How did Araragi and Shinobu manage to return to their original timeline and what role did the older Hachikuji play?

Well first of all the reason why they had trouble getting back is that time-traveling or rather timeline-traveling in this case requires a lot of energy. The snake shine is a place where there is a lot of energy so they decided to use it. The problem arise when it turns out in route X the charm Araragi and Kanbaru used was a stronger version where it sucks all the energy around it away. Basically, Araragi and Shinobu had no way of going back. The solution however came when route X's Kissshot decided to let our Shinobu suck all of her energy away so that they can go home.
As for what the older Hachikuji did is she showed Araragi that everything he did had an impact. The theory on time with this series is that everything is pre-determined. Everything that happens will happen no matter what. Shinobu said that if Hachikuji was destined to die then even if Araragi saved her, she will still die in the near future. The twist however of course is the fact that the Hachikuji they saved wasn't the Hachikuji that we knew but rather Hachikuji X. At the same time route X is a world where Hachikuji can survive. The rest is basically a damsel in distress kind of story where Araragi tries to save the world because he wants protect Hachikuji or rather the world she lives in.

With Kiss-Shot X dead, Araragi was able to protect Hachikuji X's world and at the same time, he and Shinobu were able to go back to their own timeline, right?

This volume sounds really fun.

I'm new here, but a fan of this series. Has there been anymore mention of Kiss Shot's 1st "servant" or their relationship? Also, do we find out anything new about Shinobu/Kiss Shot in the later novels besides her age?

He was only briefly mentioned in Kizu and there were certain clues given about their relationship. BTW this is all speculation:

-He killed himself because he couldn't stand being a vampire
-Kissshot probably loved him but he didn't love her back. Reason being Kissshot said that Araragi was the first one to ever help her in any way
-He wanted to turn back into a human but Kissshot was not willing to sacrifice herself for him
-He didn't become a vampire willingly like Araragi did

That looks likely. Kabukimonogatari seems to have introduced a useful plot device for that, although I still don't have read Kabuki yet so I don't know if it could be reintroduced again.

In Kabuki, is it mentioned about how Shinobu has those powers of flight and time travel? Why didn't she use time travel to see the 1st servant then, unless it would drive her mad like Koyomi's death did?

She could fly simply because of her being able to create wings on her back. As for time travel she needs extra energy from special hot spot. All in all it's just abilities that she has.

As for why she don't time travel, it's not really one of those things you just do when you feel it like. Also I don't think she has any attachment to the first servant like she has with Araragi. Besides he died of his own accord unlike Araragi who was kill.

In Kuro there was this one time where Araragi came to Shinobu to feed her his blood and he brought doughnuts to treat Oshino. Shinobu smelling the doughnuts couldn't keep her eyes off the container so he fed her some. The rest was history.

Don't know for sure. The truth is everything that we are told are based on our Shinobu's assumptions. One question that Araragi asked himself was if can Tsukihi even turn Jiangshi.

The first was turned into ash when he stood in stand of the sun. Something that WOULD have been interesting was if they met Blade Hanakawa.

The vampire version of Hanekawa. When Black Hanakawa killed Araragi, Shinobu turned her into a vampire. She was then given the command of turning everyone into Jiangshis. Of course like I said already everything is just Shinobu's assumption and Blade Hanekawa might not even exist.
