So, for the fight... Nanoha doesn't know everything that Raging Heart can do and Fate has more experience. That sounds more and more like the S1 fight the more this go. If Nanoha want to win this, she'll either have to do something unlike her, something Fate will never expect... Or Fate gets 'Bound by Nanoha' before she receives a rebefriending.

One would assume Fate has learned a few new tricks over the years, too. ;p

Well, let's see... does this chapter quell my earlier complaints? The short answer is no.

For one, it's just as likely that Ix doesn't even have an original 'mother' in the first place. Since genetic manipulation was all the rage back then, and since she serves a very unique and specialized purpose I'd say she was grown in a test tube, built from the ground up to manufacture Mariages.

However since that was never stated I guess you could use whatever backstory you want.

It's stated several times that the 'mama' thing was a joke, and yet they, and Nanoha in particular, treat it seriously. It still doesn't make sense for Ix to form such an attachment to Vivio and Einhart. Yeah, they want her to have a fun childhood, but one doesn't need a motherly figure to have that. That the three of them form a family is great, but again they'd be more like sisters, not mother/daughter.

... Pretty sure I have other things to say on this but I'm tired and can't put my thoughts together.

For Sette, this feeling was pleasantly nostalgic. It had been a while since she got thrust into an actual combat situation. As much as the doctor and his co-workers tried to convince her otherwise, this was her comfort zone.

No time to dawdle. She had to begin calculating her next moves to achieve victory conditions. A quick analysis to determine what steps would have to be taken to achieve her goal.

For starters, the territorial advantage belonged to her, due to being in and out of this particular kitchen for many years. She knew the exits and the access points. But that was probably the only advantage she had. All other factors were in favour of the Testarossa replica.

She had the barrier jacket while the Combat Cyborg was in standard prisoner sleepwear. She wielded that axe like device, which could transform into energy swords of different sizes based on what she recalled from the last time she and Testarossa crossed paths in battle years ago. The only possible device she could probably acquire is the mass produced one that was clasped in that unconscious guard’s hands. It was better than nothing and Sette would have to be certain to make the proper apologies later.

Combat ability wise, Sette would probably have to judge that her opponent had the edge. While she managed to get some exercise during her incarceration, it was not as intensive as the training drills she had went through with her older sister Tre. If anything, her combat efficiency was probably down by five to ten percent compared to her abilities five years ago. In the case of the clone across from her, she could tell that the other mage has seen battle actively. Even though she didn’t look like it with the way she spoke in such a… childish manner, the clone was perfectly positioned to easily defend against magical attacks. Adding further to her disadvantage was the presence of Doctor Miura and Garn. They could easily be used as hostages or alternative targets.

So eliminating the enemy was clearly not the optimal victory condition in this scenario. The next best solution would be to try and restrain her long enough for security forces to come and make a formal arrest.

Yes, that would suffice. Now that the course of action has been determined, it is time to act as soon as the opportunity arose…

“Touma, it is 0430 hours,” chirped Steed softly, floating near the boy’s right ear. “Also, you may wish to be careful.”

“Who is it this time?” groaned Touma as he tried to adjust his eyesight in the dark. He had long ago gotten used to how the Nakajima girls would climb in his bed and use him as a surrogate teddy bear simply because his bedroom was conveniently located close to the washroom. So rather than head back to their room after a late night bathroom break, they could just head to his bed and resume their slumber as soon as possible.

“I believe it is Ms. Dieci and Ms. Cinque who are currently attached to you in the bed. They must have had a rough and long work day if they have not been awakened by my soft alarm. In fact, they are still both in uniform.”

It took a few moments for him to squeeze out of their grip and move to his closet to get changed into some workout clothes. After adjusting the blankets and tucking in Dieci and Cinque, he made his way out of the house and saw Einhart Stratos already out on the front lawn, dressed in her own green fall jacket and track pants. “Hello, Touma-kun.”

“Geez, Einhart… the sun hasn’t risen yet and you’re fresh as a daisy! How do you do it?” asked Touma as he fought back a yawn.

“It’s a result of several years of training and focusing on developing the three crucial aspects of being: the Mind, the Body and the Spirit,” replied the green haired girl without missing a beat. “It’s a common philosophy in all martial arts, not just Kaiser Arts. The Body is developed through rigorous physical conditioning exercises, which is the purpose of the workouts. The Mind is developed through mental thinking and active learning, which is the purpose of our study sessions. As for the Spirit, that comes through an established goal and a firm foundation of beliefs to guide you. That is something you seem to be working on already.”

