Lol, don't skim it, read it. The answers are all answered in the later parts.
But for laziness, Cardinal is Rubia disguised as Ren for the tournament, team inferno is her team, and only Clair and Fianna knows of Kamito's identity.

How far is the manga compared to the novel?

The Cardinal is Rubia Elstein, Claire's older sister who has stolen a high ranked spirit from the Fire Elemental Lord's shirne causing a great calamity to befall the Empire, when the Fire Elemental Lord got angry, due to Rubia, who was also his queen (a Shrine Maiden that has a role of being a mediator between an Elemental Lord and the rest of the world- if you don't know) doing something like that.

She is also using Ren's appearance to ... pretty much make Kamito participate in the current.

As for Queen Inferno ... well it's the team that Rubia (as Ren Ashbell) leads in the current Blade Dance, which is ... in it's current edition, a team based battle tournament.

Regarding Ren Ashbell's identity ... if you mean Rubia, pretty much the entire harem knows about her true identity.

If you mean Kamito ... at the current moment in the story only Claire, Greyworth, Fianna, Restia, Rubia along with the rest of Team Inferno members and also one of Fianna's friends who became the Fire Queen after Rubia know about his identity.

Regarding the how far is the manga compared to the novels question - based upon what I have seen from the version of the manga translated by the fans, is somewhere in the middle of volume 2 of the LN.

I want to mention that I just deleted about a dozen posts of lists of favourite heroines. You probably already know we don't like list threads, and this thread is for actual discussion of the story, not shipping lists. I would invite someone to create a social group for this franchise, if one doesn't already exists.

Well I'm on Volume 11 half way. It's pretty amazing series so far.

I actually prefer restia instead of est.

The next volume hasn't been even released in Japan yet and won't be released until August 25.

After that it usually takes a few days / weeks for the Chinese version to appear (which the regular translator of this series is translating from) and after that it takes some amount of time to translate the volume.

But, asking when the translation is going to be done, is a great demotivator for pepole who translate this, so just be patient and wait for the volume to be first released and then translated .. which is still going to take some time.

Looks like Ep3 is where Vol 1 ends. So there is no way they will end the anime at vol 3 if vol 1 is covered in 3 episodes only. Most likely the anime will end at vol 5.
