She quickly plays it off as a stab at dry humor, but it's a curious little throw-away. Uncle also talks about modernizing things to keep up with the times, so maybe the old inn's fortunes are waning.
- This is at least the second time that Ohana has imagined something about the "rival" inn that turns out to be untrue. It's pretty clear that the two managers have a professional relationship of some sort.
- Did anyone really believe that Tohru's prickish behavior wasn't a facade, at least in part? He's pretty rough with the girls, but they wouldn't keep him around if he didn't have a soft side.
- Ohana is slowly but surely starting to understand about love through observing Minko. I think she gets now why Kou didn't show up to see her off. I suppose those were travel magazines open on his bed at the end?
- Minko's nickname offer -- and its subsequent retraction -- was predictable, but I laughed anyway. "Balut" it is!

And yes, the bird is now my favorite character of the new anime season.

I do like how Ohana is continuing to develop and relates the drama at the inn back to her relationship with Ko.

However, the other girls aren't getting as much development as they should. Minko hasn't really grown except for being a tsundere towards Ohana, and Nako was essentially sidelined this episode.

Since this is a 2-cour anime, at least there's still plenty of room for change.

Ah, this episode did the classic bait-and-switch regarding Tooru and the misunderstanding that he would transfer to Fukuda Inn. Also highly hints the Mari Okada style relationship/shipper storyline with a complex love *insert many sided shape*, that she's pretty much used in every series she been involved in. I'm highly suspecting the following:

Ko likes Ohana.
Minko likes Tooru.
Tooru likes Ohana.
Yuina likes Tooru (possibility).
Ohana isn't really romantically interested in anyone just yet.
Nako isn't interested in relationships.

Since I know where this series is intending to go now, all in all, it's a pretty good episode. Although the last few episodes were relatively light-hearted, I'm sure we will get a dramatic one once in a while as well.

One thing however that I would like to see is more on the emphasis of the coming-of-age aspect rather than the romantic aspect. Romance is fine, but love *insert many sided shape* here tend to get a lot of people up in flames if the wrong shipping pair ends up being concluded. See True Tears for example and how many people purely disliked the series just because the majority didn't agree who ended up with who...

I'm glad someone else caught that, because I was beginning to worry that it had gone totally unnoticed.

You guys are a tough audience - thought that was excellent, though not quite as great as last week. And grey heron is GAR.

A fine episode with good pacing. I still hate Minko, for some reason. But hopefully she won't drown in Kazumi status where I just hate them when they appear.

But they got it right! Minko's so obnoxious, there's no way to take her character seriously. So let's make a joke out of it! I approve greatly.

Poor dumb Ohana. While she didn't get owned badly, except for some heron annoyance, she ran all that way for nothing and humiliated herself. Well, nothing new. The cast humiliating themselves is pretty much the norm.

However, I must admire her diligence and it's not always about results. She might actually just make a breakthrough with both Kou and Minko. Err, not in that way hopefully. (Damn writer guy)

Also, that's one of the most beautiful animated shrines ever. 7/10

The way Tohru treats Ohana reminds me of the way a 10 year-old boy treats his crush - juvenile barbs, the nose-grabbing, etc. It might be his way of declaring interest. I also thought her "I'm still not very fond of him!" was a blatant relationship flag.

Of course, that would complicate things to no end. Ohana has been trying to build some sort of relationship with Minchi, and it's hard to see Minchi forgiving her for having feelings for Tohru. There's also the matter of Ko-chan, who hovers over everything in Ohana's life despite not being physically present. She finally did reply to him - though I thought it was cruel of her to wait as long as she did - and we now know he'll be coming to the inn soon.

Tohru is annoying me, such a boring character doesn't deserve this much attention, maybe they're just getting it out of the way in the early episodes, because I really hope there's no more drama surrounding him.

Also, what is he, in his 20's or something? Guys going after sixteen year olds, maybe he should step his game up and find someone his own age, a small town like that has to be brimming with young lass's looking to hook up. The talks of OhanaxTohru make me want to puke, what is wrong with you people? Hopefully he has a shred of decency and is just acting like a big brother to her, what a creeper.

This show really needs male cast members in the 17-20 range. It is a 26 episode series so theres plenty of time for more to be introduced. Hopefully Minko realizes she just has a boring crush on him only because he took her under his wing, or some new blood comes along and gives Tohru some competition. His harem of impressionable 16-17 year old high school girls can't last forever.

