Ayakashi Triangle manga looks like it will get an anime adaptation, to be announced soon (this weekend likely)

Synopsis

Quote:

Japan may be brimming with mysterious monsters called ayakashi, but they have a special exorcist ninja force to counter the threat! Young exorcist ninja Matsuri spends his days fighting ayakashi to protect his childhood friend Suzu. But when an ayakashi cat named Shirogane shows up, things get turned upside down! Legendary mangaka Kentaro Yabuki returns to Shonen Jump with this new fantasy series full of ayakashi and romance!

FWIW the aggregator scores are strikingly low on this for a WASJ series.

The series initially got shat on for several reasons: To Love-ru fans were extremely pissed off Yabuki was doing this instead of continuing TLR, and the genderbending which pissed yuri haters and lovers alike.

In actuality, it's a very fun manga with an endearing MC and the best WSJ heroine of all time, as well as some great romance and fanservice.

Always go in with an open mind, I'll give it a chance. TBH I hadn't even realized it was the ToLoveRu artist - or that Yabuki actually wrote too...

To give you a pretty good idea what it's like: think Ranma 1/2 meets Inuyasha (70/30 ratio I guess). But with the romance actually progressing.

I must say this whole forced genderswap trope is pretty unappealing and already quite tired, but like I said I'll give it a shot.

Tired trope? I personally haven't seen many series with such a trope. At least not a series like this one where it's actually an important plot point and not just meant for comedy.

That said, I don't think you're going to like this series to be honest.

Holy crap, this is a shock. This series so consistently ranks in the bottom of Jump every week, I thought it was more likely to be cancelled than to receive an adaptation. I honestly thought Mashle would be one of the first of the more recent series to be adapted.

The Tankobon sales are good, it's probably just that the Jump readers doesn't care about this stuff anymore.

Ecchi series have historically always been low in the rankings. It just further proves that rankings don't matter much. If the series sales, it'll last. Granted, sales aren't exactly stellar either for a Jump series, but Jump has had at least one romcom ecchi series running for a long time now, and Ayakashi Triangle fills that spot nicely.

Regardless, I'm also surprised it's getting an anime this soon, and ahead of other stuff like Undead Unluck (or was that canceled?) or Mashle.

The thing is, ecchi became a niche, must have in Jump.

To keep up variety, they are usually safe from the axe even if they consistently rank around or in the bottom. Ghost Tits is a good example. It peaked early in sales, even before the anime around Volume 5-6. The anime didn't really boost the sales, in fact, it started decreasing noticeably even before halfway, so it certainly wasn't something that proved it deserved 24 volumes. Also, it ranked around or in the bottom. But it was ecchi, so they allowed it to exist for longer.

Ayakashi doesn't sell spectacularly, but considering how most of the newbies are commercial failures, selling around 50k+ per volume is good for current Jump standards. It still outsells like half or more than half of the magazine.

Although I also expected Mashle to get an anime first. But if it somehow goes to the Mob Psycho 100 team, I won't be mad.

Undead Unluck is still going, although it seems like it'll reach its conclusion within the next year. Ayakashi being adapted over Undead is a win in my book, but my guess is that studios are just waiting until Undead either ends or has a definitive end date.

Mashle being adapted by the Mob team would be fantastic.
