S'pore girls say NS is good - just don't ask them to do it
I guess it's kind of like being a by-stander... |

I can't blame them. Consider I am technically a dodger of national service of my birth country myself. I have bias in that regard.

Joking aside, it's kind hypocritical. It's like US Senators saying i support our troops but i won't let my child join the troops.

Doing something 'for the good of the country' is stupid anyway.
The whole purpose of a country's existence is for the good of the people. If you can not see any ultimate benefit past 'it is for the good of the country', then it is not worth doing. |

When you serve in the military (or pay for it), it is 'for the good of the country' but you do reap the benefits which provide you security. There are very few relationships where the benefits go one way (maybe parent to child) but expecting this from a country to person to be a one way street is like expecting to collect money just for existing... That's the way I see it anyway. |

Really, you can't blame the women. It's not like the men wanted to do it either. If enough men volunteered then there wouldn't be any need for compulsory participation to begin with. They aren't saying anything different to what the men would say.

I said you have to be aware of the ultimate benefit, to figure out if it is worth it. 'The good of the country' is not a worthy benefit in itself. Building roads, providing security and so on may be. |

Heck, there is even a robbery victim who completed the naval diver course with a hand and a hook because one got hacked off. So what is the excuse of being weak?