“Yeah…” He definitely had a goal in mind: to get to the bottom of the mysterious attack on his village on Vaizen.

“Then, I believe it is best that prior to starting today’s workout, we energize your Spirit.” She reached into her jacket pockets and pulled out… a pair of maracas.

“What the…?”

Einhart shook the maracas a few times while fighting back the blush on her cheeks before going into her song.

"Good morning good morning bonjour!"
"Good morning good morning bonjour!"
"Touma-kun! Touma-kun! Good morning, Touma-kun!"

“………” He had no idea what to say. Seriously.

"Get up early, bonjour!"
"Have a good day, bonjour!"

Silence reigned for a few moments before the male just started clapping his hands, unsure of how else to respond. “…… er, thanks?”

“You’re welcome.” She put down the maracas so that they wouldn’t get in the way of stretching.

“So… where did that come from?”

“It’s a memory of my ancestor. One of the few unusual but pleasant ones prior to the conclusion of the Saint King Unification War.” An amused smile came to Einhart’s face. “Olivie would sing that song to wake up Ingvalt while she stayed in Shutra.”

Touma immediately recognized the name and it took him another minute to try and put the picture together. “…… so you’re telling me that the last Sankt Kaiser, one of the strongest martial artists of the Ancient Belkan era… would sing that song to wake up your ancestor?”

“Every. Single. Morning. Sure, the little dance and instruments may change around a bit but the jingle remained the same.”

“….. unreal,” muttered the boy. “What happened to her being ‘subtle as a flower’?”

“I also specifically mentioned that she was as bright as the sun. You can’t get any brighter than that. Now, let’s start our stretches and then we’ll do a ten mile run.”

‘Ugh…’ Touma mentally prepared himself for the upcoming pain to come.

Who will be the Inter-Dimensional Chess Tournament champion?

Hayate Yagami, Lillet decided, was a devil.

As a Royal Magician, Lillet Blan had dealt with many devils in her life: they were charismatic, terrifying, and always wickedly amused with the frustrations of their victims.

…Exactly like the young woman contemplating her next move from across the chessboard.

She hadn't had a chance to watch the young TSAB officer play earlier, as Lillet had been battling in her own rounds, but if the Britannian prince's frustrated spiel after his loss to the brunette in the earlier round was any indication, Hayate seemed like the devious sort.

For the bragging rights alone, half the chess players here would have freely taken part in this inter-dimensional ChessMaster tournament. Of course, the $10 000 grand prize was nice too, Lillet had to admit. It could give her and Amoretta a nice start to their dream of buying a townhouse together.

Watching her final opponent, Lillet wondered if Hayate and the intelligent, slightly creepily intense young student Lillet had defeated in the semi-finals were related. They both had a lazily amused air to their smiles, although it was reassuring to see that Hayate's grin lacked the edge of malice that the young man's had.

But it was still eerie to see, especially since Hayate was soundlessly chuckling to herself as she rubbed her chin, looking at the board with a diabolical grin.

Now, Lillet had seen real diabolical grins, including one on the weird pale-skinned, feminine-looking demon with red eyes she had faced off with in the preliminary round. He had quite the demonic aura to him, making Lillet want to recoil and shudder from the miasma he seemed to emit even while being quite oddly civil during the match. And she had never seen Mr. Advocat without his classically wicked, devil-may-care smirk—and Grimlet hadn't exactly had lips, so his face had always been twisted in an evil smile…Maybe it was only disturbing for Lillet to see that kind of devilish expression on a sweet-looking young woman?

Lillet drew a breath as Hayate made another seemingly random move that just destroyed yet another one of Lillet's strategies.

She couldn't help blurting out in dismay, "You don't just do that!"

"Why not?" Hayate asked cheerfully.

Lillet sighed, eyeing the board again. If they had been playing one of the preliminary rounds she would have swooped in to take advantage of Hayate's newly exposed queen, but since the commander had made it all the way to finals Lillet doubted that things were as obvious as they appeared. Besides, moving her bishop to take Hayate's queen would possibly leave her king open to Hayate's rook two moves later…

"You learn from watching my moves, don't you?" Hyate chuckled, leaning her chin on her laced fingers.

"I'm better at "best two out of three"," Lillet admitted, moving a knight to cover her bishop and to challenge Hayate's rook. She made her own wry observation. "You play best with cautious players."

