Thanks so much for the translations, Shinji103! Here are the edited versions:

Spoiler:

Times like this I really hate the Japanese vertical text allignment. Makes it more difficult to fit the text in the bubbles.

If there's a trick to it, I'm too much of an amateur to know it.

Thanks again!

There should be a rule against random bursts of Japanese words in an English fan fic.

Random bursts of english during a japanese fanfic? Heck, the show itself?

Just because the Japanese fail at foreign languages doesn't mean we have to follow suite.

Several points can be raised against such usage.
  • Switching languages like this disrupts the flow of a piece of writing.
  • English readers cannot be expected to know Japanese, so they might not understand.
  • Chances are, the author is not fluent in Japanese and likely to make a fool of himself.
Ever wonder why you don't see this happening in professional writing?

P.S. Now I am myself guilty of derailing the thread.

A nasty problem with Japanese using English being okay, while English spouting Japanese words is actually quite simple.

Japanese is context based. English is subject based.

Spouting off random Japanese words in an English based fiction is like walking up to someone and saying "Bigger Than!"

Bigger than? Bigger than what?

All you have is a description... no context.

Amateurs with no real understanding of what that does in Japanese phrasing are going to make fools of themselves... as a LOT of Japanese words often have multiple meanings depending ON the context. So you can't just start spouting random words off... because the potential is there that while you may mean 'This is a cool thing' with that word, you failed to place the context, and without the context, the meaning falls back on 'You're a gay homosexual rhinosarous! And your dick is small!'

Extreme case, and not an actual example (I'm not fluent enough to have one ready for you), but you get the idea.

... I can't believe you guys are raising an uproar about this over a fanfic with only a single Japanese word in it. What the hell.

I wouldn't call it an uproar, just some friendly debate (though lacking in opposition at the moment). Also, it's not about the fanfic – that just happened to be the catalyst. I was referring to the practice in general.

You mention that a word can have multiple meanings depending on the context, which is true. However, you seem to be ignoring the fact that when Japanese words are used in English fiction they are in context.

Well, I certainly didn't intend to spark this conversation. If asked if I was for or against random japanese words, I'd say I was against. It is a bit jarring running into them, even if i do have a general idea of what the words mean. In the specific case of that fic, I didn't add that in there, my co-writer did. I thought it was fine since it was a random splur of insults. People who speak multiple languages do that sometimes.

There is one other exception though: the use of suffixes. I use them in my other writings. It's just that there are some suffixes with meanings that just don't carry over to the words Ms or Mr. Plus, after watching a show, my mind is used to processing 'Nanoha-san' and 'Fate-chan', so reading/writing them feels more natural.

But, right, image thread... Not sure if I have anything that's not just a repost... Hm, I have some old stuff my friend drew for me:

Spoiler for chibies:
