Accel World's timeline starts 2145. If you think about it Accel World is a spiritual successor to SAO.

The Accel World manga (volume 1, page 58) states that the "neurolinker" that the characters use to connect to the virtual world was developed "AD 2040~", and later it states that "no one older than age 15 can access the Accelerated World, so that puts the date around 2055-ish, I think.

It's surprisingly that what was originally a web novel got no.1 without an anime.
Speaking of that, the second web novel Dengeki picked up (in fact the second of its kind, ie. commercialized web novels), Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (with just 3 volumes) debuted at 29. I have a feeling it's going to be another winner like SAO. EDIT: Kirito is no. 1 (male) Asuna is no. 2 (female) Last edited by larethian; 2011-11-16 at 14:11. |

Well, it's a surprise. I thought the popularity of SAO is lower compared to To Aru Majutsu no Index but to think SAO can beat Index, hmm.. interesting.
Whatever it is, I am happy that SAO got the No.1 title without an anime and still has a trump card in the author's hand (if you had read the web version, you know what I mean). PS: No wonder SAO is called the ultimate weapon of Dengeki by the fans.

because of anime announcement and people are excited with it but honestly I like the first few arcs but the novel decide to delay the next arc and do the side stories of the web version which is not what I wanted but still they manage to be rank one despite all that. Though not sure in term of sold value because if I remember it right haganai is still have higher sales than sao.

Haganai had an Anime announcement earlier than SAO, so I'm pretty sure it didn't help that much. Anyway There's really too many factors to consider, remember it's not only the popularity with the mainstream audience, there's also the collaborators.
