The problem with lotus is you do initial lotus first and with that you open one gate.
After the move you will be tired and in pain, cause your muscles worked at 100% instead of maximum 20%

Which leaves a big opening.

And if you managa to survive, recover a bit and able to open even more gates you can do the primairy lotus

And if you ever could do it with 8 Gates, you will be even stronger than the Hokage, but deathness assured o__O

It is an ultimate move, just very destructive and or ultimate sacrifice.
Might be worth it, in some situations, I guess

And yep as said before, you're just screwed if your opponent can block and or survive it

Which is with most ultimate moves that drains you a lot, no?

lotus could be godly... but its still kind of worthless. take this imaginative senario:

Gai: Orochumaru, this is as far as you go
Oro: hahaha...
Gai: I will kill you even if it costs my life! <gives the nice-guy pose and shine on his teeth>
Gai: Opens all 8 gates, and nukes Oro
Oro: ah, ouch, nooo~ dies
Gai: haha~ u are dead now! <coughs out blood, and dies>

At this very moment Oro's corpes transforms into a log. Laughs at gai, and kicks gai's dead corpes. The End.

Ultimatly, the Lotus never beaten anyone b4, and probably never will.

The Lotus like the Hakke and Chidori are moves almost impossible to defend and very powerful they are not to be understimated and in case of connecting will pretty much end the fight, but in case of failure will leave you with a opening or with much less chakra, the Lotus being the worst because you become completely exausted, the reason why they fail is because unfortunately they are performed by secondary characters just for us to see their opponent strength or to advance the story, none of this moves ever connected perfectly and by saying this i mean they never acomplish what the user wanted to do.

Lotus would probably kill gaara or at least put him unsconscious or almost dead if Lee hadn't closed his eys with the damage from kicking him up. Excelent technic, one minor detail that cost the user the fight.

How is this any different from Kakashi telling Oro that he will kill him even if it costs him his life and starting to pump all the chakra he has into a chidori?

lee couldnt win, not ever, not from gaara

even if it would have worked, he would have become shukaku, so thats it for lee

but still, if lee would have thought for a moment, he'd simply kept punching gaara, remember kankurou saying : damn even his sand armor is almost peeled of!
even if it doesnt work, remember the chakra, not even naruto can keep it up the whole time

I think gaara will have a pretty hard time transforming when dead.

well i am not saying chidori is better, but kakashi can do 4 shots a day. He'd probably flee the battle when the 2nd or 3rd chidori fails

but for lotus... once is all you've got

What I got from that scene was that Kakashi planned to put all his chakra into a single chidori. Basically 4 times the power, he planned to finish off Oro but die after, cause he's left chakraless. But this one is totally argueable.

well what i got from that scene was that Kakashi was going to throw is life away for nothing, fortunately Orochimaru scared Kakashi out of his mind so he didn't do anything.
