XSEED Games is responsible for localising it. Hurray!

Now I just need to hope it will come to PAL land.

Here comes the 2DS

Looks hideous, I don't use 3d but if my 3ds broke I'll still buy an XL over this pos, but it's cheap and people will buy this for Pokemon X/Y.

Now they can't really say "3DS" is a brand like "DS" is, since "2DS" will be the same thing without 3d... or hinges. Why are there no hinges?!

It is one of the most awkward looking devices in recent years.

But there is a possibility that I will wait for the price to drop to nothing and then buy it just in time for post game self trading on Pokemon X/Y.

That is one of the ugliest devices I have ever seen. Whoever designed that should be fired on the spot.

Good thing I'm not a kid anymore, because I'd hate to be the odd one in the group with that giant piece of fail while the other kids have pocket-friendly 3DSs.

With all that real estate, and they still couldn't add a second-stick to it?

And Nintendo, way to be completely out-of-touch.

The fun fact is that due to the new layout of the ABYX buttons, playing Monster Hunter 3G with the virtual pad will be beyond silly. And of course, I can't see how they will make a CPP for the 2DS without bloating it even more.

Really, that's the worst PR move Nintendo has ever done in the recent years. I mean, while releasing a 3DS-less 3DS is good for those who have a limited budget, it is just a glaring implication Nintendo admit themselves that 3D is beyond a gimmick.
I personally rarely use it, so I already considered it as a gimmick. But if the manufacter themselves admit such kind of idiocy, it is really ruining their own image like hell.
Just imaging the day Nintendo announce they will release the WiiU without its gamepad... that's simply the same: making one of the "exclusive features" of the console null and void.

And suffice to say, the fact it is a flat console is the worst offending point: it is unpractical and will lead to various issues for its portability. Heck, forget about soft/bag pouch, you are forced to use a hard one otherwise screens are unlikely to stay unscathed.

Frankly, they should have released a "upgraded DS" console. That would have been less of an issue, marketing wise. And having a dual screen handheld console with hinges is the signature design of the DS line up. But this? I frankly thought it was already April 1st...

So 2DS is 3DS without the 3D?

Shouldn't they just call it a DS? A 3DS without 3D is just a regular DS.

It's hideous as hell but it's clever to sell it with Pokemon. Nintendo's aiming kids with this 2DS : more solid (it's a block!), cheaper, no 3D which parents are afraid of.
It may be unpractical for some games (Kid Icarus lol) but it's perfect for games like Mario games or Pokemon.
However for older people like us, it's a joke.

That thing is horribly ugly. They can say it's for young kids, but does that mean they couldn't put in hinges? Are hinges too complicated for children now?

I guess they don't want to call the 3D a gimmick so they make this horribly ugly 2DS and brand it for kids. This way they can sell a cheaper 3Ds for kids while still making the older audience who doesn't care about 3D buy the full price system. If they make a 2DS that looks good then plenty will say "who cares about 3D" and just buy the cheaper system.

This is designed to be as cheap and tough as possible without considering its aesthetics.

No hinge = cheaper and harder to break, perfect for children.

And I do hope its price will plummet to nothing so that I can buy it just for self trading.

It was obviously designed for Pokemon XY so yea we Pokemon fans are responsible for this abomination.

Hinges are probably one of the easiest parts to break. The DS (original) I owned still works, but the only thing that broke (partially) was the right hinge.

But ah, yes, I see. It is timed to sell along with Pokemon and aimed for children, which does make sense in a way. And it is only sold in certain countries? Europe-only?

I think it's hilarious. I just can't get over it.

It's not like there's no precedent for this kind of thing though... the PSP had the PSP-E1000; the Wii had the Wii Mini... but those never made it to the US. And this is actually messing with the system's central gimmick...