"What makes you say that?" Hayate's queen moved to take out one of Lillet's rooks, suddenly opening up a lot of pathways on that side of the board.

"You're relying on me being too cautious to take advantage of your reckless style." Lillet moved her own queen to claim one of Hayate's pawns, giving her a chance to target three of her opponent's key pieces.

"That's assuming that I have a style," Hayate laughed, moving a pawn up and suddenly Lillet found her queen being challenged by a small row of pawns. "What if I just like doing things on a whim?"

That made Lillet giggle. "Of course that's what you want me to think. I don't trust whimsical devils!"

Which, for some reason, made Hayate convulse with laughter. "I know some Devils who aren't sly or whimsical at all, but who are very good at making friends!"

Lillet brought her queen back into a safer location. Immediately, Hayate moved her knight.

"Checkmate."

"Huh?" Lillet stared at the board in shock, then double-checked. "No it's not!"

Hayate started laughing again. "You looked so surprised!"

Lillet chuckled, letting the joke slide. Examining the pieces, she moved her king over a square. "You're partially right though—checkmate for you in three."

"Yes, but you first." Hayate tapped the square where Lillet's queen will be in the next move, then tipped her king over. "Your win—congratulations."

"It might not have been for sure," Lillet protested, reluctantly shaking hands with Hayate. "You could have turned it around depending on what you decided to do with your knight—"

"Of course it would have been," Hayate replied, smiling. "We have different strategies after all—you save your best moves for the end-game. I let my friends do it for me instead."

"Didn't you want the prize?" Lillet couldn't help asking, curious and intrigued.

Hayate only laughed as if the question delighted her. "I'm glad you won! It was more important for me to prove a point to my friends and co-workers."

"What point?"

"That there is someone more cunning and devious than I am!"

She had the barrier jacket while the Combat Cyborg was in standard prisoner sleepwear. She wielded that axe like device, which could transform into energy swords of different sizes based on what she recalled from the last time she and Testarossa crossed paths in battle years ago. The only possible device she could probably acquire is the mass produced one that was clasped in that unconscious guard’s hands. It was better than nothing and Sette would have to be certain to make the proper apologies later.

Combat ability wise, Sette would probably have to judge that her opponent had the edge. While she managed to get some exercise during her incarceration, it was not as intensive as the training drills she had went through with her older sister Tre. If anything, her combat efficiency was probably down by five to ten percent compared to her abilities five years ago. In the case of the clone across from her, she could tell that the other mage has seen battle actively. Even though she didn’t look like it with the way she spoke in such a… childish manner, the clone was perfectly positioned to easily defend against magical attacks. Adding further to her disadvantage was the presence of Doctor Miura and Garn. They could easily be used as hostages or alternative targets.

So eliminating the enemy was clearly not the optimal victory condition in this scenario. The next best solution would be to try and restrain her long enough for security forces to come and make a formal arrest.

Yes, that would suffice. Now that the course of action has been determined, it is time to act as soon as the opportunity arose…

“Who is it this time?” groaned Touma as he tried to adjust his eyesight in the dark. He had long ago gotten used to how the Nakajima girls would climb in his bed and use him as a surrogate teddy bear simply because his bedroom was conveniently located close to the washroom. So rather than head back to their room after a late night bathroom break, they could just head to his bed and resume their slumber as soon as possible.

“I believe it is Ms. Dieci and Ms. Cinque who are currently attached to you in the bed. They must have had a rough and long work day if they have not been awakened by my soft alarm. In fact, they are still both in uniform.”

It took a few moments for him to squeeze out of their grip and move to his closet to get changed into some workout clothes. After adjusting the blankets and tucking in Dieci and Cinque, he made his way out of the house and saw Einhart Stratos already out on the front lawn, dressed in her own green fall jacket and track pants. “Hello, Touma-kun.”

“Geez, Einhart… the sun hasn’t risen yet and you’re fresh as a daisy! How do you do it?” asked Touma as he fought back a yawn.

“It’s a result of several years of training and focusing on developing the three crucial aspects of being: the Mind, the Body and the Spirit,” replied the green haired girl without missing a beat. “It’s a common philosophy in all martial arts, not just Kaiser Arts. The Body is developed through rigorous physical conditioning exercises, which is the purpose of the workouts. The Mind is developed through mental thinking and active learning, which is the purpose of our study sessions. As for the Spirit, that comes through an established goal and a firm foundation of beliefs to guide you. That is something you seem to be working on already.”

