Well, one of the avenues for spending an extended visit to Japan crashed this week.
The NOVA english-teaching program declared bankruptcy, leaving about 4000 english conversational teachers stranded. Many had not been paid in a month. Now their visas may be in jeopardy though all the details are still being worked out. Several of the embassies are working out discount deals to get teachers back to their native country who want to go... but a lot of teachers are already out of funds because of the payroll issues. The company's crash has been a while in coming but the owner (who is a millionaire) may be on the hook for a lot of angry employees, customers, and a few government agencies before it is done. At the least, this is creating a surplus of english-conversation teachers on the Japanese market and the other schools may pick some of them up... but that leaves new applicants out in the cold for a while. Teaching english in Japan permits you to stay there a year and that can be extended to 3 years without a lot of hassle. The JET program is the best known but there are dozens of schools (many fairly small) as well. Most/all of them require a four-year college degree and most have additional requirements that vary from school to school.

about icf20405's post:
What he's trying to say, is that there's a secret gathering of foreigners that's planning to throw a party in middle of subway on Halloween. This is raising some eyebrows in Japan. They intend to raise some ruckus, make some public nuisance, and have some fun. You know, usual teenage stuff you see overseas... except it's bunch of foreigners (lots of white boys, from the looks of it) planning to do it on a packed train in Japan.

Oh, *that* will go over well.... not.
I've heard about the "trick" .. I suspect it'll either just be stared at or go badly if some officer is having an 'anti-gaijin' mood moment.

I've already done some research and found where they are. What totally killed me was that one of the cafés I found is looking to hire a foreign girl and I fit the requirements perfectly.... except that I don't live in Akihabara!

Well, they went ahead and did it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ljILSaH7CA Foreigners train-jack the Yamanote line and throw a Halloween party. I dunno, it looks like a typical college kids having fun to me. I mean sure, it's public nuisance, but nothing unusual.

I was saving up to go to Japan this summer, but I abandoned the idea when I found out that the US dollar was going down drastically in value. Now it's going to really hard to go. Next to impossible. Unless I was rich of course. But I'm not. Maybe one day I can visit. I've always wanted to see it.

Estimate cost for a one-two week to Japan?
Hello everyone, I was curious as to the ones who were experienced on taking trips to Japan. I plan on going in spring of 2008 with a friend of mine. Neither of us are really fluent in Japanese.
To the ones who went, how much did it cost for your trip in total? I have around $4,000 USD and plan on going on a spending spree when I go. I just wanted to know, about the average cost of a hotel/food/etc and what people spent their money on? Thanks in advance! |

Spring, in general, is an expensive time to visit Japan.
Your cost will vary greatly depending on when you go, where you stay, and how nicely you treat yourself while you're there. With a bit more detail, advice can be given on how to best spend or save money. You can certainly go on what you have saved now. You could go on less. But could you do what you wanted to while you're there? We can't tell you that without knowing what you want to do. |

I was saving up to go in the summer time. I was planning to have around $2,000 at the time. And I was told that wasn't even close to the amount that would be needed. The main thing that screwed my trip over the value of the American dollar continuing to decrease every single day. By spring time it might just be really bad. I was told that I would need around $13,000 dollars for about a two weeks trip to Japan. Especially if I want to go on a spending spree. I also heard that my $2,000 would get me like a hotel room for like a night or two. And that's it. Maybe you'll have better luck.
