Everything else was from the manga or embellished from the manga. The expanded lisanna's backstory and added a fight between Loke and Gajeel (that was intended to be in the manga but cut for space). Pretty much everything else follows the manga with a few details changed here in there (mainly for avoiding some of the bloody violence).

Episode 38 was really good. Got to see all of those great armor and weapons for Erza. I kinda like this new one. Ikaruga was kind of a good match for her. I was slightly surprised she went down already. Ratings/sales-wise how is this show doing compared to Rave Master?

The thing is most fights in the manga last 3 to 4 chapters, and are paced quite nicely and don't seem pass by that quickly. Though in the anime each episode is about 3 chapters of material, so it's just bad luck really.

While 39 was really good overall, I was disappointed that they swapped-out Jellal's awesome-lookin bodysuit from the manga for just a simple shirt and pants, and the effect for meteor looked cheap and less impressive than I'd hoped.
What made this so great was the fake Erza x Jellal moments (the timing when they showed his creepy face after the hug was perfect) and Natsu's behavior after rescuing her. The tickly-torture was probably the cutest thing with Erza in a long time... especially since this arc was so depressing for her. And the Natsu punching her had a good mix of shock and impact. |

lol Natsu getting to molest erza when she is down. Too bad, he didnt went for the juicy parts.
I agree that meteor looks a bit underwhelming. Probably needs to learn from bleach or naruto at that part.

They're experienced wizards, I would expect them to know how lacrima are used.
Lacrima (in the Fairy Tail World) are used to Focus, Transfer, and Modify magical energy.... There was one used in the Jupiter cannon for exactly the same basic purpose. There seems to me to be no other logical point to having a giant friggin' lacrima if it weren't for storing a ton of magical energy for some reason. Natsu can be pretty dense but Erza and Simon? They should have figured it out the second they heard the council might fire Etherion.

I did read the manga (though my memory of this arc was a bit fuzzy), but I also found it odd how no one figured firing Etherion was going to charge it. I mean Erza walked right up to it when explaining the lack of magical power for the R System. She couldn't just take it the next step and think "oh wait Etherion is a giant blast of magical power!" Suppose some slack can be given to Erza since she hasn't been thinking straight for the past few episodes.
The Jellal and Sieg being the same person really does seem obvious in hindsight. Sadly Jellal didn't consider one important thing; Fairy Tail mages are damn good at destroying their battlefields .
