S'pore girls say NS is good - just don't ask them to do it

I guess it's kind of like being a by-stander...

"Is it good for the country?" is really a very different question to "would you sign up too?" Very few people on this planet ever sign up to the military "for the good of the country", at best they signed up thinking they would protect those they love, it is very rare that "doing good for the country" is actually the real to do it.

I can't blame them. Consider I am technically a dodger of national service of my birth country myself. I have bias in that regard.

Draft Dodgers!

Joking aside, it's kind hypocritical. It's like US Senators saying i support our troops but i won't let my child join the troops.

Doing something 'for the good of the country' is stupid anyway.
The whole purpose of a country's existence is for the good of the people.
If you can not see any ultimate benefit past 'it is for the good of the country', then it is not worth doing.

I disagree with that. The relationship between country and person should always be give and take. When you pay taxes which, for example, go into building roads in a part of the country you don't go to, this is 'for the good of the country'
When you serve in the military (or pay for it), it is 'for the good of the country' but you do reap the benefits which provide you security.
There are very few relationships where the benefits go one way (maybe parent to child) but expecting this from a country to person to be a one way street is like expecting to collect money just for existing...
That's the way I see it anyway.

Really, you can't blame the women. It's not like the men wanted to do it either. If enough men volunteered then there wouldn't be any need for compulsory participation to begin with. They aren't saying anything different to what the men would say.

I never said anything about a one way street.
I said you have to be aware of the ultimate benefit, to figure out if it is worth it.
'The good of the country' is not a worthy benefit in itself.
Building roads, providing security and so on may be.

Couldn't pay me enough to serve on the frontline, analyst though, sure I guess. But it's a moot point anyway since I wouldn't pass the health requirements for illness.

Air strike kills 15 civilians in Yemen by mistake

Quote:
(Reuters) - Fifteen people on their way to a wedding in Yemen were killed in an air strike after their party was mistaken for an al Qaeda convoy, local security officials said on Thursday.

The officials did not identify the plane in the strike in central al-Bayda province, but tribal and local media sources said that it was a drone.

I totally can. If they don't want to do it, they shouldn't force others to do it either, and support its abolition.

Well that is why even the local guys would think twice before marrying a local girl; we guys push back our studies too; and some of us are significantly weaker than girls with injuries and childhood illnesses. There are also queers who refuse to declare their sexuality and served their 2 years (hence the saying NEVER drop your soap in the bathroom).

Heck, there is even a robbery victim who completed the naval diver course with a hand and a hook because one got hacked off. So what is the excuse of being weak?

Pay... Well according to this chart: Link The 'pay' for conscripts start from S$480 to S$1380 not including vocation pay..

So yeah... pay
(oh yeah, the 10 more years of training afterwards hurt too)

There are inaccuracies in the table. It was $370 back in 2009/10 for a Corporal.

I wonder if some poor black teenager got drunk/high off drugs and killed four people in a car crash they'd let him off by being stricken by the debilitating condition of poverty?

Joker's point is that building roads etc. IS by definition something done for the good of the country.

Your original statement came across as "well, what's in it for me/what do i get out of it?" deal.

My Mom pegged it right. She cynically said all 7 other men holding Kim's coffin will be joining Kim in it within two years.

Did 2 years even pass?