^Tohru is 23. Minko and Nako are 17, and Ohana and Yuina are 16.

Honestly, the age difference isn't that bad (compared to many Shoujo where the age difference can be 10+ years (and let's not forget supernatural titles where the romantic interest can be 100s of years old yet still interested in a 14 year old girl )), and since there is no real romance from Tohru toward anyone, having 16/17 year old girls interested in him is not bad or even unrealistic. Now if they were interested in Renji and Renji was interested in them...then you might have a dilemma .

I also find Tohru annoying. As far as Ohana x Tohru is concerned, I think they will come to respect each other and maybe like each other but I just can't see them as a couple.

I have noticed that Ko is mentioned, remembered, and agonized over in every episode so far. I think that his confession really shocked Ohana. She would be confused and unable to respond because she doesn't seem to be very in touch with her feelings as she tries to be with the others at the Inn. She doesn't seem to reflect on her feelings or her actions and if Ko makes a visit to the Inn, it might be the catalyst that makes her realize how important he is to her.

Keep the bird...The bird rocks.

Oh yea.... Tohru, yea, he's pretty obnoxious and immature, and it's hard to find guys in this anime that don't act half their age. He comes across as a male tsundere, and I'm not to keen on that regardless of gender.

But they have 20 episodes to prove themselves; and hopefully they will delve more into Ohana and Kou.

This I wouldn't mind. Ren looks like he's seen a lot in his days, I'm sure he's had countless women in his prime, so taking interest in the youngins wouldn't be so bad, he's proven his worth as a man. he has a solemn manly aura about him, I'm sure he could teach those girls a thing or two.

Tohru, not so much.

Actually, it's very realistic for every single teenage girl at the inn to be attracted to Tohru. Just like how teenage girls fantasize about superstars (and women older than they are as well - if I hear one more Brad Pitt squeal from my grandmother...) Anyway, ignoring my own personal issues, Tohru has not yet reciprocated these feelings. We've yet to see if Tohru is the creepy chef who works at the inn to pick up teenage girls, or if he's just there to learn how to cook.

Age-disparate relationships tend to break apart with the teenage girl realizing their fantasy crush is into people of their own age range; everyone moves on with their lives. Tohru may already have a girlfriend of his own age (otherwise he would have no need for a cool motorcycle). Tohru might even be engaged... no, dare I say he's already married?! 23 seems like the right age to have a shotgun wedding, or already to have had one. Eventually, Minko is probably going to accept Tohru doesn't love her, and will move on to become a stronger woman from the experience of unrequited love. I wouldn't mind the introduction of a love rival to Tohru (one of the more attractive Minchi loveboys from Ohana's high school will work nicely) as an escape plan to when the heartbreak comes.

I'm more concerned with Ohana's chances at love. Ko isn't the problem; he's openly stated his love for Ohana, but got discouraged when Ohana didn't openly admit her own love and ran away. Love usually doesn't work out so romantically. The scene of the girl and the guy both admitting their long repressed interest in each other, followed by a kiss and holding hands while walking home - not happening. More realistically, as seen in episode 1, one person is head over heels while the other isn't really sure how to react. But over time, the skeptical one slowly develops their feelings and the couple eventually does get together. My concern is with Ohana: She's great at inspiring others to follow their hearts, but has trouble summoning up the courage herself. Ohana couldn't write a reply text, of all the trivial things, to a long-time friend who wished her the best. There are problems, but... at least she now has the resolve to text Ko. Little steps making up the tallest staircases, I guess.

And what about Nako? Is she doomed to yuri fanfiction pairings between Ohana and Minko? Because we've already seen them sparkling, splashing in a hot spring... ugh, now even I'm falling prey to the fanservice. I blame Jiroumaru. Hopefully a straight love interest appears soon to relieve Nako of her solitary confinement. Heck, I'll even take Tohru to be in love with Nako; we have seen little interaction between the two, and opposites attract after all! Would make for some great tension between Minchi and Nachi, and leave Ohana in a very strange situation as peacemaker. Even more interesting is if Nako were also in love; sorry Minchi, you just can't win at both cooking and love. But look on the bright side. There's a whole harem of boys waiting for you at school.
