Agreed I was really impressed by his acting in this episode.

Overall the latest episode sold me completely on the adaptation. (not a hot take I admit ) Yeah the opening is bad, OST is average but every thing else is really good. I hope it's going to get the full adaptation.

The Megumi arc was 4 episodes in the first anime but I estimate it will be 6 or 7 episodes in the current anime

Instead of "bad", I feel like the OP is more fitting for an anime like Initial D sound-wise . I mean, you can just picture Takumi's AE 86 racing down the Akina mountain with that OP playing in the background

I do like the ED though.

I think the OP on it's own (as a song and the animation) is fine, it just doesn't feel like it fits Rurouni Kenshin.

But it's growing on me.

I've watched well over three hundred anime series, but I've never watched Ruroni Kenshin before in any of its incarnations.

So...did you find the narration helpful?

I remember the Seisohen OVAs simply had Jin-e say "A battojutsu from Battosai. How fitting" Then again, the OVAs took several liberties like the removal of the Oro or how weird are Kenshin's smiles (similar to Allen Walker's fake smiles)

I think it's best to think of those OVAs as fanfiction. They certainly had little to do with the original story either in substance or spirit.

What surprises me about the two sets of OVA in general is that I think there were directed by the same guy from the first tv series and the focus on romance and seriousness was nothing like the first tv series especially early episodes.

The two OVA series had the same director (Furuhashi) but different writers.

Tsuiokuhen (Trust & Betrayal) was great, and it was written by the RK TV show veteran, Masashi Sogo.

Seisouhen (Reflection) was choppy, and it was written by RK newcomer(?) writer, Reiko Yoshida.

So I guess Reiko Yoshida was the main source of the difference between Seisouhen storytelling compared to Tsuiokuhen. It was too bad for Seisouhen coz I like the animation direction for both OVAs by Furuhashi (& DEEN). They did great work.

I guess Yoshida wasn't that experienced back then but I'm also surprised that the remake has a staff member from Taniguchi's Gun X Sword which felt more exaggerated than his previous works.

Well, Tsuiokuhen still mostly stuck to Watsuki's story, even if the tone was darker and more consistently grim and solemn, without the manga's moments of levity and humor. But the story events themselves were still largely faithful to the manga (with a few deviations). So it's no wonder it was great and is still considered one of the best OVAs ever by many.

Seisouhen, however, totally crapped on the manga's story and went for a completely original (and awful) conclusion, so yeah, it was kind of a mess, to the point that Watsuki himself denounced it.

I never knew the two OVAs had different writers, and yeah, that might help explain the difference in storytelling between them. Wish Masashi Shogo had remained as the writer for Seisouhen. It might not have deviated from Watsuki's story and conclusion as much with him (though, of course, there was never any chance of it doing the Jinchuu arc justice with only a couple of episodes).

New keyvisual for the Oniwabanshu arc:

The additional cast includes:

*Ryotaro Okiayu as Hannya
*Hiroyuki Yoshino as Beshimi
*Fukushi Ochiai as Hyottoko
*Tetsu Inada as Shikijō

Okiayu is the only one I know. I think he voiced Gemini Saga/Kanon from Saint Seiya and Zero from Mega Man

He's best known for voicing Byakuya in Bleach and Toriko.

Hiroyuki Yoshino and Tetsu Inada are pretty prolific as well .
