Cannonball Fast is underway!



“GO!”

That was the only word they needed to hear. The hums, thrums and purrs of engines quickly turned to deafening roars. The starting line once filled now left only with the gusts of afterburners and slightly singed earth.

The racers were neck and neck. Huang Ling Yin's heavy Shenlong leading the pack by a small margin on some odd chance. Right behind was Cecilia Alcott in her Strike Gunner packet Blue Tears. The ones behind her were Charlotte, Laura, Houki and Ichika with Laura somehow keeping a noselength lead over them. It was cathartic, the speed so overwhelming that if the IS' didn't have shields, all of them would be suffering friction burn from the wind. Subsonic or no, the speeds were just too breakneck. Not only that, each racer was trying their best to outmaneuver the rest without moving too far away. Ichika, who was the most inexperienced in IS, losing out to even Houki, learned the hard way why everyone didn't dare to move too far away.

To put it simply, he couldn't break away. He had supreme confidence he could make a clean break from the pack if only he had the space but the others were really sticking it to him. No matter if he nudged left or nudged right, he would touch elbows with either Houki or Charlotte. It was nightmarish in a claustrophobic way. Add that to the highspeed induced adrenaline and Ichika found himself thinking pretty irrationally.

“A chance. Just one. That's all I need!”

BANG!

The ground just beside Houki exploded right as she passed. It dealt no damage and shrapnel was negligible to her shield, but the blast nearly threw her off balance. Judging from the angle of the explosion, the shot came from the front.

“Haha! How do you like that? My Shenlong impact engine pulse!”

Ichika stared hard at the violet unit before him. The HUD of his own Infinite Stratos, Byakushiki already preoccupied with feeding precision data on his surroundings that his eyes couldn't quite follow was quick to scan the current bulky Shenlong.

“So that's why it's so fast.”, Ichika barely breathed out. The past weeks, Rin had been busy working on her IS in preparation for Cannonball Fast, as per the Chinese government's instructions. But when he or any of the other girls asked about it, she just said that it was a secret. She trained on her own and compulsary class practices were done with her usual settings. Even before the race, she made sure to keep her IS secret. Now though, it was all out in the open.

The current Shenlong was set with eight impact cannons, Twice the number of even the Avalanche packet used during the Gospel incident. The bulk was shocking at first sight and it would make anyone wonder if it was race worthy at all. But closer analysis would prover naysayers wrong. That thing was made to blast through the competition, whether by speed or just plain brute force. The great mass could be used to build momentum and anchor the unit during tight turns. Rounded armor ensured that impact would be elastic resulting in minimal momentum loss in case of collisions. What's more the eight impact cannons which were initially considered a liability in this competition where you can't directly attack your opponent suddenly became a strength. The principle of the impact cannon was to compress bullet of air and fire them at the opponent. But now, that compression was focused as a stream, and that stream of compressed air made for some very powerful boosters, all eight of them. About for of them had swivel joints meaning they could face other directions for instantaneous direction shifts. The greatest advantage to them was that they had not lost their capacity as weapons at all if that potshot at Houki was any indication.

uh some things I really want feedback on.

Top part is me trying to use those lines you see at the start of manga chapters to get the reader hyped. Tell me if it's creepy I really fell in love with that and consider it a way to give myself some inspiration and hype to write the chapter as much as a way to stimulate the reader's literary appetite

Also I plan to make custom packets for the girls in this race. Check out Lingyin's and show me what you got.

The denser the protagonist, the more attracted girls are to him and unable to let him away. Notice how the least dense protagonist often end with one girl most of the time.(bar exceptions)

Not much about the opening lines, though something has been orbiting in my mind...

Original packets, not ones that would improve one's speed in a race... at least not written into words yet. I only made an original package that is the "Aegis Package", which is an Equalizer Package meant for the Academy's security team as they are (in Athena at least) using Raphael Revive Basics.

Born in Sweden, Kirin is the second and youngest child of the Albrecht family. As she has no male siblings, Kirin was brought up under a rather feminine household such that hardly does she ever gets punished for most mistakes.

Prior to her transfer to the Academy, she lives in the shadow of her sister Talia Albrecht, whom at that moment holds the title as Sweden's Representative and pilots the IS Fantom Falken. Like Talia, Kirin has a very calm demeanour though she's extremely shy to face any males aside from her father.

Even when Kirin goes out, she would refuse to talk to anyone but her parents, leading to everyone she met thinking she was a shut-in. She often spends her free time with her sister Talia who slowly teaches her about the IS and how they work. She would also meet Aries Leonide, whom would be her childhood friend despite being 4 years her senior.

