I did play the original game, and I thought the movie was awesome. There were a few parts missing but it couldn't be helped trying to condense the entire arc into a 90 minute movie. I did watch it RAW so I'm not sure how well they explained some things or quote from the game but it seemed pretty good from my very limited japanese. For those who haven't played the game though, I think they would get lost. I guess this movie was more for the fans than trying to introduce new people but I would still recommend watching it. I did wish there were a few more Shirou x Rin moments though.

Even though they didn't do it as the novel did. In the movie Shirou traced Caliburn I think it was. This would give Shirou the ability to fight on par or even better than Gilgamesh since he inherits the original owner's (Saber) swordsmanship while in UBW. Gilgamesh isn't as good of a swordsman in a direct fight as someone of the Saber class would be. He is also very arrogant and wouldn't even think that a human could stand up to him. The fight was still great but I did wish they did the original way.

Anyone know if there is a omake or specials on the dvd? I'd love to see if they made a special Tiger Dojo or something funny . Wonder what is next for Typemoon. I hope for the Fate/Kaleid Ruby Ilya animation!!!

Well, they changed a lot from the game, so as a true adaptation it wasn't very good. However, taken on its own, without comparing it 100% to the game, it was amazing. The changes they made worked in the context of the movie, and I'm satisfied with the movie.

Ugh. I'm already mad before even seeing the movie if they changed the Gil fight like that. This is not Fate. Shirou isn't supposed to do that. Shirou is supposed to fight with like 10000000 swords, where he keeps copying whatever Gil takes out.

Actually, I believe that he does fight properly with the swords. That's why he can beat Gil, because he's better at it. True, they sword-spam each other as well, but the description in the VN implies that the fight is more than just that.

no thats not quite right. they may have fought like that briefly(i cant remember too well; been a while since i played vn) but shirou's swordsmanship is somewhere between bad and terrible (as opposed to being non-existant thx to copying archer) either way its certainly not good enough to take on a heroic spirit. only reason he can fight gil is because they are similar. gil is just the "owner" of weapons and not their "user". therefore, he cannot use any of them to their full potential (except ea). that is precisely why shirou can fight because he is also just an owner (of his fake copies). to be more precise, shirou has an edge because all his swords are already out near him (post ubw summoning) while gil has yet to take his out of the gate. shirou can only fight gil (provided he doesnt use ea) and no other. to fight someone else, he would need archer's experience.

I just finished UBW Vn
and from what i saw, Shirou was terrible throughout, the only thing that kept him alive was him copying Gilg each time, though it be poorly, it broke. haven't seen the movie yet, so i cant say what goes down.

Everything was wrong, so instead of writing an essay, I'll point out the few good things:
Lancer is still a badass, even though they nerfed his power versus Archer to make Archer seem more cool.
Archer vs Shirou was done pretty well considering how badly everything else was done.
Berserker vs Saber
Dolphin doesn't look as bad and out of place as dragon did
The animation of Rin's boobs
Everything else was wrong.

the dragon had a reference to King Arthur's legend, so that its not out of place at all.

Yeah, we got that Arthur is related to dragons enough times in the VN. This time instead of a poorly created CG dragon popping up, though, the scene is made less awkwardly and it shows a bit of Rin's childhood. Shirou is not suddenly getting his arm bitten off.

You see, when Shirou traces a sword, he gets the skills of the original user too, so he is as proficient with the weapon as the original user of it was. Gil, OTOH, doesn't know how to use the weapons. If you read the VN, Shirou doesn't impale Gil with a sword rain, he slashes his arm off with a normal sword when he tries to use Ea. So, it's clear that he must have been fighting properly. He was sword-spamming too, but that alone could only ever lead to a draw. The reaosn he can win is both because he can sword-spam as quick as Gil (if not quicker) and can also out-fight him in certain circumstances, due to the fact that he obtains some of the abilities of the original user through tracing.