“Yeah…” He definitely had a goal in mind: to get to the bottom of the mysterious attack on his village on Vaizen.

“Then, I believe it is best that prior to starting today’s workout, we energize your Spirit.” She reached into her jacket pockets and pulled out… a pair of maracas.

“What the…?”

Einhart shook the maracas a few times while fighting back the blush on her cheeks before going into her song.

"Good morning good morning bonjour!"
"Good morning good morning bonjour!"
"Touma-kun! Touma-kun! Good morning, Touma-kun!"

“………” He had no idea what to say. Seriously.

"Get up early, bonjour!"

Silence reigned for a few moments before the male just started clapping his hands, unsure of how else to respond. “…… er, thanks?”

“So… where did that come from?”

“It’s a memory of my ancestor. One of the few unusual but pleasant ones prior to the conclusion of the Saint King Unification War.” An amused smile came to Einhart’s face. “Olivie would sing that song to wake up Ingvalt while she stayed in Shutra.”

Touma immediately recognized the name and it took him another minute to try and put the picture together. “…… so you’re telling me that the last Sankt Kaiser, one of the strongest martial artists of the Ancient Belkan era… would sing that song to wake up your ancestor?”

“Every. Single. Morning. Sure, the little dance and instruments may change around a bit but the jingle remained the same.”

“….. unreal,” muttered the boy. “What happened to her being ‘subtle as a flower’?”

“I also specifically mentioned that she was as bright as the sun. You can’t get any brighter than that. Now, let’s start our stretches and then we’ll do a ten mile run.”

‘Ugh…’ Touma mentally prepared himself for the upcoming pain to come.

Now that's just evil, delaying that fight... As for Einhart, I hope she won't have to do it again. I'm pretty sure some would never let her live it down.

As a Royal Magician, Lillet Blan had dealt with many devils in her life: they were charismatic, terrifying, and always wickedly amused with the frustrations of their victims.

…Exactly like the young woman contemplating her next move from across the chessboard.

She hadn't had a chance to watch the young TSAB officer play earlier, as Lillet had been battling in her own rounds, but if the Britannian prince's frustrated spiel after his loss to the brunette in the earlier round was any indication, Hayate seemed like the devious sort.

For the bragging rights alone, half the chess players here would have freely taken part in this inter-dimensional ChessMaster tournament. Of course, the $10 000 grand prize was nice too, Lillet had to admit. It could give her and Amoretta a nice start to their dream of buying a townhouse together.

Watching her final opponent, Lillet wondered if Hayate and the intelligent, slightly creepily intense young student Lillet had defeated in the semi-finals were related. They both had a lazily amused air to their smiles, although it was reassuring to see that Hayate's grin lacked the edge of malice that the young man's had.

But it was still eerie to see, especially since Hayate was soundlessly chuckling to herself as she rubbed her chin, looking at the board with a diabolical grin.

Now, Lillet had seen real diabolical grins, including one on the weird pale-skinned, feminine-looking demon with red eyes she had faced off with in the preliminary round. He had quite the demonic aura to him, making Lillet want to recoil and shudder from the miasma he seemed to emit even while being quite oddly civil during the match. And she had never seen Mr. Advocat without his classically wicked, devil-may-care smirk—and Grimlet hadn't exactly had lips, so his face had always been twisted in an evil smile…Maybe it was only disturbing for Lillet to see that kind of devilish expression on a sweet-looking young woman?

Lillet drew a breath as Hayate made another seemingly random move that just destroyed yet another one of Lillet's strategies.

She couldn't help blurting out in dismay, "You don't just do that!"

"Why not?" Hayate asked cheerfully.

Lillet sighed, eyeing the board again. If they had been playing one of the preliminary rounds she would have swooped in to take advantage of Hayate's newly exposed queen, but since the commander had made it all the way to finals Lillet doubted that things were as obvious as they appeared. Besides, moving her bishop to take Hayate's queen would possibly leave her king open to Hayate's rook two moves later…

"You learn from watching my moves, don't you?" Hyate chuckled, leaning her chin on her laced fingers.

"I'm better at "best two out of three"," Lillet admitted, moving a knight to cover her bishop and to challenge Hayate's rook. She made her own wry observation. "You play best with cautious players."

"What makes you say that?" Hayate's queen moved to take out one of Lillet's rooks, suddenly opening up a lot of pathways on that side of the board.