When Kirin goes to school, she remains as a low-profile student which contrasts her against her sister whom was more friendly and outgoing. Prior to her sister's involvement in the 2nd Mondo Grosso, the two sisters would discover and oddity with the Fantom Falken; both of them could use the IS.

Aries would know of this but would promise Kirin that she would keep it a secret so as to not disrupt Talia during Mondo Grosso.

It was only after Talia falls out of Mondo Grosso as a finalist, that the oddity was brought up to the unit's developers, whom themselves could not determine any discernible reason that a Personal unit would accept either of two pilots without the need for a frame reset.

Kirin would then be bestowed with the Fantom Falken when her sister made plans to retire from her position as Candidate. However, seeing as it would be unfair for other potential Cadets, Kirin would opt to undergo the same series to test to determine whether she's worthy for the Falken.

With plenty of knowledge on the IS imparted from her sister, Kirin would ace all of the tests including IS combat with a notch above her fellow Cadets, leaving her with one last phase before she gets the Candidate title, and that is to complete her studies at the Infinite Stratos Academy along with the Falken.

However, prior to her transfer, she would fall victim to a group of boys whom sees her as someone whom has tarnished their sisters' dream to become “Sweden's Griffin”, a national title bestowed upon the one whom pilots the Fantom Falken.

Without any prior knowledge of socialising with the opposite gender aside from her father coupled with her being known as a “shut-in” due to her shyness, she would not be able to diffuse the situation which leads to her being bullied mentally and physically.

Not willing to be seen as weak, Kirin keeps it to herself but Aries, having known her the best aside from her own family, would see through her tough front. When Aries goes to study at the Infinite Stratos Academy, the two would only manage to meet each other during long vacations, during which Kirin would be faced with more bullying.

Shortly after her transfer to the Academy, she would realise that Aries is now part of Aegis Team, a group of trained IS Pilots responsible for maintaining the safety of the Academy's student and staff.

As Kirin sees the Academy as a place for her, with most if not everyone being girls and are IS Pilots, she has little trouble making friends there. She would then make new friends onward, meeting people like Lingyin Huang, whom also owns a Personal IS, and Tsurugi Katami, her room-mate whom she knows to have a very special yet intimate reason to study in the Academy.

Yet, like most students of the Academy, she does not know that her time in the Academy wouldn't be as smooth-sailing and that her life is about to be tied alongside people she would not expect to meet...

Aries is a person who holds high regards for human life and has taken part in a number of humanitarian missions prior to her transfer to the Infinite Stratos Academy. She's also trained as an unarmed combatant by her parents whom are law enforcement officers.

Incidentally, being physically trained makes her an exceptional girl amongst most others. Her female friends look up to her as the ideal girl; strong and capable. However, this also makes her seemingly unapproachable to guys, whom would only go as far as being friends with her.

This effect is amplified come the advent of the Infinite Stratos, which tips the world's power balance towards the females. While it does not explicitly reverse the gender-socialising spectrum, it added to her unconscious projection as being unapproachable to males.

Aries would painfully acknowledge this projection when the person she has crush on turns her down, stating that she should be more softer and more lady-like in order to be loved. She would be devastated but her parents would come to her aide. Motivating her to be herself and not let her guard down simply because someone else tells her too.

It would take a while for Aries to adopt that mindset, until she learns that her former crush has the tendency to be abusive to females, making use of their vulnerability. Faced with that reality, she decides to stay true to being strong and capable, secretly hoping that one day she will meet a man who would love her unconditionally.

Aries would make friends with the Albrecht sisters, particularly Kirin whom is the youngest of the two. The two see the Infinite Stratos as a symbol of strength, though Kirin's interest in the IS stems from her desire to be like her sister, Talia. Aries' interest in the IS lie mainly it its projection as strength and capability.

Despite the differences in views, both Aries and Kirin would often spend time with one another talking about their own lives and sharing knowledge about the IS.

Aries would then study in the Infinite Stratos Academy, hoping to find strength to be her true, capable self. Eventually she would graduate and her combat performance grants her membership as part of the Academy's six-man security trooper group “Aegis Team”.

Soon after, she would see Kirin transferring into the Academy as well. Renewing her vow to safeguard the lives of the Academy students and staff, especially her childhood friend whom she knows has a special, intimate reason to study in the Academy.

Even though Kirin is a Representative Cadet with a Personal IS, the two remain humble to one another as well as to their own circle of friends.

Aries would soon realise that fate is about to put her life down a path where her strength and ability to protect will be challenged by various threats that the Academy will soon face against...

Not just though. The four OCs (Inami, Tsurugi, Kirin and Aries) first saw each other at the start of the story, during the first Golem attack.

Granted, Inami and Tsurugi recognized each other's voices, Kirin had no idea who he is, Aries was wearing a helmet-type hypervisor and only came by because Kirin was there.
