Eden of the East licensed by Funimation

Funimation have announced the license for Eden of the East at Otakon 2009. See ANN for more details.

Feel free to discuss the topic in this thread. And as usual, any discussion about where to download Eden of the East is no longer allowed.

The big question is if it's going to be a sub or dub release. Great catch by FUNimation either way, but why couldn't they have announced this at Anime Expo?

EHHHH?!!!

It's pretty obvious this is going to be a bilingual release. The better question is whether FUNi will be able to use the OP song from Oasis.

Makes me wonder how the dub is gonna handle the language barrier that was portrayed when Akira and Saki were in DC, in episode 1.

This is very expected, but it's certainly welcome news. Next up: Tokyo Magnitude 8.0!

Western artists who allow their work to be used in other mediums generally have rights tied down to just one geographic region. Hence, the rights to the music sometimes have to be negotiated (and paid for) separately from the license to the anime itself. This isn't a problem limited to Western music (e.g. Macross 7 and Zeta Gundam), but it's definitely more common in such cases. R1 licensees have had a very spotty record when it comes to picking up the music as well: Speedgrapher's Duran Duran OP is the closest example I can think of to the Eden of the East OP, and that one didn't show up on the R1 release.

I wonder if this means they've got the forthcoming movies as well?

And I hope there's no licensing mixup over the Oasis song. I've never been a fan of Oasis (second-rate Rutles impersonators), but I can't imagine the opening titles with some other song over them.

What about the movies? Are they going to broadcast it too, or the movies only come out in Funi DVDs? (Unfortunately I can't watch videos through the Funimation website, as Hungary is not supported.)

I can never be too sure in this day and age.

Yeah, I'm curious about that too. Won't seem so awkward and awesome if everyone is speaking English.

Well anyways, I hope they can work something out with OASIS. I don't really want a replacement to "Falling Down".

Vic Mignogna for Akira anyone? Harhar.

Well when they announced that they would be dubbing Eden of the East they did use the opening from the Japanese version, which leads me to believe that they will use Falling Down.

Oh god no
That's what I'm dreading the most. That guy is like....everywhere these days.
I don't mind too much on Johnny ( lol ) Bosch or Crispin Freeman but it would be nice to have a better mix-up.

I'm alittle worried on the OP too but whatever happens, happens.

I was actually thinking of Vic but then I realised his voice wouldn't suit Akira at all. Akira's voice is meant to be smooth and confident wheereas Vic can only voice arrogant cocky types.

Thats probly because they just licensed the tv show and not the movies.

I want Amy Kincaid for Saki!

And Johnny for Akira would be amazing...

I actually didn't care much for Taki's Japanese voice, he sounded like too much of a comic character IMHO, I hope they do a better job with the English.
