I thought about this for a bit, but then I realized, any form of visual entertainment (Or literary for that matter), whether it be live action movies, cartoons, or books can be lonely hobby depending on the person.
It becomes lonely for a person when the person in question finds the life of the characters, more exciting than theirs, and in fact at times wishes to be the said character. Sometimes I have been guilty of this myself.

I'd don't even want to think what would happen if they saw some of the stuff I enjoy as they really wouldn't get it. Stuff like one I'm finally starting to properly watch (as I only saw the first 3 episode before) of Keroro Gunsou. "Humm a talking animated frog that you need subtitles to understand, OKKKK " Quote:

My friends are hooked up, they don't have a PC though so they all come over at my place every saturday for 1h of pure anime and then stuff irrelevant with this thread's topic
My gf didn't like all sorts of anime (particularly hated blatant shounen like naruto and bleach) but she'd still watch GEASS or death note with me. Unlike the others, instead of porn she had the general pokemon idea in her mind (see "anime is only for kids"). |

Well, indeed that I'm also prefer to watch a "serious" series alone, So I can repeat it whatever time I want if I don't get a part of it or I just want to repeat the particular scene. But obviously anime isn't a lonely hobby for me. Since my college life pretty much like the ones from Genshiken.
Usually I discuss (sometime argue) about latest anime episodes everyday after class at the campus foodcourt. We also go to anime convention and cosplays party together. And also do quite a lot of anime-related gathering. If I'm alone, I guess I cannot know anime "better". And it's always hillarious to watch a "crazy" series together. I remember that when we watched the 1st episode of Queen's Blade, we even have complains from the neighborhood that we shouldn't laugh that loud...

I think ANY hobby can be "lonely"... unless it's sports because you play to play against another person right? But with things like anime, you can enjoy it on your own (in a corner? O_o) and it can still be fun. Therefore, I think if you're the antisocial type of person, then yes... you like anime and you'll probably stay lonely because you're not your hobbies to socialize. On the other hand, I don't really consider anime a hobby >_> To me, it's a past-time that I use to well... past time lol! I'm not as addicted as I used to be although I still enjoy marathoning an entire series at once. I do think it's a lonely hobby (since I don't have many friends at all that share my passion) but I'm far from a being loner =) I have a lot of other interests and areas that my friends and I bond over. |

Would be great to talk about some animes with other people, most of all I hate the situations I find something very fitting to add from anime during conversation and everyone just ignore the point and watch you like Ó_ò"you watch anime?"...
And then it is quite pointless to begin explanations like, "Well but there are really good animes too, they are not all big eyed girls and pokemons"-- they already shut their ears for now. However I prefer watching anime "da solo" since I want freely to express whole scale of my emotions when I'm watching it.

It is a 'lonely' hobby for me because I've never really made any friends that like it. I mean, I've met anime fans, but they are often too eccentric for me to connect with on a deeper level. I don't mean to stereotype anime fans but this has been my experience.
Either way, anime has always been a rather minor part of my life - I watch shows at night to unwind. With that considered it doesn't really matter. Hell, I've been watching anime by myself and at night for so long I can't really picture it being a social hobby. |

I think how lonely the hobby is can also be somewhat dependent on what your local anime fan scene is like. Many of the friends I've made since high school are people I meet through anime, including my girlfriend.
One of my favourite ways to consume anime is to invite a group of friends from my anime club over to watch twelve or thirteen episodes of an anime on a weekend afternoon. This has become popular enough that other members have also started to use it now. That said, a lot of my day to day anime watching is done alone.

I don't know if "lonely" is the word I'd use, even where it's applicable (some here obviously watch anime with other people, so it's a downright sociable hobby for them).
However, I would say that anime is a largely solitary hobby for me. But, then, that's fine. My other main entertainment hobby is watching pro hockey (NHL usually). And I tend to do that with other people. So, having a hobby of sorts that I can engage in when nobody is available to hang out with is kind of good, actually.