"You're relying on me being too cautious to take advantage of your reckless style." Lillet moved her own queen to claim one of Hayate's pawns, giving her a chance to target three of her opponent's key pieces.

"That's assuming that I have a style," Hayate laughed, moving a pawn up and suddenly Lillet found her queen being challenged by a small row of pawns. "What if I just like doing things on a whim?"

That made Lillet giggle. "Of course that's what you want me to think. I don't trust whimsical devils!"

Which, for some reason, made Hayate convulse with laughter. "I know some Devils who aren't sly or whimsical at all, but who are very good at making friends!"

Lillet brought her queen back into a safer location. Immediately, Hayate moved her knight.

"Checkmate."

"Huh?" Lillet stared at the board in shock, then double-checked. "No it's not!"

Hayate started laughing again. "You looked so surprised!"

Lillet chuckled, letting the joke slide. Examining the pieces, she moved her king over a square. "You're partially right though—checkmate for you in three."

"Yes, but you first." Hayate tapped the square where Lillet's queen will be in the next move, then tipped her king over. "Your win—congratulations."

"It might not have been for sure," Lillet protested, reluctantly shaking hands with Hayate. "You could have turned it around depending on what you decided to do with your knight—"

"Of course it would have been," Hayate replied, smiling. "We have different strategies after all—you save your best moves for the end-game. I let my friends do it for me instead."

"Didn't you want the prize?" Lillet couldn't help asking, curious and intrigued.

Hayate only laughed as if the question delighted her. "I'm glad you won! It was more important for me to prove a point to my friends and co-workers."

"What point?"

"That there is someone more cunning and devious than I am!"

Well, let's see... does this chapter quell my earlier complaints? The short answer is no.

For one, it's just as likely that Ix doesn't even have an original 'mother' in the first place. Since genetic manipulation was all the rage back then, and since she serves a very unique and specialized purpose I'd say she was grown in a test tube, built from the ground up to manufacture Mariages.

However since that was never stated I guess you could use whatever backstory you want.

It's stated several times that the 'mama' thing was a joke, and yet they, and Nanoha in particular, treat it seriously. It still doesn't make sense for Ix to form such an attachment to Vivio and Einhart. Yeah, they want her to have a fun childhood, but one doesn't need a motherly figure to have that. That the three of them form a family is great, but again they'd be more like sisters, not mother/daughter.

... Pretty sure I have other things to say on this but I'm tired and can't put my thoughts together.

The rest of the chapter was fine.

Thanks for your comments and corrections again. However, as for the Ix comments... after a lot of thought and conversations with various people, I think some perspective is needed. You have this view of her in your head based on theories and guesswork, which is fine; Ix is a blank slate in a lot of ways. But as it the case with such things, there are several valid ways one could go about it.

In this case, it would be like someone commenting on a Yuunoha story of yours and going, "Hmm, I don't see them getting together, because they are just not like that. And you're totally ignoring the feels Nanoha and Fate have for each other." Or someone telling you "I don't see that Teana and Vice had any feelings for each other, so I don't see this relationship as plausible." I think you'd agree there is more than one valid interpretation for characters.

So while I'm still considering things, I've had quite a few talks with people who feel there isn't much implausibility in how I've portrayed things. As you noted, Ix's history is a blank slate, and thus one can change her character greatly depending on what kind of backstory one creates for her. As long as there are no contradictions, there is plenty of wiggle room, and that's where fanfic authors write.

I will note that if Nanoha seems to take it a bit more seriously, it's because she's just arrived and hasn't known Ix very long.

"Huh?" Erio blinked before Lutecia pressed her body to his fully and kissed him full on the lips, ignore the gasp of surprise from Caro as she did so. It only took a moment before his hands grabbed her sides and he was kissing her back, a full-out groan escaping her lips as he did so.

"Erio! Lutecia!" The two broke the kiss and gasped for air before turning to look at Nove, who was smirking at them. "You're lucky the brats aren't up yet, but if you wanna make out, make sure you do it out of sight. We don't need to give any of them ideas."

Lutecia grinned at Nove. "Great idea! Come on, Erio!" She grabbed his hand and lifted him up before dragging him off to her room.

Nove just chuckled before looking at Caro. "...What's wrong?"

"Erio-kun was grabbing her butt, I wanted to see how far they'd go." She pouted more as Nove chuckled and rubbed the top of her head.
